Butch is Phil...

I'm a big Phil critic, but Butch is much worse. And as others have said, Cutcliffe and DeBord are basically polar opposites.

Fulmer didn't do well against the SEC's elite coaches, but he didn't lose nearly every single big game either.

He recruits very well and will soon put teams out there that just out talent all the opponents...much like Fulmer did during his run as HC (and I think that has been the Bama plan under Satan)...and I expect Butch to stumble into some championships over the next decade...the question is: Is DeBord Butch's Cutcliffe or will he need to find a better OC?

No, DeBord is his Clawson

This thread should be merged with the Dooley thread.

Phil is substantially better than both.
Butch is closer to Dooley than he is Phil.

Lol...welp CBJ has already lost 12 SEC games, only 1 SEC game into his 3rd season...it took CPF 8 full seasons plus the 2-0 '92 season to lose 12 SEC games...

Maybe if you compare CBJ to the worst CPF, the last four years (two of which had top 25 finishes) he lost 15 SEC games and, Jones might tie that this season, a full season early.

I like Butch, let's stop trying to compare long resumes with short ones.

I seriously wonder how long it will take before some people give Fulmer his due. I know most do, but some act like what he did was something any moron could pull off.

Yes, I think the comparison is very valid. Butch is a not-very-bright, conservative tactician and game-day coach, much as Fulmer was. Fulmer was happy to kick field goals and play field-position football while coaches like Spurrier were smart and aggressive and always going for the jugular. With DeBord Jones is more like a latter-day Bo Schembechler (sp). Yea, we ran a trick play in the first half, but when it got to crunch time Butch goes right back in the shell. Going into a shell might be defensible if UT's defense could seal a game--but THEY CAN'T. THE D CHOKES away every opportunity it gets to win a game. Maybe it's time for Jones to get that--you have to be creative and go for scores EVERY TIME you have the ball.

Cut and promoted Chief--the two best things he did. You are only as good as your coordinators. We see how it is with Jones--an OC who play-calls like Bo Schembechler and a DC whose unit can never get the job done in the clutch.

And a QB who throws like Mildred Schembechler.

At this stage I would say butch is a better recruiter but Phil was a better coach at least in games and defiantly had better assistants
