Butch better win at Florida

completely disagree. Butch is our guy. I think we underestimated Ok, and overestimated our young team and didnt scheme enough after Okl made the requisite changes to finish them off. We will get better as the seasom progresses.

Even Butch said this team is one strong class away from big time championships. But first Florida.

His original plan was great! We built a lead and out D was playing nasty! Then it happened...one coach made adjustments and the other failed to move the ball from that point forward. Made NO adjustments to even try to score. Any score and we win...or even just slow down and run the clock more.
What good does it do to go fast if you are not moving the ball. Unless he makes a change. He is not our guy!

I've reading posts on here since last night and I just can't understand how many "fans" are ready to write Butch off. We all knew this year was still a work in progress, but the media made it seem like we were gonna come out there and beat everyone. The hype gave us false hope. I think that game showed we still have young guys and lack depth at key positions. I will say I think our offense looked vanilla at times and had some head scratching play calls, but our receivers just can't seem to get open for anything. We have possibly the best receivers in the SEC talent wise, but if they can't work their defender to get open; every team will have the recipe to beat us. Load the box and send in 3 or 4 guys to challenge us to throw. Dobbs had guys in his face left and right and just couldn't get any help from the line or receivers. I don't like to blame refs either, but that PI late in the 4th was bs because that ball was clearly uncatchable. Let's all just take a step back and wait for Florida to see what our season is going to look like. If we don't beat Florida then I think something needs to be done; whether it be staff wise or personnel.

Idiot for stating the fact that our current coach is no further along than than the previous piece of crap that intentionally ran our program into the ground? Butch isn't Dooley by any means, but I'm starting to think the only difference between the two is that, and I've already stated it, Dooley quit and intentionally gave up and didn't care what happened to our program. Butch cares and has worked hard to get some things going, but just sucks as a football coach. Great at PR, would make a great politician. Can bring some recruits in, but it doesn't do any good if you can't coach em up.

Dooley cared less, quit on the job, collected his buyout and rode off into the sunset.

Butch has worked hard, has recruited well but is full of shanagigans and excuses, but has the same record so far as Dooley.

Common denominator is both suck at head coaching.

Just stating facts.

The difference is Dooley's players didn't care either. At least this group plays hard for Butch.

We are soooooo much better off with Butch than we were with Dooley. When we win in Gainesville, all will be forgotten.

I def agree with you here. I think the biggest difference between a Dooley coached team and a Butch coached team, is that Butch's teams are just above and beyond better in the actual fundamentals of football. Another difference is that Dooley never could control his players. They had 0 respect for him and the discipline with his teams were non existent. Contrast that with Butch and it's not even close. Butch has total control of this football team in all aspects..

Volunteer nation. Lighten up. We are once again competitive. We will be, in every game this year. Haven't been for more than a minute. God bless the UT program and the good old USA

someone said he has the same record as doofus did since he he has been here i want to start see the wins, and if he does not beat flordia geo or ala soon i say we move on, not saying he has to beat them all but at least one this year and if not for sure one next year. it is all about the wins, that what matters the most. we will have our shots the rest of the season, it is not over but i am like most everyone on here, i am very upset with the way the game played out. we can blame players and coaches but it comes down to wins and that all that matters and we need one over florida, ala, or geo. GO VOLS!

Dooley went 6-7, 5-7 and 4-7. At this point Dooley had played 10 ranked teams and beat 0. The fact that the first two games of Dooley's 3rd year were against second to third tier teams should be noted.

Jones went 5-7, 7-6, and is 1-1. Jones has played 11 ranked teams and beat 1. Dooley also didn't have a winning season, Jones has.

The trends in the two coaches are opposite, as are the trends in their recruiting. I believe that Butch does get a bit doe eyed when facing the big game scenario, but talent is improving, performance is improving (though not as fast as many would like), win totals are improving. At the end of this season, if UT hasn't improved to the 8+ category, we likely have a problem.

Until then, we lost a winnable game to a higher ranked team at home. A game that last year we lost by double digits and were heavy under-dogs to, if memory serves. C'est la vie.

They gave their all. But they are kids. If the coaching keeps sucking then we cannot expect them not to go all american with the mindset.

I'm 30 years old and been a Vol fan since I was 7 or 8 years old. I've supported them, cheered them through good times and bad, but this is getting ridiculous.

I was a little skeptical when UT hired Butch seeing as the prior two coaches weren't worth nothing. I thought the biggest team he's coached was Cincinnati, but this is the SEC. I'm not going to say we're always the "best" conference, but we're d*mn sure the toughest. The SEC conference games are tough & grueling as it is.

I believe we hired another Mark Richt.
Butch can recruit, he's got the slogans and the mottos, but I don't think he can win a big demanding game.

We've lost to Georgia twice which could have been wins. There's no reason UF should have won last year, and now we allow OU to come back and beat us in our house because he's to scared to take a 1 yard chance when momentum is in our favor or he tries to manage the game conservative.

At this point I believe he should stick with building mailboxes cause he hasn't showed he can coach worth a hoot.

Don't forget the vandy game two years ago. We've literally lost almost every game of significance thus far under butch. And surprisingly it could be worse. His only good wins (usce) both required huge last minute miracles to end up winning. But gues what...we were absolutely dominating both games before butch went all "butch mode" (we've all seen it).

I would argue we look way better on the field at this point with Butch than we did with Dooley.

The difference is night and day. But sadly we don't measure in anything other than wins and losses. Now at the end of this season the records are still the same.....

It was as if UT had OU on their heels. Had put them against the ropes. They were stunned. And then we didn't know how to finish the fight. Got to have confidence in your team. once you smack them in the mouth you have to kick them in the balls and we didn't.

Azzani has done less with more than many former assistant coaches I can think of

I originally thought the idea of UF being a must win game was insane. Now I totally agree it is. I am going to go a step farther. Butch needs to at the very least, beat UF, UGA and Mizzou. Forget about Bama. The honeymoon is over for me. Wins are what matters and since Fulmer we have had what 2 wins against ranked teams? Pathetic.

So, lose to OU and every other game, except for Bama, becomes a must-win? You were expecting 10-2 as a worst case scenario?

Just curious but at this point in Dooleys career, how many wins did he have? And how many does Butch have now?

Look, I see some issues that Jones has that concern me. Specifically the Vanderbilt game in 2013, the Florida game in 2014, and the Oklahoma game in 2015 where we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. That does concern me, and should be discussed.

But, to compare the two without looking at trends is just lazy. Did Dooley ever have a winning season? Win a bowl game? Beat a ranked team? Recruit at this high a level? How did Dooley's win totals go from year one to two to three. Compare that to Jones. Compare the point deficits between similar opponents and you will see the improvement of better recruiting and coaching, it just isn't happening as fast as most people like in this McDonald's driven world.

I will say it again, if at the end of this season if we aren't looking at 8+ wins, we might have an issue that needs to be discussed, but losing to a higher ranked team even at home (and yes, I do believe UT should have won that game, but it was a very close call - ask Vegas), in game two of season 3 isn't reason yet to panic or to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
