Bryce Brown facing eligibilty issues

I hope and believe with others here that this will all be fine eventually.

I also hope that potential recruits out there learn to stay away from these slimeball pseudo-advisors who are only looking to line their own pockets!

where did it ever say he got rich off these kids? While I do think it's a bit odd he still helped get recognition and college scholarships for some deserving young men.

I think that you need to check your information on the subject before you are so quick to judge, jmo.

I'll have to admit that I did not like Butler at all during the recruitment of BB (charging for info on PP), but after hearing his interview today my sense is that he really cares about BB and did not do anything whatsoever that would jeoporadize BB eligibilty or violated any NCAA rule. He was very complementary of UT and Kiffin. I guess as situations change so do perceptions, but I genuinely feel he's a decent guy.

I agree to an extent.....but I still can't get past the fact that this guy was trying his hardest to make a profit off of a 17 year old kid. Had he not been a "handler" / "mentor" / whatever, and tried to make some money off of BB, then I seriously doubt the NCAA would looks so hard at this whole situation.

Just my opinion.

There's an entire multimillion-dollar recruiting industry based around making profits off of 17 year old kids. Why is what this guy was doing so much more reprehensible than what Jamie Newberg does?

Butler said money was raised for that tour by hosting barbecues at Wal-Mart and Sam's, a fund-raiser at Texas Roadhouse, as well as money given by four donors whom Butler did not identify.

.
Turns out ole Phil was behind this.

This guy wanted money for information on ONE guy, not an entire class. But this argument could go back and forth and back and forth.......

I knew someone would say something like this, that is why I put it as "my opinion".

He just kinda comes off as a sleezeball.

What is garbage is that Chris Low is reporting this as "Tennessee is in trouble again"...

low is just trying to sensationalize the story in order for people to view his article.

surely he's smart enough to know that ut is not in trouble.

once people read that article, because most will, they'll realize (if written accurately) that this investigation has nothing to do with ut.

I read his article on ESPN and did not read that anywhere. Can you provide a link to where you read this? I am not doubting anyone but I would like to read how Low thinks that this is something that TN did.

ESPN says NCAA says he can play during investigation, so that's good.

That is good. I am still having a hard time coming to grips with this BS. If his brother and the other players were being investigated, then I could accept this for the most part. However, BB is the only one. This screams of a set up, IMO

Tom Abraham just said he was told from one of his most reliable sources that this should be over by tomorrow and Brown would be cleared to play.

At the most, Brown would repay the money and sit out a couple games, jmo. It is also my opinion that the NCAA may have been tipped to something bigger involving either Brown/Butler or UT and this gives them legitimate reasons to kick over stones and see if they find anything.

Bryce is going to be one motivated son of a gun when this is all said and done. He sounds like a great kid and his name has been slung through the mud. Thanks to all for making the chip on his shoulder a lot bigger.

Not that I wasn't a bit hesitant about Butler during BB's recruitment, but I would absolutely love for this investigation to reach epic fail status.

If the NCAA is allowing him to play during the investigation that tells me that nothing will come of this in regards to BB's eligibility.

If the NCAA had anything at all on Brown then he would not be allowed to take the field and would redshirt this season during the investigation.

I sure hope so. The last thing we need is for this crap to drag on into the season.

I saw Bryce Brown walking to class, and he was walking perfectly fine with no limp... possibly with theraputic sandals.

I really wasn't that worried about the possibility of Brown losing eligibility over this. I just want this to be over in time for the season to start so we can just focus on football and nothing else.

Would anyone like to lay odds on who brought this to the NCAA's attention?
The NY Times wrote a lengthy article about Bryce Brown and Butler, his "handler", back when UT was recruiting Bryce and others like Miami were backing off. The NCAA was already looking into Butler's activities to some extent way back then.

UT had to have known back then that there was at least some degree of risk regarding his eligibilty. I would think that UT was extra careful to make sure they wouldn't be at risk beyond the possibility of having to hold Brown out pending determination of his amature status.

Any notions or suggestions that some other school(s) in some way "turned in" UT for something in hopes of them getting in trouble with the NCAA are not only baseless but laughable.

Here's another article with a little more/different information:

Kansas.com: NCAA investigating Bryce Brown's eligibility (LINK)

FWIW, I don't think BB will lose any eligibility. Y'all just need to hope and pray that the NCAA will get their investigation wrapped up and a decision made ASAP. Good luck with that.

That's an interesting idea. I could easily see a coach like Meyer being highly upset and raising some questions about how Kiffin secured a higher, top 10 rated class.

There is no doubt in my mind that the SEC commissioner Mike Slive would listen and so would the NCAA.

The media's eagerness to run with every bit of information regarding Kiffin/UT is amazing. It's rare that you see someone that is so universally hoped to be a failure.

I think that the combination of Kiffin+UT=perfect media hate storm.

A lot of us have noticed a slight bias against UT by the major media that fanatics deem a conspiracy but it has reached all-time heights since Kiffin was hired.
