Butch is Building Us a Championship Program

Even going 8-4 means THREE (3) of those wins are against total patsy programs. Add Vandy and Kentucky and that means 5 of those wins were against basically bottom feeder, nothing programs.

Is that really a reason to celebrate a 3rd yr head coach? Is that really accomplishing anything worth anything?

Is UT had Vandy's history of being a bottom feeder then maybe this would seem great.

What's happening with UT would NEVER be acceptable to any of the other major programs who are in the top ten of winning all time. Now, those programs have all gone through tough times but it is NEVER as acceptable as it is in Knoxville.

If losing but coming close is so "okay" with everyone then why the heck did Fulmer get canned? A guy who brought a National Championship and .750 winning %, played for UT and was more of aVFL than anyone could ever hope to be... couldn't even get two bad years before he was being pilloried and burned at the stake, yet people do backflips and somersaults to excuse a coach from Cincinnati.

Phil would've gotten a contract extension for 8 wins. Phil had losing seasons two out of his last 4 years. What's your point?

Losing is never okay but don't act like we just got blown out by a mid major.

If you either can't see or won't admit progress, I'm at a loss to even attempt to explain it to you!

Dude, we should have and could have won this game! Just as we should be 6-1 right now. That's the whole point. Your ecstatic about losing close and your perceived indication of progress. I'm pissed because we lost a game we could have and should have won. I'm pretty sure the ultimate measurement of progression is winning.

How many progressive losses is gonna be acceptable? You can't keep losing and see progress. Progress has to equate to winning.

The talent gap has closed, which I give Butch and staff full credit for. Also, this is why you have seen improvement but why you won't see much improvement from this point forward. This coaching staff isn't going to create victories over good teams. If the other teams completely poops the bed, like UGa did or Bama did vs Ole Miss, then we will win some here and there due to talent being equal.

This staff is showing their ceiling. Let's see whose right.

The facts and the trend do not support your opinion.

You have no facts to arrive at the conclusion that this is as good as it will get.

Totally illogical. Play Alabama down to the wire with Freshman on O-Line against their 5 year, 5* starters. Lose 4 games by 17 total points. Lose to 3 top 20 teams CLOSE. So you are saying the talent gap is closing, but we are not there, but don't see when we close that talent gap the close games will translate to wins. Seems we are going head to head with teams with more depth then we are and playing practically even... What happens then when we fill our depth charts with more talent? hmmmmm.

I think people are more upset over these losses since we were in the game and could have won each of them.
...
If we win 9 games will you shut up about how we only beat garbage teams? Do you not see the above is within our reach the way Butch is building this program?

JohnBoy, you're partially right. They're upset because the game was close (== winnable if it weren't for bad coaches).

But they'd also be upset if we were blown out (== bad coaches).

Some of them were upset when we beat Georgia (UGa sucks, shoulda blown them out == bad coaches).

There are a dozen or so folks who just have an agenda, called Fahr Butch, and no result of any type is going to derail them.

There are other folks who are not pursuing that agenda, but they can't see any nuance beyond a W or an L. Performance against expectation means nothing, losing close is just losing, and winning close is just proof that the opponent sucked and beating them was no big accomplishment.

And they insist they're Volunteer fans. It's amazing.

Go Vols!

Yes, we could have won today! Should have? Very debatable. Who the hell is ecstatic? Where do you get that?

The progress will equate to wins, but it is not the overnight transformation that some want to claim it is.

As long as the program is showing progress, Jones will have my support. If the progress stalls before we are competitive on the national level, they will lose my support.

Lol now volnation loves butch again. How fickle. Butch is still the same coach as he was against ok, fl, and ark. He isn't the coach to get us back to sec prominence. Call me negavol all you want, but I've been a fan longer than most of you sunshine pumper shave been alive. the game was only close because Bama isn't Bama from last year and they drop three sure ints from Dobbs.

I guess you haven't been paying attention, guys like JP and myself NEVER STOPPED supporting Butch, and there were many others too! Butch reminds me so much of Majors, and he was able to win a SEC Title.

How is it illogical when it is dependent on future results? Let's see what Butch's record is next year vs UF/UGa/Bama/TAM. Unless he makes major staff changes, we may get 1 of those games. As long as we lose close though...UT is all about moral victories and Jones is the man for the job.

It is very evident that we are putting the talent on the field to win against anybody. We need time to build depth. The "process" is done in a crock pot, not a microwave. Our program didn't get as bad as it was over 2or 3 seasons and it dang sure isn't going to get back in 2 or 3 seasons. But you can just see how good that D is going to be next year. The O is going to need more time. We have a bunch of talent on O everywhere but they haven't solidified into a well oiled machine. Injuries, true freshmen starters, players leaving the team have all hampered the O from matching the D's progress.

Who said anything about overnight transformation? This is three years in the making. What's your threshold? Year 4, 5 when?

What about the rest of the season? How many losses are acceptable within the remaining schedule?

Mark my words. Next year we go undefeated in the SEC. We beat Bama, FL, GA, and USC. Book it.

UT still has alot to play for this season! Wins over UK, SC and Vandy to continune their winning streak over these programs. And most importantly UT can get a win over Mizzou to end the streak and finish 5 and 1 against SECE teams this season.

Im here in Tuscaloosa and I'm proud - there are probably 125 RVs around us - 4 are Vols. Every. Single. RV group we walked by- each one - said we are the best team they've played. Y'all who think the only thing that matters is W-L don't understand. WE ARE COMING. Love this team and our coach. I believe.

The Vols are coming there's no doubt about it! I just wish it were faster, but I am satisfied with the direction of this team. I have been really pleased with the run game this season. Both lines have improved during the season, and the Vols are only a few plays from Championship football. Unfortunately, the injuries have mounted and hurt the Vols especially in the secondary.

I will, however, be right about this.

And you would be right about almost every coach in the nation. I belie he has a chance. I see good progress. And, I have the patience and maturity to understand this was always going to take time.

You just don't get it. I'm not bashing the team. I am replying to the OP stating that Butch is building a championship program. He is not. I don't like Butch. Never have never will. Do you need a hug? Cause I'm not the only poster you've been bashing in this thread. Yes a DT/QB that isn't rolled out is a pocket passer. Bama was blitzing up the gut. So the smart choice with a DT/QB is to roll him out and avoid the rush. Not to sit in a pocket looking down field. Dobbs is a beast when makes things happen on his own and give himself time to make plays.

This, this, this, this, and this. God it's so frustrating.

Really, really proud of Butch and our Volunteers today. They walked into the heart of the Inbred Nation and stood toe to toe for sixty full minutes with a very good Top 10 team. They fought from the opening kick right down to the final seconds, and never quit.

They weren't perfect. Josh shoulda had eyes in the back of his head on a couple of those sacks; the OLine certainly shoulda protected him better at times. Medley is definitely in a sophomore slump, and may need to sit out a game or two to break out of it. Cam uncharacteristically gave up two big pass plays, and Moseley got torched badly once. The OLinemen are still too fidgety with the snap. Did I mention Medley's slump? DeBord and Jancek each had one or two calls I'm sure they'd like a mulligan on, and Butch should've gotten a little more creative than trying for 50-yard FGs with Medley in the funk he's in.

No, none of them were perfect. But they were all awesome, nonetheless. They walked into Bama's house, strode right up to them until their noses were just about touching, and told the crimson elephants to bring it. And then they stood right there with them, answering every challenge, showing just as much skill and guts and strength and smarts as the #8 in the country. They wore Orange like a mantle, and represented it oh so well.

I'm proud of each of these young men, and all their coaches, too. I'm proud of Butch. I can't wait to see how we close out 2015, looking forward to 9-4 after a good bowl win.

We're just about there. So close you can hear it breathing. Butch is building us a championship program.

Go Vols!
You sir....are a true vol fan..well put:rock:

First - it is games like this one and the other 2 or 3 single digit losses that makes a man, a team, and a fan base hungry

Second - it is close wins against ranked teams that makes a man, a team, and a fan base hungry

Butch has this team, this fan base, and this program H_U_N_G_R_Y to win again

Do not be surprised if we sign nothing but O Linemen this recruiting cycle...we are SO close !!!

So we'll be the new UGA of the conference? So close and ao hungry for years to come. I'm not looking forward to that.

Progress is good. But this staff has lost my confidence that they can consistently beat better teams. Play calling at the end of the half and up the middle third quarter was criminal.
