BTO’s Kentucky postgame report

I have to admit that crossed my mind but every SEC game is crucial, especially home games. Awful expensive lesson to teach on.

Sure. Just a huntch but he likely had seen a rough practice or two and just felt it there was nothing he could do. Who knows though but I am not going to question his effort that is for sure

Pearl and Barnes are friends too, so not sure. Maybe he knows beating UK being at UT is at the top of the list of things you want to get done.

And being 0-2, facing 0-3 with an 8 point deficit to UK at halftime, he knew his team needed an attitude adjustment. Coming out of his skin is more effective when he isn't a raving lunatic every single game.

We need to follow this up by kicking Vandy's ass Tuesday night.

I think we do. The start of SEC play is going about how I exptected. I though the Arkansas game would come down to the wire. And I thought Auburn would be a very tough rebound. But I was optimistic against UK and Vandy. Tamu is a very tough matchup and while I expect to be favored, they have a great chance of winning. The game I have the least confidence in is at Missouri. So hopefully we can beat Vandy and manage to beat TAMU. 3-3 I can live with. 4-2 would be great

Very good summary OP. It was 2 entirely different Vols effort. They couldn't get anything going in the 1st half against KY D. The 2nd half the Vols got great efforts on both the offensive and defensive ends. Grant Williams came alive after only 2 FT's in the first half.

Where was Barne’s fire & energy in the Auburn game?

He looked like a completely different coach tonight.

No sense wasting his energy when his team didn't want to be there. If the players aren't going to listen (Barnes said multiple times that they weren't doing what was instructed coming out of TOs), why should he? The players were engaged and looked to do everything that was instructed. Amazing things happen when that happens.

Imho Barnes saw a team that wasn't ready to play and let them hang themselves against Auburn. Used it as a teaching moment.

I also believe this is true... reminds me of when Pat Summit did this when Candace was playing... she just sat in the stands for a couple of practices and let the team do what they wanted.

I kind of figure that was it unless he had also been battling the flu. He's learned a thing or two about motivating players in the last 40 years. Sometimes being un characteristically quiet is louder than yelling. In the Auburn post game he emphasized that they know what they're supposed to do... they just weren't doing it.

What difference do you all think the double technicals against the coaches made? I think we were already more fired up, but I think it helped us to maintain our intensity for the rest of the half. After the Auburn game, and the first half, I think we needed that.

I think that the double technical on Turner and their #1 was more critical. First foul on our #1 and the third foul on KY's #1.

I think it put the officials on notice that Barnes wasn't putting up with that ish anymore. The foul called on Grant was the biggest pile of steaming horse **** I've seen in a while.

I had a good look at it. Grant absolutely threw his lip into the KY players elbow.

I'm just glad we made it to the end of the game with a full team on the floor. Out of 11 scholarship players we only had 8 suit up tonight. 3 of those were already battling the flu. PJ was having cramps. It was not a good night to have foul trouble lol.

Not so sure the bug wasn't impacting the team at auburn...at least with some of the guys. Dealing with that crud myself. Robs you of energy and endurance. With the team suffering with it, fans just need to accept this will be a rocky couple of weeks until this makes its way through the team. Gimme 3-3 and a healthy team n the other end and this bunch will be n a very strong position for the second half of this sec season and looking very, very strong for the dance. Great win last night.

Auburn had the advantage as the road team one day after New Year's.

They traveled to Knoxville on New Year's day. They were together with the coaches that night and not carousing about at parties. They must have had a lot more focus than UT.

UT appeared unfocused and with low energy the next day.

New Year's likely had a big effect on them -- negatively.

I'm just glad the gang woke up in the 2nd...the Cat's foul trouble helped but we had a little something to do with that...when this teams plays with spirit and passion...they is tough...now, if they can just manifest this every game, then we're on to something good...just really proud of the adjustments...not just strategy, but in their heads...:)

GO VOLS!

Didn't seem like the usual coach speak. They evidently have known each other for 30+ years iirc. I've had some games where my friend and I beat the crap outta each other on the court. But at the end we'll shake hands and say good game. Something about playing a friend who won't stop letting me hear about a loss makes it extra special. Just my opinion at least.

I'm no althlete, but there is something about competing against a friend in anything that will bring some fire out that may not always be there. This is especially true in anything you both excel in or are evenly matched.

Hadn't considered that angle. Very possible. Good post.
