1. I’m sure there are going to be people complaining about how we looked, or how James looked etc...we are 2-0 and absolutely boat raced a quality team in the 2nd half to easily cover the spread. We played horrible the 1st half but played so well in the 2nd half the good was better than the bad. 1 turnover tonight combined between Turner, Bowden and James, and only 9 as a team, I would guess message received.
2. Stating the obvious, but quite the tale of 2 halves...lose the 1st half 44-35, win the second half 47-19, pretty incredible adjustments on both ends of the court. Offensive we took 6 less three pointers and shot 12 more free throws in the 2nd half than 1st, guessing that was a point made by Barnes at the half. Defensively we allowed them to shoot 50% the first half and 30% the second half, great adjustments.
3. Lamonte Turner struggled shooting, and the fact is that he may not show the same offensive given his increased ball handling role, but 14ast with 0to in 39 minutes of action is about as impressive as you will see from a PG. He also played really good defense tonight and “looked” like a true leader out there, again the offensive punch may not be there but that might be ok if he plays that way.
4. Yves Pons is a combined 14-18fg and 4-5 from deep...with 11 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. As I said last game I need to see this level of production for an extended period of time, but right now that move to the post is looking like an absolutely genius idea. His confidence level is clearly much higher and he just looks so much more comfortable.
5. Obviously Bowden was phenomenal, he’s got to look to score like that just about every night, he has the ability and he needs to continue to play with that aggression. He has the best all around offensive game of anyone on this team, he plays like that more often and he’s going to become a hot name among NBA scouts.
6. I once again was impressed by Nkamhoua, in 2 games he’s now a combined 33mins 15pts and 14rbds. He’s got a lot to learn but you can definitely see why Barnes and staff are so excited about him, he’s got the makings of a future star here at Tennessee.
7. The competition takes a big step forward on Saturday, an effort like either of the first 2 games and Vols probably don’t come home with a W. It’s a good opportunity for a nice early season win and tournament resume builder, but also a great chance to see just where the team is. With so many young faces I feel Turner and Bowden are going to be huge out of the gate and need to get Tennessee off to a good start. Either way...
GBO!!!
