Butch has the potential to put about 8 coaches on the hot seat this year

This year while Florida's struggling to win 6 games and their fans will be home in their jorts crying in front of their TV while McElwain sunbathes on the beach with his Paris Hilton sunglasses on.

McElwain looks like the guy that you see coming and you hide because you know he wants to sell you some more life insurance.

The problem Vandy has is that it's not a destination job. If you can have some sort of success there you're off to greener pastures. Keeping a guy there (who is successful) for 10 years would be very difficult...even with a ton of cash.

Yeah, I think that's right. And Alex is right, too...it is what's needed, is some continuity.

So how to square the circle? Only chance, I think, is to find a Vandy grad who can coach at an elite level, who loves his U, and wants to make a lifetime out of coaching there. In spite of making less than he could elsewhere.

Find that rare bird, and you square the circle. Otherwise, Vandy will continue to be a testing grounds and potential stepping stone to better jobs.

I don't mind if they stay in that purgatory forever, btw. Though it would help if they'd win some games against SEC-W teams to help return balance to the conference :) Go Vols!

thread should have been titled...........

Butch Jones losing to these teams again or the majority of these teams again will likely have him on the hotseat

not really...

hehe.

I don't think there are a lot of true hot seats in 2015 in the SEC.

Spurrier's hot seat is entirely of his own making. No one will force him to retire but himself. Having said that, there's a real chance he will take himself out of the game if he loses to the Vols yet again, and has a mediocre or worse year to boot.

Richt is safe. Saban is safe. Pinkel is hella safe. McElwain is new, therefore safe. Mark Stoops is safe. Bob Stoops is safe.

Mason, maybe a little bit. The fall has been drastic. But the whipping boy coefficient is back to normal (extremely high) levels. So moderate danger of hot seat in 2016 if 2015 goes as poorly as 2014 did.

Bielema can't have another 2-6 SEC season. If he can get to 4-4, he's pretty safe.

So I'd put maybes around three (Spurrier, self-inflicted, plus Mason and Bielema if really bad). That's about it.

As for Butch, he's safe barring 6-6 or worse. His bank account of goodwill is overflowing. As long as there's even a modicum of on-field progress, he gets the mulligan.

[Here's an absolute worst-case scenario I see where we lose to more than half the teams listed, the Vols end up 7-5 and Butch's job remains entirely secure: Lose to Bama, Oklahoma, Georgia, Arky, and USCe ... beat Mizzou (not on the list), Florida, Kentucky, Vandy, and the 3 Power 5 opponents. Again, this is the worst possible outcome I can envisage where Butch's seat remains cool...because he would have "made progress" by one regular season game, and ended the streaks against Mizzou and Gators...and that'd be enough, i think]

Yes really! Butch isn't going into the season on the hot seat, of course! But if he loses to the following he will be. Rest assured.......

Oklahoma
Florida
UGA
Arkansas
Alabama
South Carolina

If he loses to all of the above that means he is 6-6 and it will be overwhelmingly viewed as completely unacceptable at this point.

He has to beat at least two of the above mentioned.

Of course, I'm assuming he wins the other six games and isn't horrifically upset by one of the ones or more I didn't mention.

This is certainly a turning point kind of season for Butch. I'm not suggesting he will be fired after the season. But, if it's a 6-6 or even 7-5 season heads will be spinning and his ass will surely warm up..........

I think his minimum regular season win column is at 7 wins. Regular season. A 6 win season and a bowl win in a ****ty bowl would give him 7 total. That's unacceptable at this point..............

Well, I definitely agree that 6-6 again is not good for him. And a 7-5 that includes losses to Florida, Bama, Georgia, and Mizzou (basically, all the streaks being extended another year) would not be good.

But I added a postscript to my previous post that shows one 7-5 season that I think would be seen in an at least mildly positive light by the majority of Vol Nation. What do you think of it?

I think he needs 7 regular season minimum and I think the bowl game is a must win too. That gets him to 8 and that is progress. Provided he beats the 6 we hope and think he will/should and wins at a minimum one of the toss up games.

Ideally he wins the 6 he should and wins at least 2 of the other 6. That gets him to 8 regular season and I think that would be remarkable provided the still thin and youthful roster. That being said, the roster is in a much healthier state..............

Well, I think we'll win 8 or 9 this year. On my most optimistic days, I creep up as high as 10. I was just pointing out a scenario where we could go 7-5, with a few key wins among the 7, and Butch still be very secure in his seat. Cheers!

Not saying anyone will get fired for losing to Jones. Big difference between hotseat and fired. But Tennessee is in a unique position to make a lot of coaches and fanbases uncomfortable this season, and much of it is due to our recent suckage and the lack of respect for the program in general.

Everyone outside of Kentucky and Vandy fans expects to beat Tennessee this year and for the foreseeable future.

No

If Butch has the potential to put 8 coaches on the hot seat, what's the potential that those same 8 coaches, put Butch on the hot seat?

Yet another stupid thread. We all like Butch but neither he nor UT has won anything yet in the SEC, so stop with all the nonsense about putting other coaches on the hot seat. It's stupid.

Most off season threads need to be allowed some latitude. Granted, this one requires more than most.....but it's still the offseason. Cut OP some slack, would ya?
