1. Folks had been asking for a more exciting brand of basketball and more offense, what’d you guys think? I definitely did not see that coming, A&M isn’t a juggernaut defensively but Tennessee looked like a completely different team on that side of the ball, unfortunately they also looked like a different team defensively which is why this was a ball game, kinda frustrating, but a conference win is a conference win. Texas A&M is on a losing streak, watching their season that at one point they thought was a lock for the NCAAT slip away, they came in desperate for a marquee win and Tennessee held them off.

2. How good was the offense? By my calculations they posted an offensive efficiency ranking of 128.6, that is their highest mark in 3 years against a P5 team, that goes back to the Admiral and Grant team that won 31 games. Taking 26 3’s and hitting 42% of them while also hitting 21-27 free throws will help a lot, we turned it over too much which is crazy to think considering our efficiency number. After tonight Tennessee will be around 34% from deep in conference play, that’s a solid number but trending in the right direction, a big part has been the right guys getting shots and Zeigler & James both finding their shots a bit.

3. Speaking of JJJ, that’s the best he has looked in a really long time, we can only hope that that is a sign of him possibly finding something. He got into foul trouble which he has to avoid because it basically ends any chance of us playing small ball, but even still, he goes 22 minutes 14 points 8 rebounds and played aggressive on the offensive end. He’s now 40% from deep over his last 7 games, that is huge for this offense and the spacing…again he has to stay out of foul trouble though because this team needs him out there 30+mpg.

4. To the negative, our defense, who thought that would be the case? 2nd worst performance of the year to the Kentucky game, allowed them to expire 114.2 offensive ranking which is bad…they capitalized off our turnovers in large part, and also 2nd chance points. Those are 2 areas you can clean up pretty easily for the most part so not full blown panic mode there, and when we made A&M score in the halfcourt we did pretty well, but still, would’ve been nice to see us not match a great offensive showing with a horrid defensive showing, but I guess it’s nice to see the offensive spark that might be there, now if you can find a way to mesh those 2.

5. I’m hesitant in doing so but I’ll give a shout-out to Nkahmoua, maybe it was just his turn for the roulette of which post player is going to show up, but he had a nice game. 15pts 7r be 3blk 6/10fg 1/2 from deep and 2/2FT, if you could clone that from him and match it nightly you would in an instant. He isn’t a finished product by any stretch, but he flashes athleticism and post moves that I don’t see from Plav or Fulk, he’s inconsistent and I get that, and his hands aren’t great, but he’s the most likely of the group imo to give you something out of the post, and the 3pt threat is an added bonus to that over the others.

6. Kind of continuing that thought, and it’s beating a dead horse, but I can’t wait and truly hope that at some point we see majority small ball from this group. For one 2 posts don’t deserve that many minutes in this group, the strength is in your guards and playing a little bit uptempo, and imo Nkahmoua really fits into kind of that modern 5 man role very well. JJJ rebounds great for a small 4 and Vescovi is a very good rebounding guard, I think you can hang, and it makes us much better defensively and spacing offensively. The big issue is in order to play it JJJ has to stay out of foul trouble, it seemed like tonight had the potential but JJJ was saddled with foul trouble all night.

7. Alright so big picture reset…heading into this 4 game stretch (A&M, @SC, @MSST, Vandy) I said 3-1 was the projected outcome and what we had to at least get, 4-0 would be a great result and build some momentum. A&M was projected to be the 2nd hardest of the 4, obviously doesn’t mean it’s impossible to lose the others but starting off with a win feels nice. SC isn’t just going to lay down at their place, I’m sure it will be a physical and rock fight of a game as Frank Martin games against us usually are, hopefully we take care of the ball and play with confidence offensively, road wins are never easy in conference play.

GBO!!!

Nkahmoua is so frustrating, but you can see the athleticism. With his size and athletic ability dude could single handily take over games. If he can get a few things pinned down, I honestly see an NBA future for him.

I'm sure next game i'll say he sucks.

FINALLY!!! Where has that offensive pace been?!?!?!? That is what I've been asking to see for months!

I'd love to go back, re-watch, and count the number of times we had a shot up within the first 15 seconds of the shot clock. I bet it was twice as many as any other game this season, easily so in conference play.

The pace seemed to stall a bit around the 15:00 minute mark in the 2nd half for some reason, but the first 25-30 minutes and then that spurt with about 5 minutes left was exactly what I want to see. Rebound and go, push it across the time-line, get a quick shot and pick up more possessions, transition buckets!

I can't think of a single player I'd really bag on too hard with the exception of Kennedy Chandler, who needs to be a more mature basketball player. The lazy pick-up ball passes have got to stop.

I'm pretty tough on Nkamhoua, but I'll be the first to point out that he played really well, tonight. Still had a couple easy misses and loose hands at times, but he more than made up for it. He even went to Chandler following a failed post feed and encouraged him instead of complaining to him. Much better body language and attitude, not to mention his actual play on the court. Good for him. Now do it, again.

JJJ was awesome. 14 pts, 8 rebs, 2 assts, 5 stls, 1 blk in only 22 minutes. He was aggressive, he finished at the rim, and he never looked rattled. And of course, was excellent, defensively.

Team defense suffered just a bit from an efficiency standpoint, but that is to be expected with the increased pace. You can't play that level of intense defense with that many possessions. It just isn't sustainable. Still, you'd like to see more of a middle ground. It may take a few games to make that adjustment if this is the new offense we will consistently see going forward. It may be an aberration (I hope not), but this pace was perfect, and we won't hold teams to scoring in the low 50s playing that way, but that's OK. We just can't let let play in the 80s.

^^^the shot clock part may be true, but there was only 70 possessions in the game, which is right at average for us. As for defense, that was our 2nd worse defensive showing from a PPP standpoint, and we’ve played much more uptempo games, it was REALLY bad.

Our turnovers were almost directly layups this game when I feel like we usually do better at getting back

Yeah, I'd be interested how many possessions we had in the 1st half vs the 2nd half. As I noted, there was quite a long stretch in the 2nd half where we took the air out of the ball. Now the scoring differential didn't change much because despite running the shot clock down, we made a lot of those shots with the clock inside 5-7 seconds.

I will take that kind of offensive production every night if it means we have a lesser defense. Just don’t be as bad as tonight on defense and that would be the perfect mix.

Played 11 tonight. The deeper you play, the more we are going to see periods of 'confusion.'
Pleased with the result. Gotta play well on Sat. and steal a road win.

34/36 according to my math

I got to go to the game tonight so that was awesome. Right out of the gate you could tell the energy was there with our guys. Most of the night the guys moved well on offense and moved the ball well. That led to better shots, whether inside or outside. Turnovers continue to be a problem. We simply dribble too much at times and A&M knew how and when to attack our dribble, especially in the second half. Overall though, we showed good fight when A&M kept pushing us, we played well offensively, and we got a solid win. It’ll be tough to go 2-0 these next 2 games but if we play offense like we did tonight then we can beat anyone and that includes UK and Auburn.

I wish Barnes would dive in and start Ziegler instead of Plav, but not sure that’s ever gonna happen. Also, great to see Powell hit a few HUGE shots off the bench to fend off that final TAMU push. When the guards are playing like they did tonight, this is a team that can beat anyone, anywhere.
On defense, I’m not as concerned as many are. Our turnovers on their high ball screen double teams led to several easy run outs, especially in the second half, and they hit several very very difficult, deep threes to spark mini runs. Overall on that end, if we had rebounded better/not allowed all the second chance points, I’d be pretty happy even with the defense.

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet so I’ll give a shout out to Justin Powell. Sure, he made some lazy, dumb passes, but so did every one tonight including Chandler.

Powell came up HUGE at the most critical point in the game. Back-to-back money! He has such a pure stroke that it is so frustrating he isn’t able to do this more often. I’m hoping this is the start of him building some confidence.

If he can get that swagger back, he would be a huge wild card in March. A guy that can go for 20-25 if you let him start feeling himself. At the very least, if he can build off this it bodes very well for next year. JUSTIN POWELL HAS ARRRRRRRIVVVVVVVEDDDDDD!

I like starting experienced players to cut down on mistakes early and digging a deep hole and it gives them a chance to figure out how the game will be called by the refs. If there are going to be cheap fouls called early I’d rather that Uros picks up a couple which won’t affect his 15-20 minutes but could really affect ZZZ’s 25-30. Plus ZZZ comes in with his insane energy about when the opponents are needing their second wind.

Last year half or more of the teams he faced were not good. He only played in 2 SEC games and he was 1 for 13 in those. I’m not really sure why the expectations ramped up so quickly with Powell. He’s still very early in his career.

"Allowed them to expire 114.2 offensive ranking..."
What does that mean, OP?
