Butch gets raise and extension

Not trying to flame, please don't read this post in that manner, but what ultimatum could he have given him? "Give me more money or I quit and forfeit my salary and potential buyout money?" Unless he had another offer, which he didn't, he was in no place to give an ultimatum.

Hart and Jones just did the dance that most all ADs and HCs do at this time of year when the program is going in the right direction.....the HC gets his name out there for potential jobs he may or may not have interest in and the AD opens the checkbook for the coach and staff in an effort to retain them. IMHO, the timing is consistent with when this typically happens.

True, unless you're Mike Hamilton. Apparently his Business Management professor taught that a healthy bottom line comes from firing your coach 10 months after giving him a raise and extension.

Illogical only from a fan's perspective imo. Economically it makes plenty of sense. No matter what Pinkel does or accomplishes at Missouri, he's never gonna be able to have the financial impact and ability to generate revenue that Butch has at Tennessee, which more than justifies his salary. Just look at the increased ticket sales alone this year. Conservative estimates put that number $4 million or so. Just is what it is.

Correct. Tennessee (in 2013) made $40m more than Missouri in AD revenue

So he's making more than Gary Pinkel who has won the SEC east 2 years in a row?

Hummmm........

I'm not saying keeping Butch is bad and I understand the need for stability and "recruiting pitch" to future players....but from a "performance and pay" perspective, it sounds very illogical.

Oh well, I hope those on VN will understand any criticism (perhaps severe) next season (especially for assistant coaches) if under-performance becomes reality.

Mizzou is getting a great deal for Pinkel, but that doesn't mean someone else (Michigan maybe) wasn't ready to throw $3.5 million at Jones. Got to keep up with the deep pocket universities even if it means overpaying relative to his contemporaries if Hart believes Butch is the right man for the job. I believe HE feels Butch is that man. He didn't believe Cuonzo Martin was worth a raise and extension after a Sweet 16 run, and let him walk. So we know he isn't scared to call a coach's bluff if he doesn't necessarily believe he's worth it.

I don't think Michigan has historically been a deep pocket university in the sense that they have paid their coaches top tier. I think they would be hard pressed to do that now with how bad their state's economy has been for the last several years.

Looks like about a 20% raise and a two-year contract extension. That's quite significant (especially considering going 6-6 with no guarantee of ending with a winning season).

I'm a Butch Jones fan, and I think he's done a good job at UT (including a fantastic job recruiting), but I hope he ends up being a GREAT coach. Dave Hart is paying Butch as though he's certain he'll be a great coach at UT. I sure hope he's right!

Go Vols!!!

PS We REALLY need to win this bowl!

I bet hostage negotiations 101 is a pre-requisite for becoming an agent for a D1 coach these days.

They are a state flagship university with a deep booster pool, which was my point. I didn't have to use Michigan either. Just any school looking for a coach. I used Michigan because of Butch's natural ties there.

Specifically speaking about UM though, they just paid Brady Hoke $3 million to walk away, and if they aren't planning on spending at least that annually for his replacement, then they should have just kept him. $3 mil got Tennessee a C-USA HC two years ago, so I doubt less money is going to net UM more.

They better approach this hire like an investment. See Tennessee in Dec. 2008 for reasons why.

It wouldn't have made any sense for Butch to walk away from this for less than $4.5 to 5.0 million. (Higher cost of living. More taxes. Knoxville more attractive. Buyout.) Just don't see Michigan paying that.

$3.6M, 2-year extension, increased pool of assistant money.

Assistant money was the most important part of that deal, IMO. Retaining stability for the first time in years is so crucial.

Hart's officially gone all the way in on Jones, so let's hope it works out. Go Vols.

Ummmmmmmmm, weird

I'm glad we locked buTch in.

What's most important is the extra $$$ for his other coaches so I hope that was a BIG number too.

We do NOT need to lose our best recruiters for any reasons!!!

Recruiting top kids is what will get us back on top.

P.S.-I was really glad to see Colorado State stick to their guns over the McElwain buyout.

Did they get the full 7.5 mil? Or did they do the 3 mil and a game played in Ft Collins.

"In addition to the $5 million in cash, Colorado State will be paid $2 million to play a football game at the University of Florida as part of the agreement. "

Hart is paying Butch average money for SEC coaches. It's the going rate for a coach in this league.

We just raised and extended someone who will have the exact same record as Derek Dooley through 2 years at UT if we lose this bowl game.

But I think if you look at the program Butch inherited compared to what Fooley got you will see the reason. Also I think recruiting might be on the up swing... Just maybe...
