Our SP teams and overall team speeds has been exposed all year in SEC play.

Players who are on our SP teams this year:
Obrien
Propst
Greg King
Toney
Crump
Christian Harris (pretty sure i saw his #)
Tino Thomas
Reeves-Maybin has shows he can get it done
Swafford (has good speed)

Replace those with guys like:
Gaulden
Berry
Berry
Bates
Kelly
McDowell
Moseley
Dews

Much different sp teams and overall team speed going forward

With all due respect, how do you know that?

McNeil was supposed to be very fast for a safety. No one said anything about AJ or Moore being slow when they gave them 4* ratings. IIRC, Coleman was moved to 4* specifically because he was supposed to be fast... he finished 5th in GA 5A 110 m hurdles (that ain't slow).

Brewer was reported to have run a laser timed 4.4 at UT.

You can go down the current roster that so many are calling "slow"... and find guys who weren't considered slow when they signed.

Speed is useless unless it is A) coached up and B) put in a position by the DC to be utilized for success. IMO, this isn't a settled matter with the current roster or the current defensive staff.

Or you could watch the games and see opposing players pulling away for td's against said players. We need speed in pads, not at the track

JMO, but I think this is where we'll see the biggest difference in team #118. In a couple years I expect our special teams to be ELITE. It's clear that Butch puts a priority on special teams and other than having to replace Palardy (admittedly a huge hole to fill) this unit will receive a HUGE upgrade with these recruits and should be a strength as the years go on.

What the heck is O'brien doing on special teams!? You mean our DT O'brien? Hope not or that is just crazy....

Did Jancek dump sjt18's daughter or something?

Or he is stating the obvious that when we recruited them VN loved them for their speed. Blah blah blah but now they sux n cbj players will be so much better.. N faster..blah blah..

Cbj is recruiting nicely but this staff is not scaring the other coaches in the sec... Based on how they have game planned n coaching of current players. IMO

(McNeil) was supposed to be very fast for a safety. He was a battering ram in high school...look at his highlights....speed didn't stick out No one said anything about (AJ) his size and strength were his key attributes per every scouting service..speed was average or (Moore) he wasn't benched at USC because he was fast and could tackle well being slow when they gave them 4* ratings. IIRC, (Coleman no service i read applauded his speed...his size and instincts were applaudedwas moved to 4* specifically because he was supposed to be fast... he finished 5th in GA 5A 110 m hurdles (that ain't slow).

added info for you

we need mickey from Rocky to come in with a few chickens and get the team to chase them around the pen to build up their speed.

If you know your player is going to be out of position, more speed would help to try and track down the ball 40 yards downfield. I agree with a previous poster saying alot of the guys who are "so slow" were fast enough coming out of HS that UT along with ALOT of other schools wanted them. If the kid is in the right spot and taught how to tackle, 4.25 speed should not be needed unless he is poorly coached and always beaten/having to chase from behind. JMO

Look at who i put on the sp teams roster above: (you need LB'ers on sp teams)
Propst, King, Crump, Harris

Look at who Butch is bringing in:
Weatherd, Bryant, Bates, Dews, Mouhon

Outside of Mouhon (battering ram type dude like AJ)

If you cannot see that Butch was immediately trying to upgrade speed on this team I don't know what to tell ya.

and look you need some AJ's, some Mouhons, some McNeils on your roster man
bigger guys who can fight blocks and abuse people

but you cannot field a defense of 9 slow players relative to the competition

It has shown up a lot
Out of position is one thing....getting blown by and pulled away from is another

The speed should improve but what you see on recruiting sites doesnt always translate on the field. As far as special teams, I simply never understood why O'Brien and Wiesman were on punt coverage. I get they're protecting the punter but are they blocking 300 lb guys that we cant put better athletes out there? If Im an opponent, I wouldnt even block those two cause theres no way they will tackle anyone in space. I just dont think you can have 2 300 pounders and a punter chasing punt returners.

WOW... This guy gets it!!!! great post

He was right except for the fact that none of the guys he listed were applauded for their speed

AJ - (size and strength shine per rivals)
Speed Division I Player
Size Blue Chip
Strength Blue Chip
Agility Division I Player
Lateral Pursuit Division I Player

Moore - (speed was his weakness per scout)
STRENGTHS
Coverage Awareness
Hands
Instincts
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Closing Speed

Mcneil - (again size and physicality is applauded per ESPN)
McNeil is a big, physical safety with very good range and production. Grows on you as a total football player the more film you watch. Has great overall size, built like a Bandit or hybrid safety and may end playing a position like that in college

I watched Bama play st's and they are sending possible future top 15 picks down to cover kicks. We are sending walkons and 3rd and 4th stringers.

I believe your stats, but my eye test the last few games tells me that we are just slow and when they get to a runner they are not athletic enough to get him on the ground. They also take bad angles and don't get off blocks. The 2 deep nickel backs are walk ons. Randolph is playing injured because there is no depth behind him. We could go on and on, I guess.

Other teams players wear pads just like we do. So what you're saying is pads only slow our team down?
