LOL. Texas, who returns 12 guys and went 5-7 under a coach who's had two seasons with 8 wins or better, is ranked number 18? While Tennessee, who went 8-5 and returns 14 starters including a top quarterback and a 1000 yard receiver, is "receiving votes"? I had no idea the Arch Manning effect would be that big.

Texas also got a number 1 vote.

We went 7-6. Texas has been relevant far more recently than we have. They won the Sugar Bowl three years ago. It bothers me, but we haven't done jack since 2009, we have a losing record since then, and haven't beaten a Top 10 team in 15 years. No one is going to give us the benefit of the doubt at this point.

Yes, the team has to earn its respect on the field by ending all those things you said.

They're not a powerhouse but they've done something far more recently than we have. Some of y'all keep thinking respect is going to be given to us, we've been down so long, we're going to have to earn it. It is what it is.

Yes because Texas went 10-4 in 2018 they should be ranked above Tennessee. 2018 has nothing to do with 2022.

I seriously think the Vols could beat half the teams that are ranked. Good thing preseason rankings don't mean anything
We always think that in August. So does every CFB team. I think we're going to be pretty good. 8-4/9-3, but we've got to go out and prove it. Considering our track record the last decade and a half, why should anyone respect us? Because we went 4-6 against P5 teams last year? No one not wearing orange colored glasses is real impressed with that. I actually think people have been pretty complimentary of us as a whole this off-season, especially the SEC network, mostly because of our offense. Nationally though we are going to have to beat some people to be taken seriously. That's a bitter pill for those of us who remember how the Power T once commanded respect on it's own, but it doesn't right now.

It hasn’t commanded respect since 2004 really

No, we went 8-5. I saw it on ESPN, it said so.

Besides, this isn't about the lack of long-term results from Tennessee, this is preseason snarking about a team who won 5 games being dropped into the Top 20 while a much more put together Tennessee team with an All-SEC QB candidate is punted to the "Also Receiving Votes" category. That's pretty goofy. I think Texas will be better this year, and their schedule outside of Alabama, Oklahoma, and Baylor is definitely softer than ours, but that is pretty goofy all the same.

3 years ago doesn't factor into a preseason poll

I have little faith in a poll that when you look at the voting members, there is Napier (never coached a game in the SEC yet), Pittman, Saban, and Smart...only 4 representatives of the 65 voters from the best conference in all of football.

Also, if you look at the remaining 61 almost half are either first year head coaches or posted a losing record last year.
Coaches poll has always been a popularity contest to me - we start winning again and we'll move up in this poll quickly.
