Bull in the Ring: UT's defense ran a new drill at practice Tuesday that safety Janzen Jackson called "bull in the ring".

"(It was to) try to get some good competition out of the players," Jackson said.

"Practice has been kind of dry after the loss, so I think (the coaches) did that to spice up practice a little bit."

The spirited drill pits players one-on-one against each other in a circle with a simple goal: drive the other guy out of the circle.

"All the players like to go hard like that," Jackson said.

"It's just one man versus another man. A lot of times in the game you're going to be singled out like that (and) you just got to win."

Teague has no regrets in choosing UT GoVolsXtra

Thought this was interesting. I like it!
I like that were doing something like this again.

I remember bull in the ring from when I was a Maryville Southerner. Players make a ring and two players enter the circle and lay down on their backs. The whistle is blown and you get up as fast as you can and start shoving the other guy out of the circle.

We use to do that drill in high school. If you don't get jacked up doing that drill, then you are gonna get killed.

Practice has been dry after that game? Are you effing kidding me?! You get called out for quitting-which they did-and practice is dry-heading into the Florida game?....sigh.

Speaking of Teague-has he surpassed Evans as the #2 CB? I saw him out there a lot more than Evans last week-he was impressive. Definitely a better value at corner than receiver....good sign to ask our players if they are happy with their commitment decisions. Always leaves a nice feeling with the fanbase (facepalm).

That pisses me off right there.....I don't see how that can be.

Surely its not the first time running this drill...its one of those drills like the "oklahoma drill" that every team should do atleast once a week. Drills like this really helps build that killer instinct, something we lacked last week. The energy in the ring is usually through the roof.

Me, too. So I'm guessing that if they got 10 points down we get to see more quitting? Awesome. Can't wait for that. Dooley can call them all out again-keep doing it. Hopefully it will sink in. How Kiffin got this group up for the Bama game last year (given the effort we have seen from these players since then) I will never know.

Yeah, because they should go out there and just bust themselves ragged all week before the FLORIDA game. Fact is, what happened in that second half was mental, and no amount of drills in practice will change that.

Too many fans expect 100% practices, 200% games, which are just not possible.

Probably offered up his wife after the game if they won...or like the movie Major League where they took off a piece of clothing off the owners cardboard picture

Bull in the Ring
Blue Chipper

Burma Road.

All motivating, but all sucked. Damn, I can't believe I acted excited about that crap back in the day.

No kidding. My first recollection of "bull in the ring" is when I was 7, and playing pee wee football. Back then I was bigger than everybody so it was cool.

Fastfoward to high school, and "oklahoma" at the very end of practice was just rough.

I think Teague has great skill and a great athlete, but he is super rusty at the spot. He had some serious trouble getting off blocks sometimes. He likes to take the wrong angles. However, I have never been thrilled with Evans.

Maybe they're trying to teach JJ to hit somebody above the ankles. The 3rd and long on their initial TD drive was horrible. He had a killshot and dove at the grass.

Yeah, after the freshman season was over, a few of us got picked to practice and dress with varsity. I ws always nervous that id get picked to go against one of our beast senior linebackers or something..a couple concussions later, but I'm still alive!

We did something similiar in High School called bull in the ring. The whole team lined up in a circle. A volunteer (player w/ most ego) went to the center. That player chopped his feet and turned in a cicle while the coach yelled out a players number. That player would run as fast as possible to hit the one in the center. The guy in the center's goal was to move his feet, find the oncoming player, and step out to meet the player to deliver a blow of his own.

Very fun and rowdy.
