1. I’m sure there are going to be people complaining about how we looked, or how James looked etc...we are 2-0 and absolutely boat raced a quality team in the 2nd half to easily cover the spread. We played horrible the 1st half but played so well in the 2nd half the good was better than the bad. 1 turnover tonight combined between Turner, Bowden and James, and only 9 as a team, I would guess message received.

2. Stating the obvious, but quite the tale of 2 halves...lose the 1st half 44-35, win the second half 47-19, pretty incredible adjustments on both ends of the court. Offensive we took 6 less three pointers and shot 12 more free throws in the 2nd half than 1st, guessing that was a point made by Barnes at the half. Defensively we allowed them to shoot 50% the first half and 30% the second half, great adjustments.

3. Lamonte Turner struggled shooting, and the fact is that he may not show the same offensive given his increased ball handling role, but 14ast with 0to in 39 minutes of action is about as impressive as you will see from a PG. He also played really good defense tonight and “looked” like a true leader out there, again the offensive punch may not be there but that might be ok if he plays that way.

4. Yves Pons is a combined 14-18fg and 4-5 from deep...with 11 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. As I said last game I need to see this level of production for an extended period of time, but right now that move to the post is looking like an absolutely genius idea. His confidence level is clearly much higher and he just looks so much more comfortable.

5. Obviously Bowden was phenomenal, he’s got to look to score like that just about every night, he has the ability and he needs to continue to play with that aggression. He has the best all around offensive game of anyone on this team, he plays like that more often and he’s going to become a hot name among NBA scouts.

6. I once again was impressed by Nkamhoua, in 2 games he’s now a combined 33mins 15pts and 14rbds. He’s got a lot to learn but you can definitely see why Barnes and staff are so excited about him, he’s got the makings of a future star here at Tennessee.

7. The competition takes a big step forward on Saturday, an effort like either of the first 2 games and Vols probably don’t come home with a W. It’s a good opportunity for a nice early season win and tournament resume builder, but also a great chance to see just where the team is. With so many young faces I feel Turner and Bowden are going to be huge out of the gate and need to get Tennessee off to a good start. Either way...

Nothing much to complain about really even in the first half.

Just the lack of hustle, and the pizz poor rebounding (mostly from a lack of hustle).

7 turnovers in the 1st not great, but WAY improved......then just one in the second half.

The O was at 50% shooting in the first, kept it going in the second and ended with almost 55% from 3.

ST was WAY hot from 3 early......hard to stop, when someone is just shooting WAY better than normal......just got to tighten up a bit and they will cool off.

I doubt Tennessee comes out that lackadaisical any time real soon again.

Barnes is a great coach.

I'm a big fan of the Freshman and think they both will be on the floor at the end of ballgames. James does all of the little things good, he'll get better every time he steps on the court I think. Bowden/Turner can't have bad nights or we'll struggle. I think Johnson is gonna get much better with experience as well. This group plays hard and together, I think we're going to surprise some folks this year, starting Saturday.

Was very proud of how they responded in the 2nd half. They listened to coaching and started to create an identity. Turner controlled the game despite shooting horribly from the perimeter. He didn’t panic and made great decisions. Pons....just shocked with how well he played. Still entirely too perimeter oriented and still have concerns with lack of size, rebounding and depth, but this was a very solid win over a quality opponent. With so many young players and roles continuing to be defined, we have a lot to improve upon but I trust Barnes.

The defensive effort over the final 12 minutes was truly remarkable, especially with how poor it was in the 1st half. Barnes adjusted, his team adjusted, and it was the difference in winning and losing.

We outscored Murray St. 26-5 to close out the game after taking the final lead, and finished on a 16-0 run.

Pons has obviously put in Admiral Schofield-like work in the offseason, again. I was perhaps a year too early on him, as he was my breakout player for last season. Early returns suggest he may be that guy this year. He is just scratching the surface of his ability and his athleticism is unmatched. More confidence and quicker decision-making will only grow him as a player.

Turner showed a lot of maturity. I would have never guessed he was 2-12 shooting because he unselfishly realized it wasn't his night shooting the ball, so he decided to facilitate and create shots for other players. Really proud of him for being a leader, tonight.

Fulkerson brings an energy that we desperately need. He needs to learn to play without fouling, but his energy is contagious. Just a guy who fills that stat sheet.

Bowden has arrived. I have long compared him to Jordan McRae and Josh Richardson if he found their level of confidence. Tonight he showed me that he wanted the ball and wanted to carry his team. If he keeps that up, he will hear his name called on draft night in June. The skill and athleticism are clearly there.

Looks like we may have found our go to plays and players that Freak was asking about last game. Turner coming off screens on the baseline, Pons postup turning into a faceup, and Bowden on the wing or coming off a screen on the baseline.

2nd half defense.

Lamonte getting into the paint in the 2nd half.

Bowden being patient and letting the open looks come to him.

The bench didn't hurt us. Everybody made a contribution.

O(R)N is getting valuable minutes. He might be the difference of getting to the NCAAT or not minus Uros and Fulk picking up too many fouls.

Pons from the top of the key. Pops. Drops. Bottom!

Thanks BTO, great write up!

I didn't realize Turner was 14/0 AST/TO
Simply Amazing

Same thing with Pons shooting!

Our second half was amazing all around, the shooting was great, the defense was phenomenal (0 points allowed in the last 7 minutes), and only 1 TO is crazy good.

If we can improve/get NCAA to cooperate for our post play, this can be a NCAA team poised to do damage.

At current, we should still be inspired by what we just accomplished. Murray is not an easy win and may even be more talented.

A few observations:

Fulkerson almost got a double-double, just like last game, and very little mention.

Pons also had 4 blocks. Like I said last game, he's not just an athlete, he is a basketball player now.

"Komwa" had 8 points. I would not have guessed that.

Pember played 2 minutes apparently. I didn't even notice.

I thought Kent played better this game. His minutes will likely be badly needed this year.

Tough game for me to watch -- Vols fan for decades but a Murray graduate. Racers shot the lights out in the 1st half; Vols turned up the D in the 2nd, especially in the last 12 minutes. Both teams still have questions that need to be figured out, but I also saw positives going both ways.

The second half felt like they figured out how they are going to play the rest of the season. First game, and first half of this one just didn’t flow well on the offensive end. But that second half shows what our team should look like going forward

Kent has to get it figured out.

He has size and a very nice shot......just gets lost at his position.

Hope he can figure it out.

If we can get 25 points and 30 rebounds a game from the trio of Fulkerson, Kent and ORN, I would be happy with that from the interior players and Pons had a hell of a defensive game with 3 blocks as well as the points.

Pons and Fulkerson are excellent rim protectors.

JJJ is lost, Kent is lost, blah blah blah is lost.

Pfffffffft.

Huh?

Not sure James is lost. He contributes, he doesn’t hurt the team, he plays D......he isn’t great, but he is a true freshman playing in his second game.

It’s not like Tennessee landed a top 5 guy.

If you think Kent hasn’t looked “lost”.....that is cool, but at his position.....he seems it to me.
