If it weren't for his recruiting, I could definitely think of 22 coaches I would rather have than Butch. But they aren't necessarily the 22 they have ranked ahead of him on this list.

and if you look at his recruiting this year he is doing a poor job.

He is 21-17 in his 3 years and has not been able to beat Florida or Bama. I like Butch but he is not a proven commodity. Hopefully that will change with a SEC championship this year. If he can't do it this year I don't think he ever will.

Kind of surprised he's in top 25 right now.....

But when you think about the success he's had in just 3 seasons after inheriting a roster that was nearly as depleated from suffering close to the death penalty like depression.

Vitually zero offensive linemen with a key athlete sprinkled here or there and no legitimate depth at ANY and I mean ANY position on the field.

Has built the roster back up to at least reputable now with close to having the depth to content on the national level. (I'm still saying it's not there like everyone else already claiming titles and stuff. But it's close)

The talent on the field and the fact that they "play for Butch" shows against the Oklahoma's, Alabama's, Georgia's, Florida's of the world. Just have to beat them on a somewhat consistent basis. But when you look at the last 2 bowl opponents, Butch and the Vols destroyed the competition. That alone shows the major improvements Butch has made with this program in just 3 seasons.

9 win regular season minimum I'm personally expecting from this bunch. Minimum. Needs to be 10 though.....

You forget what players he HAD to work with verses the players he HAS to work with. Let's not forget what he walked into when he got here. Worse than a mess. Wasn't even an attractive job....meaning the program was in bad shape virtually no one wanted to deal with it....now that's letting you know how bad it was...for a historic top 10 program of all time to not be an attractive job?

Butch accepted the challenge. Let's accept him. For me, his 1st season was a wash. I'm almost willing to say his first 2 seasons should be a wash.....

please name 22. Because most wanted Gus Malzahn and Bilema, and Charlie Strong, and others. So name your 22. Be happy with who we have. Butch has done a superb job.

Until he proves he can win big games and can close out games you can't really argue with it

Maybe a panty wearing fan like you couldn't argue with it, but I could. Having to come in and completely rebuild a PROGRAM + field a team with a bunch of dedicated, but young players and having one of the most difficult schedules in CFB in front of you.........yea I could go on with injuries and off/on the field issues......but I'm sure short sighted goobers like you can't see the forest for the trees. This is the SEC sister, not the Big 10 or PAC 12........the friggen S E C......BIG BOY FOOTBALL, and CBJ has turned this train wreck around with young men that want to play for TENNESSEE.

GO VOLS:rock::rock::rock::rock::rock:

I think Butch is a top 10 coach......until game day. So when you balance that out, 23rd is probably about right.

Haters going to hate, I still believe that people like you are trolls. CBJ has placed UT into winning football, and goof balls like you want to type garbage like this, thinking they are clever or insightful......

Go Vols!!!

Well for now that's prob bout right.

Truth is no A-list coaches wanted this job. It was depleted of talent, had ruined most relationships with high schools in our recruiting footprint, run off alot of past players and supporters, the view outsiders had was the UT national brand had lost a lot of its value.

A coach knew they would have to come in with all the negative weight of these things going against them and they would have to recruit and play against the likes of Saban/Bama, Lsu, Georgia, Florida, etc and take a huge amount of round the clock work and effort and a hit to their win/loss record for at least a couple years while working their fool head off to mend these fences and with competing in the SEC it would be a long road to turn it around so no big name coach would even touch it.

They had to find a B-list coach. Some up and comer that would give it a try. That's what Butch was. He had only proven that he could take a school that's already built and sustain success. Never had to do a total rebuild and never coached at this level so you figure a B list coach most likely would do a B list job.

Only thing is it turned out Butch is an A list marketing coach and turned around the view of UT, he is a A list fence mender and fixed all those relationships with high schools, ex players, donors, etc. Butch proved to be an A list recruiter and has got the most talent this university has seen in a decade. He is an A list coach at getting players to play for him, preparing them for games and game planning. So much that he has actually over achieved his B list status. In fact he has over achieved at everything but gameday coaching where as of this moment he is still a B list in game coach. He's not underperformed, he has over performed at everything but one and has performed to his level at that.

Instead of being furious about that I'm tickled at how he has been far and above better than the no name coach he was when he was hired at everything else he has done and I know he is a smart guy and can learn so I know he stands a pretty good chance at being able to up his shortcomings as a gameday coach.

With the mess UT was in and hiring some under the radar coach to fix it, 9 outa 10 chances for him to be a total failure. We are freaking lucky he has succeeded at all that he has. We haven't won any champ's yet but just to be a top 10 team preseason is miles from where that B list coach took over the program. I think we are blessed to have him.

So, his team is #10, but he's only 23? How exactly does that work?

He re-built the culture. He recruited and developed the talent. It's his product on the field.

I suppose it is better than having the No. 11 coach, yet the team isn't ranked in the top 25. Or, having a top 5 coach and not a top 10 team.

18-23 range seems about right. There's 15 or 16 that are definitely better at this point. Then there's a group of about 10-12 that you could make arguments for. He wins big this year, he'll certainly move up the list.
