Butch & Dabo: Butch Can Win a Championship, but He Needs Changes

This offense IS working in the SEC, and the ACC and all over the country. It is hardly unique. It's just that this Tennessee team can't run it.

You can blame that on the coaches, the players or both, but it's not the scheme itself. We just really suck at it.

I think one can make the argument that the version of the spread offense that Butch is trying to run at UT, is not being run all over the country.

This is pretty much what I've been thinking since we hired Debord. Just a placeholder for a very promising young OC. He must go this off-season, if not then Butch will be losing my support. I believe in Butch Jones. I think he's just too loyal, and not pragmatic in some situations.

You mean the version where the oline gets blown off the ball on every play, and the QB misses receivers by a mile more than half the time?

Yes, you are correct. There aren't a lot of teams running that version.

Butch isn't our guy, he was never the guy. He was just the best choice at the time and Tennessee didn't want to go to prom solo.

Disagree. If more knee about football they sound would have seen the hire as a great one. The best Texas, btw they have unlimited funds, could do was to hire Charlie Strong. The best UGA could do was hiring Kirby Smart. The real world of college football just doesn't work like some in here say.

well...true that Dobbs scrambling saved UT's bacon more than once last year. Also true that his inability to stretch the field vertically put our VOLS in a position to lose...which has been the case this year.

As far as scheme....this is the scheme that 80+% of the rest of CFB teams run...at least part of the time. Major difference...most have a QB that can throw the ball....could be other players as well, but execution and effort is there for many teams. Playcalling could be better as well, but it starts w/ whatever faith they have in the QB. Other teams are clued in and do not respect the downfield game. Until they do, it will be more of the same; loading the box and taking away short passing routes.

Scheme is fine...we may not have the right players to execute. I don't see how an explosive offense from a year ago has become this bad without losing that much from a player perspective.

Scheme is fine but not the right players after four years of recruiting? This is what gets many coaches fired in college the NFL. Good coaches can adjust scheme.

This all day long. I seem to remember hearing commentators sometime in the last couple games talking about how our hurry-up really isn't one, and how we're using play clock more often than not. I want to start there.

We pretty consistently lose the time of possession battle, regardless of how often we're snapping it or how many plays we're running. We've had more of the ball against Florida and A&M, and less of it against everyone else - to the tune now of our opponents have had the ball about a half hour more than we have, over eight games. I want an offense with some elements of ball control. Put really overly simply, just as much as I want yards and points I want our defense to be less tired and their defense to be more tired.

The possibility of that happening begins and ends with the line. Now, last year, we ran for about a hojillion yards behind good run blocking. Call it a hunch, but I'm thinking maybe that happened behind guys who had nailed down their fundamentals while Harry Hiestand was still here. With Notre Dame having the season they're having, I would be getting right in Hiestand's ear mentioning the likelihood that Brian Kelly is going to be job hunting soon and wouldn't he like to come coach some big monster SEC linemen again.

As far as a coordinator? Why not Tee Martin? There's some poetic symmetry there. They poach Kiffin, we poach Martin. USC's offense has looked pretty impressive while he's been there. Martin is one of the best recruiters in the country. And I just have this feeling like you get David Blackburn in there at AD, tell the boosters that the road to titles starts with a couple million more to put in the *real* best coaching staff in America, and you go tell Martin that momma's calling. And like Bear Bryant said once, "When Momma calls, you just have to come runnin'."

Anyway, just a couple random thoughts. What does anyone else think is the answer? Because it sure does seem like we have some big question marks hanging around out there.

Butch is garbage on Saturday. That has always been the case. Butch has a garbage offense. Butch is not the guy. He'll be gone soon enough.

I am still stuck on the UGA 2013 game that he gave away with game coaching. He has been learning on the job ever since. He is an excellent program builder and recruiter but that only goes so far. Someone has to develop talent and give them an opportunity to win on Saturdays. That is his weakness.

???

You're still stuck on a game where we were significant underdogs, but would've pulled off a big upset win if not for a fluke fumble in the end zone by Pig Howard?

If I were looking for games to criticize the coaching, that one would be near the bottom of the list over the past four years.
