Butch Davis (North Carolina)

Do you want Butch Davis to be the next head coach?

Yes, a QB would change a lot for this program but it looks like entire program has issues. The new coach is going to have a major rebuilding project all around the program.

A new coach will solve a good portion of the problems outright. Fulmer has been a poison to this program.

IMO we have a few cornerstone we can build around even on offense.

We aren't as far away as it seems.

If we can duplicate what UF did with Zook I'll be very happy.

What losing to Ole Miss and Miss St?? :eek:hmy: They were horrible under Zook and bearly got by several games...Sorry, I set my sites a bit higher than that.

I don't disagree. But it's going to be a tough process and I don't discount losing a few people along the way. The right hire will be able to offset this, which is why its so important that Hamilton keep focused on weighing his options properly.

Maybe Davis knows that this program is going to take a complete reconstruction from the ground up and doesn't want to go through that process.

He's got a pretty good program coming together over in NC. I don't see how he steps away from that and the potential that it holds to a complete basket case, shipwreck that we have here in Knoxville.

(not saying that it isn't a better job - it is - but its going to take a lot of work to get us back where we should be. That's a tall order for any new coach.)

Do you really think UNC had better players when Davis stepped in 2 years ago? We may be bad, but not that bad.

On his radio show earlier today, John "Fuzzy Bear" Pennington mentioned something about what he thought was an almost overwhelming amount of support for Butch Davis as our next head coach, approximating it to be somewhere around, "90%" of those he talks to.

I have a difficult time believing this, quite frankly.

I wonder if Butch Davis really has that kind of support with each of you, or if he is being pushed onto us by the media?

So, the question is:

Do you support Butch Davis as the next coach, believing that he is the best available / attainable candidate, or would you most prefer someone else?

I would like to see Davis at the HFC

But, I think there are better canidates out there. His age doesnt really bother me because, correct me if I am wrong. Isn't Saban 57 as well?

I want Gruden or Leach, in that order - and no others UNLESS and UNTIL these two have refused a contract for $5M / 5 years, and have been serenaded by the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. Twice.

You are obligated to call Gruden, and how you could see what Leach is doing in Lubbock - with that talent, and making it look as effortless as it appears - is absolutely beyond me.

I find myself more interested in Brian Kelly than Butch Davis. Davis is a journeyman and has had too many job changes for me to really be confident he would stay in Knoxville. Brian Key would be a Pearl-esque hire that could make UT not only relevant but interesting.

I want him but I can think of a few candidates that would be better...he is more realistic though.

1.) Gruden (but hightly unlikely)
2.) Davis (great track record and Jerry Punch thinks he will move to one more high profile school after UNC=UT)
3.) Mike Leach (He will definitely get our offense on track
4.) Kelly-has done a great job at Cincinnati
5.) Muschamp-(with Trooper Taylor as offensive coordinator) 2 young coaches with great talent and enthusiasm along with discipline!

With Gruden saying no thank you, our choices are getting slimmer to get the home run choice. We may have to accept years of rebuilding with a up and comer type.

1. Cowher
2. Gruden
3. Davis
4. Leach w/ Chavis remaining on defense

anyone else and it will be a bad firing on Hamilton's part

Do you want to know if he is the top choice or if he is an acceptable choice (as the original comments seem to indicate)?

I agree. I would not be surprised if 90% of those polled were in support of Davis even though he might not be their #1 choice.

If Mike Hamilton offers Mike Leach anything approaching $5 million dollars a year, he should be immediately terminated and committed to the nearest mental health facility.
