Bryce Brown facing eligibilty issues

I don't think anyone here actually thinks we need Bryce Brown to beat WKU. The problem though is that would be a great warm up game for the bigger games and the experience for a freshman will be priceless and play dividends down the road. It sucks though that he might not play against WKU because the NCAA decided to investigate him. There should be a process in place before a player can sign with a school he/she has to be cleared by the NCAA and they can't go back and reinvestigate their highschool years.

I hope Kiffin plays him against WKU and UT supports that decision.

this investigation has been going on since feb. funny how it all comes to light right now. i think they let the kid play, but that's just my opinion.

Murder trials have taken less time. NCAA efficiency sucks ass.

heard on the radio UT was not under investigation just BB (funding camps) ,becuase it was from his soph year and there was 5 other players involved but BB is the only one being investigated

Why is it just BB getting investigated??? Doesn't seem fair but life's not fair! Hopefully nothing comes from it.

From this article in the Wichita Eagle there were several other future D-1 players on the Butler academic tour. But it appears they are only targeting Bryce.

NCAA investigating Bryce Brown's eligibility
BY JOANNA CHADWICK
The Wichita Eagle

At question is money raised for Brown and several other players while Brown was a sophomore at East, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin told the Web site Govolsxtra.com.

Kiffin said Brown is currently eligible, but confirmed after practice Tuesday in Knoxville, Tenn., that the NCAA is looking into his eligibility.

"They can rule whenever they want," a visibly frustrated Kiffin said.

In February, the NCAA interviewed East coach Brian Byers and former Northwest player Colby Duranleau, apparently with the intent of learning more about Brown adviser Brian Butler, as well as Butler's role as an adviser to Brown and other players. Butler had trained Duranleau and Brown among others.

Reached Tuesday, Butler and Byers both said they assumed the current NCAA investigation was connected.

"This is obviously, you know, about the initial, the investigation," Butler said. "This is nothing different, but they haven't re-contacted me at all about anything. But from what it seems to be, it seems like the same thing. I don't know anything that's new.

"The only thing I can tell you, truthfully, is that we've done everything right, nothing illegal, and I think a lot of the stuff stems from the New York Times article."

The New York Times wrote an article about Butler in February.

Byers added that he was told by NCAA investigator Mike DeCesare, NCAA assistant director for amateurism certification, that it would be a long, ongoing investigation.

"If I was the NCAA, I would investigate it, too," Butler said. "I'm 100-percent confident that we did nothing wrong, and that we followed the guidelines from freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years. I'm very confident in that.

"He's the No. 1 player in the country and obviously the NCAA is going to take a look at it. I'm more concerned with Bryce's well-being, and I would love for him to be able to focus on football instead of anything else."

Brown was one of 10 players who went on a summer 2007 tour to college campuses in the southern part of the country. Butler billed it as an academic tour.Players on that tour included Brown and his brother, Arthur, who is at Miami (Fla.); Rose Hill graduate Blaize Foltz, now at Texas Christian; Northwest graduate Chris Harper, who transferred from Oregon to Kansas State; and 2008 Top 11 selection Jaydan Bird, a Conway Springs graduate now at Oklahoma.
Foltz's father, Roger, said that he has not been contacted by the NCAA. Harper's parents did not return a call Tuesday seeking comment.

Butler said money was raised for that tour by hosting barbecues at Wal-Mart and Sam's, a fund-raiser at Texas Roadhouse, as well as money given by four donors whom Butler did not identify.

"I deemed it initially, and marketed it that way, as an academic tour," Butler said. "I know you can't get money donated when it has anything to do with athletics....

"Here's the thing that bothers me, I feel like this is strictly a shot at Bryce because no kid paid one penny."

Brown rushed for 57 yards on 10 carries and had three receptions for 27 yards in a scrimmage Saturday.

Kiffin told Govolsxtra.com he was so excited that he sent a text message to Brown late Saturday night after the scrimmage.

" (I) told him that he was really going on the right track and he was really going to be special," Kiffin said, recalling his text.

Brown missed Monday's practice with a hip injury. He returned in full pads Tuesday but did not practice, instead riding a bike on the sideline.

Rediculous that he is facing questions for something he did when he was 15 years old. From what I'm hearing, he could be ineligble for a couple games. May be able to play the Florida game. We need him that game, the other two we should be fine without. Would just like to see him get some real playing time in before the Florida game.

was paying Brown and his family cash money, then maybe there's an issue here. But I very much doubt that he was--and you can't mess with a kid's eligibility over some bus trip he took when he was a HS sophomore. C'mon, let's get real here. People like Butler and other "handlers" should be looked at and chased away from the prospects early on, but unless there is more here than this bus trip/tour of the south, the NCAA should not mess with Brown's eligibility.

What I find very funny about the NCAA...Reggie Bush's family takes over $300k from USC boosters and the NCAA has no idea about a kid from the projects moving to the suburbs until after he graduates.

Folks this is the way CFB has become, its about money and the SEC has the worst reputation of any conference as far as recruiting and illegal practices.

I know this has nothing to do with Tennessee but I find it odd. Remember this is the same program D Oku went through as well

As soon as I read the article, R. Bush was the first person to come to mind. THE NCAA CAN GO TO HE*L!

This is a witch hunt. I have wondered about why the NCAA has not gone after World Wide Wes and his issues with Calipari?

Also, am I the only person who sold things playing little league football and baseball to help rasie money for uniforms or trips to NFL and MLB games? Does that make me ineligible?

I feel sorry for this kid, but other kids need to really take a look at this situation and realize that there are alot of people out there who want something from you. I'm sure Butler is a good guy but his tactics now have put this kids future in jeopardy. People like Butler, WWW and many others are only doing things for the all mighty dollar not for the kids best interest.

Tennessee Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin says NCAA investigating Bryce Brown's eligibility - ESPN
Butler said he took Brown and the other players on a trip during Brown's sophomore year. He loaded the players on a bus and traveled to Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and SMU, among other schools.

"We raised money for the trips with barbecues in front of Sam's Clubs and Wal-Marts," Butler told ESPN.com. "I called it an 'academic tour.' My intent was to broaden the minds of our young players."

It will be very hard for the NCAA to find anything unless somebody out there willingly has info and wants to give it to the NCAA...

Once again, the NCAA is trying to hose UT, while other schools get off for doing the same thing! It's probably alabama or florida that reported this to the ncaa!

Its pathetic how Chris Low reported this. That fat slob makes it sound first off like Bryce is in the same camp as Reggie Bush, he mentions nothing about it being $ raised when he was 15 for a school tour. Then he makes it sound like Kiffin landed Brown bc everyone else knew trouble was brewing, and so Kiffin, the trouble maker he is, happened to be the only one left offering a scholarship. Can't believe this Krispy-Kreme poster child is allowed to write for espn.

I suppose if Brown sold lemonade to raise money for camp that would make him a profesional VENDOR? Is it fair for rich kids to pay their own way to football camps----thereb enhancing their chances as a recruit; and possibly making a difference in their ability to earn a better living down the road----if less fortunate kids aren't allowed to raise the funds for the same purpose? I don't think the NCAA wants to go down that road. God knows Al Sharpton makes me want to puke------However--:ermm::ermm::ermm::ermm:
