Butch Davis Question

A number of callers to local talk radio shows have stated that they don't think UT should get involved with any coaches who have an "NCAA violation" record. I agree with that judgment.

This comment came up, however, in the context of talking about Butch Davis. I know that he inherited a really bad situation at Miami when he replaced Dennis Erickson as head coach. As I recall, the U's problems were not of his making and he also did very well despite the NCAA penalties that arose while he was there.

Other than that situation, does he really have a negative NCAA compliance history?

That was my conclusion as well, but I just couldn't recall his career well enough to be confident. I don't know if he's a viable future candidate at UT or not, but he sure shouldn't be improperly associated with the problems his predeceasor left for him at Miami. From what I recall, he was the clean-up guy, not the bad guy.

I tried to get through on the Animal today to correct Jacoby and Dearstone. Those idiots tried to say Davis got Miami in trouble.

Check out wikipedia, and enter Butch Davis. Like the above, Butch inherited probation at UM, and despite losing 32 scholarships, he still rebuilt the program. When he left, UM went to crap again as far as discipline. Look at all Miami football alumni the last 15 years. The ones who have a bad name didn't play under HC butch. The ones that are stars in the NFL that didn't get in trouble, did play under Butch.

Do you seriously think UNC would jeopardize their academic reputation by hiring a reckless football coach at a basketball school?

It's amazing that people so uninformed about their supposed area of "expertise" can get hours of air time in a large radio market.

The only time I remember Miami winning big without breaking rules and without looking like a bunch of clowns was when Butch Davis was there.
