Spot onI will attribute some of the offensive rebounds to the zone defense, which we did not play well. I will attribute a few turnovers to having to use Bowden or Grant to bring the ball up. If Bone doesn’t pick up 2 quick fouls or if Turner is healthy, they probably don’t happen. We did have a couple of lazy plays- I recall Bone missing a pass and Walker having butterfingers.
What can be done when a ref is that one-sided? Any remedies for a team? Can you non-request an official?Ref named Owen Short has it out for TN. Refs on average blow their whistles 25 times each per game. 2 refs today had right at 25 each. Owen Short blew his whistle 46 times today. He did the same thing (44x) in the Louisville game. Owen Short called EVERY foul on Williams and EVERY foul on Schofield. Called foul on Grant from 45' away and the ref 10' away did not call it.
43 minutes into the Basilio post game. Ref-eletics Judd.
59 fouls isn't average. Not that it was favored one way or the other but it killed the whole flow of the game and was painful to watch.I had to watch the replay of the game as well; that's after reading all the posts when the actual game had been played.
I thought the officiating was pretty average. Yes, Memphis had some flops. I thought, all in all, the calls were balanced both ways. Like all games, there were some calls that should have been play-ons, and there were some calls that were wrong. However, I don't feel they were favored by one team or another.
I'm really not sure what actions @cardvolfan alluded to so many times that portrayed Memphis and/or their staff as thugs. Even considering the late-game drama, I don't see how a Vol fan could overtly complain about antics. Pretty standard stuff if you ask me.
Not much else to comment on imo. TCOB and another W for the good guys. Can't ask for much better execpet for defensive execution in certain spots. Free throw shooting was obviously looking much better too.
Hardaway is still unproven, but I'm interested to see what he does at Memphis. If he continues the tradition of bringing in solid recruiting classes from the W. TN area, we will have an answer soon.
Last, but not least, I'm excited for this series in general. It's great to have a legit in-state rival that's not Vandy, and I look forward to see the match in Knoxville next season.
GBO!

Worst defensive rating of the seasonThe Defense wasn't bad, we had to play zone because of foul trouble.
Actually, the Defense was pretty good, we held them to 43% shooting FG's, we shot 52%.
The real story was we had 18 TO's compared to only 9 TO's for them.
We should cancel this series, does us no good, and drags us in to the gutter with them.
Sorry for the delay, wasn’t able to watch it live so had to go off th DVR...
1. I had forgotten how much I dislike Memphis, I don’t know what it is but they just make a good team to hate. Maybe it was the chirping from Schofield early on, the hostile crowd, Lomax jawing at Bone or Penny postgame telling lies and saying Tennessee players were trying to fight his, but it was great to beat Mempisss once again and show them who runs the state of Tennessee in basketball.
2. I’m guessing nobody who was questioning Schofield early on is still here are they? 29pts 11rbd 8-12fg 4-8 3ptfg 9-9ft, have yourself another game young man, he is quickly starting to get the attention from NBA personnel and rightfully so, there is nothing wrong with Admiral as some asked, in fact he looks even better to me.
3. Rick Barnes is looking like a genius for moving Bowden to the bench, another strong and maybe more importantly confident showing from him yet again. Maybe watching the game develop helps him out, he played 34 minutes which was 2nd highest on the team, so he might as well be a starter.
4. Offensively we were pretty damn good, especially when not turning the ball over, 18 turnovers is way too many and really the only reason this game was as close as it was. If we keep that number around our average you’re looking at a 18-20 point win, gotta be cleaner with the ball...Schofield and Bone uncharacteristically combined for 10 turnovers, it looked as if the smaller/quicker guards bothered those 2 guys a bit. Still though, 52%fg 38%3pt 85%ft is about as good as you can ask for, that’s going to win you a ton of games.
5. Defensively we were pretty awful, if not the worst we’ve been all year. Allowing a pretty average offensive team to put up 92pts and shoot 43%fg 35%3pt and shoot 22 free throws is not good defense. Too many times their guards got by our first line and they had wide open 3’s or an open look underneath. To this point the defense isn’t at the level it was last year, Barnes has said it’s mainly a lack of focus and attention to the scout, need to get that cleaned up.
6. One area that has been a common theme as a negative has been free throw shooting, that was not the case today....39-46 for 85%, that is what I’m talking about. If the Vols can get that average up around 75% as a team the offense becomes that much more efficient, and they’re already very good offensively. The other area mentioned has been rebounding and that was once again lacking today, especially giving up 18 offensive rebounds to them, that shouldn’t ever happen, I know some were long rebounds off missed threes but still.
7. Vols are sitting at 8-1 and there’s no real reason with 3 upcoming home games left in the OOC slate that they shouldn’t be 11-1 by the time SEC play rolls around...they’ve still got some things to clean up which all teams do, and also I don’t think you’ve seen the best this team has to offer which is a scary thought, but that’s part of the excitement right now. This was a game I think Lamonte Turner would’ve really helped you in and hopefully he is getting closer and closer to returning, GBO!!!
I dont know if it was the plan to go 2-3 zone that much or because of the fouls, but I attribute that to the bad defensive performance today. I don’t think we’re a zone team. We get beat too much out of it. I am see using it as a change of pace to throw off teams a couple series here and there, but I think we should be man to man 90% of the time
I was in C2 for my first game at the Forum. Great arena once you reach your seat, but their poor signage made it very difficult for this newbie to find his section. Ushers were good though.
After the technicals, an adult UM fan turned around from 15 feet away, looked at me, and said my 'POS players were in their huddle'. I hadn't said anything cross to anyone. I just looked at him like, 'huh?' That moment, the end-game booing, and Penny's comments about our team leaving the bench to clinch their fists for a fight were my introduction into how much Memphis hates UT. That's the first time I've lived it in person.
