Like I said, I would at least make an attempt to hire Foster. Im not saying he would take it, but given the right amount money, he might take it. You never know.

Why would we ask him, just for him to turn it down to make it look worse about no one wanting to come here?

Where was all this talk about Bud Foster when we were needing a head coach?

Am I the only one who wanted him? Don't get me wrong I like the Dooley hire but Foster should have been offered the HC job after muschamp imo.

My thoughts exactly, however I do highly approve of Dooley.

This Thread is confusing...do we really wanna just start inquiring and fishing for coaches that are unlikely to come and tarnish our image even more right now. I hope not! Hammy and Co. need to keep it under wraps until its a done deal.

That's a good point & I agree.
On the other hand we orange people are so hungry for info, that these so called news people report stuff before anything is confirmed.

We've already gone thru 5 head coach done deals and 3 defensive coord selections in a week....that I know of.

All offering Foster will do is get him a pay raise. He is comfortable at Tech, has kids in school, makes great money, is the Head Coach in waiting, and has a very large bonus coming his way in 2011 if he stays there. If he wanted to leave Tech, he would have gone to Georgia or would be the HC at UVA. Foster to UT will NEVER happen!

I'm with you. Why wouldn't you make a list of dream choices and start calling. The worst that could happen is they say no. (On the other hand, we didn't do that for head coach, either...)

Seems like the image gets more tarnished by walking straight into the bargain department.

Exactly, i know Foster isn't planing on leaving anytime soon, but who's to say that for the right amount money, that he wouldn't leave? Especially when Wes Rucker reported that we're willing to pay up to $1,000,000 for a DC, and that is Foster kind of money my friends.

Per. TOS.....

Foster is making close to 400,000 and just agreed to a contract where if he stays until 2014 he would get 800,000......

Seems to me we would throw a million at the wall and see if anything happens.... I mean if we offered Kirby Smart 950,000 as reported. Foster would have to be a considered a better hire to me. It is worth a shot. All he could say is no.....

And he could have said no already..... Just a thought....

If Hamilton were stupid enough to hire Bud Foster as a head coach, I would go ahead and find another team to root for since Tennessee would have committed suicide by hiring a defensive coordinator that has never been at a major program, never had to recruit at a high level, and only had to coach a defense against a bunch of ACC offenses. Bud Foster will be a head coach somewhere, someday, but he is nowhere near Tennessee level. Memphis and East Carolina even passed on him... and he wanted the Memphis job.

Foster is pretty rooted in Blacksburg and has recently had opportunities to leave for head coaching jobs (West Virginia and Virginia). His children are in school at Va Tech and he has his own restaurant in Blacksburg. I don't think he is going anywhere.

To have opportunities to leave, you have to be offered the job. Foster lobbied hard for WVU, but decided they had to hire Stewart. Foster also lobbied for Memphis, but for whatever reason Memphis wanted that other guy from LSU. I think Foster is attainable for the right offer. It's not like he's getting paid a ton by Va Tech, and if you've seen Blacksburg you'd understand why he would want to leave. I say no harm in offering him, and obviously there's no way we could lose a bidding war to Va Tech.

He just re-uped for 800k thru 2014 with VT.

That isn't true. He makes somewhere South of 400,000... He will get 800,000 if he stays until 2014.

1 mil compared to 400,000 is quite a difference over 4 years time....

Spoken with truth.

My girlfriend goes to Tech. Blacksburg sucks hard.

The only problem is he is well rooted there, very well rooted, and is very close to Beamer. They've coached together for 30-some years.

That said, I would not want him to be my head coach at all.

Regardless of how well rooted you are, I think most rational people would take the doubled salary to go 3 hours down the road and work for a bigger program and get the opportunity to coach against some of the best teams in the country. I think he's stayed at Va Tech so long because he wants to be HC when Beamer retires, but becoming the DC at Tennessee wouldn't really hurt his chances at that, I don't think.

I would never want the guy to be our HC, ever, but I wouldn't be opposed to having him as a DC. My only concern with him is that he has a track record of being owned by SEC teams, but that probably has a lot more to do with the talent he has to work with rather than his coaching abilities.

He is just as good if not better than Steele. He would be a homerun hire in terms of a defensive coordinator. He is a proven recruiter of the Virginia area as well. I doubt he would leave Virginia Tech since he would be offered to coach the same position at Tennessee, but we obviously have enough money to get him here. Plus, he is from Somerset Kentucky, which is not far at all from Knoxville. Dooley should seriously consider giving him a call. BTW there's no chance in hell he is leaving Virginia Tech.

You gotta love how somebody starts a thread with an idea and, by the end of their post, they've talked themselves out of it.
