We need to chill out on the 'ESPN hates us,' 'we aint as dum as you thinks we is' inferiority complex stuff.
We just canned a hall of fame coach who has dedicated his life to our university and embodies UT, if not SEC football. This is perceived as a short-sighted decision. We had our reasons, but 95% of college football programs would never have considered such a change. It is rational to question the logic behind this decision. It is poignant to examine the reprecussions of such a move. This decision was the big push that will get this year's coaching carousel spinning. It's big news. Embrace it.
We do embrace it. I agree with your last paragraph where you state that most colleges would never fire a coach with his winning record. I submit to you, however, that Tennessee isn't like most colleges.
As the statistics show...Tennessee is the 8th winningest program in college football history behind the only other SEC team Alabama at 7th.
That ( in my mind ) makes UT an elite program worthy of an elite coach.
I'm sorry to see so many UT fans that don't seem to agree with that assessment yet do agree with ESPN that this job is somehow not as good as LSU, Georgia, Florida, or Alabama.
I don't for a second think that there is any conspiracy at ESPN.
Chris Low, however, who happens to work at ESPN and was a Tennessee beat writer ( if I'm not mistaken ) has said that the jobs at Georgia, LSU, Florida, and Alabama are all BETTER jobs and I say they're not. I would say that the Alabama is an equal job but I would not say it is better. To say Georgia and LSU are better jobs is a joke to me.
Low and others like him continue to harp on our dismal recruiting base as the foundation for their position yet, again, Tennessee is the 8th winningest team in college football history so has this recruiting problem hurt us until now?
No, it has not. So I don't think we need to "chill out" but, rather, state our case as to why any coach in the nation would want to come to this university to coach football.
Proudly slipping on my orange tinted glasses.
