I understand people who are concerned about the defense. I have said since the beginning of the season that we need to improve on defending the perimeter, but I don't understand how you can be upset with tonight's performance. Who cares if your opponent makes 12 three pointers if your team shoots 65% and wins by 17 with only 4 FTA's. The Warriors have never been the best defensive team in the NBA, yet they have won 3 of the last 4 titles with their unstoppable offense, and that's the way our offense looked tonight with Bone running the show.

I also hope the defense improves, but tonight was a great game for our Vols.
You can celebrate the win and still recognize that the perimeter defense is concerning. It isn't an isolated problem to one game where everything else went nearly perfect. It is a symptom of an ongoing problem, and if we don't shoot 66%, which we probably won't again all year, that issue is more important and magnified.

There’s a reason Bone is doing so well and Schofield isn’t. One is forcing shots and the other is not, and ironically I think it’s Bones NBA stock which has risen the most, not Schofield. He needs to quit forcing it

Admiral was 7-14 tonight. He was fine

Every game we get off to a great start and Barnes puts in Pons and Fulkerson it kills us. I love Barnes and don't want to question him but this just doesn't make sense based on how Pons and Fulky are playing. It seems like a 2 point lead is a 10 point lead with this team. Fun to watch for sure!
All 5 starters can't play 40 minutes, though. You have to get them some rest. What better time than when you're up 19 points? Fulk, Pons, and Johnson have to play better. I'm sure it hasn't gone unnoticed that they are the weak link and leads evaporate under their watch. Hopefully they are challenged by that.

Tennessee's D is set up to push the PG's outside the arc. That is where they lose their men at times or when the ball goes inside and then back out to the perimeter. Two of Tennessee's D men are left around one opposing player which frees up someone. So when the guy passes the ball or dibbles past those 2 defenders the opposing team has an open man. That's also why you find us going to zone. The Zags killed us with it.
I've also said since December that teams that are quick to the basket or has slashers to the basket are going to be our weakness as well are guarding the perimeter. Rebounding kills me. Teams get a lot of easy baskets.
Fortunately we have had the firepower so far to overcome those breakdowns. Mid February starts a whole new ballgame. enjoy the ride

Barnes mentioned in the presser that when he watches film he notices those players need for improvement on defense.

Clearly guys 7-10 aren’t as skilled as the first 6, but CRB has to find ways to try and develop them. I’d guess the rotation will tighten up during the NCAA tournament
Probably.....but Barnes has given them the chance to show what they had. Actually I think Fulky could contribute 10 or more a game if he just worked on his shot more. Does he want to be at the basket or 8-10 ft away. What is best for him. I thought he had 6 or 8 pts the last game. At some point one of those guys may be called on for twice as much time as they have put in. They are like the rest of the team in that they have to be able to score in whatever their role is on the team. I even thought Walker looked twice as good last game. They just need to be in control of themselves and let the game come to them and stop the quick fouling.

How is it we only shoot 4 free throws...Grant 4-4...the SEC front office needs to look into that and maybe those refs might need to go.

But they’re not like the rest of the team - they’re the bench that are trying to improve their play to the level of the starters. The starters weren’t that good 3 years ago as our record reflected. A good coach uses the regular season games to develop his team. Without going through some bumps you will never see those guys improve.

My remark was that at some point one of those guys may (because of injury like Bowden last week) be called on to play twice as many minutes as they have been playing. If ( if ) they can improve their play it will be a tremendous help to the team. There could be a game or games where a starter was just not ready to play because of some minor injury and it would be better if he sat out a game or two rather than risk further injury to himself. So I think these guys are like the rest of the team and should do all they can do to improve their play and fight for additional minutes. That's the way I see it.

1. We are ranked #1, hold a 20-1 record, the only undefeated team in the SEC, and just set a school record for longest winning streak...life is good for Tennessee hoops. It wasn’t pretty tonight but it’s not always going to be, Vols still round a way to win by double digits and lead wire to wire, hard to really complain about that too much considering it was a road conference game.

2. Jordan Bone is continuing to get more praise finally, I’ve been beating the drum all year but this guy is playing like one of IF NOT the best point guards in the country. 18pts 10ast 5rbd 2tos, 7-7fg 4-4 from deep, absolutely nutty stat line. As this team continues to play on a national stage he will get more recognition, but right now he’s very deserving of 1st team All-SEC and All-American honors as well, not a PG I would rather have in the country.

3. Turner & Bowden are playing phenomenal basketball right now, 35pts 15-28fg 11ast and just1to, that is absolutely bonkers...I love the lineup with Bone, Turner, Bowden, Schofield, Williams...we don’t see it a ton right now but late in games we’ve seen is a lot, and Alexander mixed in as well, I think those 6 are going to get as many minutes as they can handle come tougher games.

4. Seems crazy not to lead off with a guy giving you 22&10 that shoots 75%, but that’s just what we’ve come to expect from GW...he was very efficient tonight, and a very quiet 22pts, he played within himself and when we needed baskets he got us one or set up someone else, hard to put into words just how consistent he is out there.

5. Offensively we were amazing, I haven’t seen the final numbers yet but that probably will go down as our best offensive performance of the season...on the flip side that very well might also go down as our worst defensive performance of the season. As we’ve seen a few times this year a team that isn’t typically good from 3 shoots above their average from deep, so part of that was strategy and trusting percentages, but there was also some breakdowns as well. Additionally allowing 13 offensive rebounds, and who knows how many were putback dunks, is also a good way to make your defense look really bad...I’ve accepted we aren’t going to be a very good rebounding team, but some of our defensive performances are becoming worrisome especially considering the opponents.

6. Alright, I started the tracker weeks ago about looking ahead to UK...we’ve now gotten through the road slate and come back to TBA for 3 games against teams we’ve already beaten at their houses. If the Vols can win these next 3 we will be at 23-1(11-0) and headed to Lexington for what very well could be a Top 3 or Top 5 showdown with UK. The Wildcats are playing their best ball of the year and are regaining national title talk, talk about what a hyped up national game that would be, but first things first gotta take care of these next 3. With that said, if you’ve got a chance to get out there and watch these guys play do yourself a favor and do so, speaking solely regular season there’s a really good chance this team goes down as the greatest to ever wear the Tennessee jersey, get out there and witness history if you’re capable of doing so, if not then continue to tune in and cheer like crazy from your couch.

GBO!!!
Do you realize we are 3rd in the SEC in rebounding.

Wow, I can gladly say I was wrong here.

I said they’d win by 10 and they raised the bar a bit.
Nice job Vols!

Keep climbing and remain focused

UT about to play UK and LSU who have guys that feed off of rebounds. They can’t give up 13 offensive rebounds to UK and LSU’s bigs it will not turn out well.

LSU is like a roller coaster though one game they’re really high playing well and with anyone the next thier dropping a game they shouldn’t and stratching heads.

Stay focused, keep working and they’ll be fine.

Good work Vols!

Oh I agree but they still have two 6’10 220 and up guys that would love those offensive boards. Just an area that needs to be cleaned up is all.

Didn’t seem like Admiral forced too much tonight. Must have missed it.
Well because of the Indiana game I basically only saw the second half where TAMU had clawed back into it and he was 2 for 7. He was not getting good looks and forced many of them. Regardless I think it’s easy to say that Bones stock is on the rise.. Schofield has not been playing well lately and it seems as though he’s forcing too much.

And our competition so far has been ........................other than pre-season

But our real competition is about to begin Feb 16..........Athletes and leapers and speed.......How do you think we would fair if we were in the ACC in rebounding.
That's what it is going to be like down the stretch. I said Tennessee was fortunate that their schedule had the best teams on the backend of their schedule.
So hang on to those STATS because we will visit them as we play much stronger competition.

Until today, LSU hadn't lost in almost 2 months. How is that a roller coaster?

What’s w teams shooting so well from 3 against us? TAMU has been awful from 3 this year and then shoots 44%. I can see letting a team like that make shots to win... but then they start hitting...

The only catch to this theory is we will play harder against stiffer competition. Remember how we beat UK and Auburn in football, but yet almost lost to Charlotte.
