You just sparked an internet fued of epic portions. There are some serious JJJ haters hanging around here.

I think he is playing like he did two years ago and in particular during the end of the SEC season and tournament that we won. Now can he do it for the entire season. I do love his game.

I’m prepared for that. I’ve been a basketball junkie for my entire life. While I have desired to see James play more assertive on offense since he put on the Orange and White, he’s the only guy I’ve seen on Barnes’s Vols team who doesn’t have a glaring weakness.

James has been one of the leading scorers, leading rebounders, leading shot contesters - while playing every position on the floor because Barnes can’t seem to recruit an elite post player. He has been the ultimate teammate for four years and to say that he needs redemption is a damn joke. He’s been the most versatile player on the team, despite being a point guard. How often do you see a center or PG as the most versatile player? Magic Johnson? Jokic? It’s not a common thing to have a PG who can grab rebounds in the post most of the time he has position. His biggest downside is that he’s just too selfless on offense.

When he plays up to potential it's a thing of beauty. Just seems like he disappears for 5-10 games at a time and then he will turn it on for 3 straight. We'll need his best to beat Purdue tomorrow. Will be a fun game.

Syracuse was a really weird team their starting center is 7'4 and averages 4 points and 5 rebounds a game its like he only exists to get his 3 blocks a game but on the bright side he has made all of the 5 shots he's taken this season? their top 3 rebounders are all guards. I just don't see how a guy can be 7'4 and only average 2 shots and 2 rebounds a game. You'd think they'd be lobbing balls to him left and right or at least he'd get tons of putback dunks

Coach needs to get our guards out there early and show them where the out of bounds line is. It was maddening watching them step out so much.
It was that outer, extra 3-point line causing our OOBs calls. We space well, spreading as wide as possible. So by habit, years of habit for several, they visually back up so many inches from the 3-point line to receive the pass.

I expect we will get at least 3 OOB calls in today's game. That's just too instinctive to remedy in one day.

great original post
Loved Barnes let the game come to the guys when they were struggling.. we played some kick ass defense.
Purdue will be tough but I believe their fans are saying same thing about our guys.

Just watched the game (thanks again, Freak!) and I don't think I've EVER seen referees allow physical play in the first round of any tournament! That's just never done! Common sense says you call it close in early rounds to protect the players, then--maybe--you call the championship game a little looser.

That was just a bizarre game to watch. Players on both teams had no clue what kind of contact was going to merit a whistle, and which would get played through.

Great win. Good to see us battle through the loss of Awaka and Knecht. As for Purdue, I'm not sure any team has an answer for Edey. About the only way I can see us winning this one is if we go absolutely nuts from 3pt land. Should be interesting to see how we handle this one.
No, we don't have to go nuts from 3 to beat them

JP Estrella came in after the Awaka injury and played his ass off on the boards and made a great pass to Knecht for a 3.

Aidoo needs to take the ball at Edey tomorrow night and get him in foul trouble.
I think the announcers said Edey only had 2 fouls this season.

Edey obviously doesn't get into foul trouble, but he can get winded.

Yeah, he looked spent after the game, talking to the female reporter, beads of sweat were dropping from his face the reporter moving arm serpentine to avoid , not sure if he finally got her:D.
Hopefully is legs are dead, we do get a couple hours more rest.

Zeigler reminds me of when I used to come back to play ball after not doing so in forever. Like, everything seemed a little fast and rushed, plus you miss an odd dribble for some reason, as it slips away from you. It's a weird feeling and hard to fix other than simply playing more and having your timing come back.

Also, I like Santi's play today, but he needs to start hitting outside shots to open this offense up a bit more.
Santi always starts slowly, then seems to pick up his shooting percentage after 6-8 games. Knecht seems to be a really good finisher, so wondering how much better we could be if ZZ, Santi, and JJJ could become better finishers this year.

We missed so many shots at the basket in the first half---Ziggy and Mashack missed layups, with Ziggy giving it the hot-doggy one-hand form that's not a great look when you miss. Gainey missed a dunk, and there were a couple of others. Just a scratchy offensive effort--but played great defense in the last several minutes of each half and really shut down a young Syracuse team. Not liking Ziggy's game right now--6 TOs in 21 minutes. Beats his defender with the dribble, but then often gets 10/12 feet from the basket and has nowhere to go, has to stop and hope he can find somebody open with taller guys surrounding him. Not ideal.

JJJ with a super game. Santi is not scoring but 5 assists, 5 boards and only 1 TO is a very solid contribution. He will get going with his shot--and we need him to as we are already becoming very dependent--maybe too much so-- on Knecht.
The “unseen stat” that provides so much from Santi is the fact that he draws so much attention away from the ball. It definitely opens the floor a bit more, although it’s hard to quantify.

It was a very poorly officiated game all the way around. Went from no blood, no foul in the 1st half to breathing on anybody being called a foul in the 2nd half. And neither was correct. Find the gap in between those 2 and call it that way the entire game.

Spot on. He does so many things that an average fan just doesn’t see. When we no longer have him anymore many will come around.

I owe you an apology. I wasn't really familiar with your game. You made some great points, but I'd say a weakness of his previously has been his inability or unwillingness to drive the ball to the basket. He's been an elite player defensively, and a very streaky shooter from three during his career here.

And off to a hot start this year 57.1%! (8-14).... I realize it's highly unlikely that he keeps that percentage that high, but if he shoots 40%+ from 3 this year and keeps scoring the ball the way he has been I believe there's a chance he can get drafted in the 2nd round and be a 3 & D player bench player.

I’m giving Aidoo the green light and a pregame confidence boost from 3, pull that man away from the basket, I don’t wanna see anyone trying to post up and score on Edey. I’ve already stated it but even pre Awaka injury I would try JJJ at the 5 against him, offensively it’s a nightmare for Edey and JJJ is currently 60% from 3, defensively sure he can’t hold his own, but I’m doubling on the catch and making him a passer and rotating off lowest 3pt shooter.
