Bryce Brown (CLOSED)

the way ppl are talking about bryce brown, i dont see why he cant lead a team the same way dixon did. my point is that he is gonna get exposure no matter where he goes.

Dixon did not get his exposure until Sr year. Games on the west coast are late in the day and 11 out of their 12games will be meanless. How much exposure did the team that upset USC get this year? About 30 minutes of fame. You play a late Saturaday game and it is reported on the East Coast on Sunday admist the NFL Previews which is very minimal at the most. So no you do not get the exposure except in tidbits on Sat and virtually none on Sunday because of the NFL.

Hubbs confirmed his intention to visit. That's as much confirmation as you'll get until he actually shows up. See Pat Patterson...

I think your referring to Hubbs believing that we might get a visit, if I remember what he said correctly. Brown getting on campus would be a big deal and there is just no way in my mind a big deal isn't made out of it 3-4 days before it happens. I hope it does, but I still don't know if I want the kid.

I have gone back and forth on this. My final assessment is this: if he wants to be here then I think it will be a good fit and he will do well in this system. But if he is coming for the wrong reason's or his "mentor" is calling the shots then he will be a distraction and not worth having as member of the Big Orange.

And just as an ego thing it would be great to land the No. 1 guy in the country! :eek:hmy:

Getting BB would be absolutely huge. It would let everybody in the country know that UT has stepped their game up. BB can also be an impact player from day one. Just keep us informed Matt.

You guys are completely insane if you don't want this guy in an orange jersey next year.

Yep. It's a no-brainer. You don't turn down the top player in the country because of perceived "ego" issues. If you have a chance to sign him, you do it.

If he screws up once he's on campus, you deal with it then.

I read an interview with bryce brown after the NYT article, and it's possible that he's not getting a fair shake from the media.

No. I am referring to this:
I am hearing as was said last night that Brown is going to try and be here for a visit next weekend. That could change, but that's what I am hearing this afternoon.

Straight from Hubbs.

I really think you are jumping to far too many conclusions on this kid, Eric. Comparing him to Pacman Jones??? This guy has no obvious character flaws. He seems very well-spoken, the flurry and activity of the recruiting process overwhelmed him and he decided to take a step back. Far more condemning actions have taken place on the part of recruits who turned out just fine. I don't think it's fair to pass judgment on a guy and compare him to cancers like Pacman Jones when he hasn't done anything to deserve it. He hasn't been in trouble with the law. Some of you are basing your opinion of this kid off of your impression of this Butler character and that's not fair. As has been stated, Oku is connected to him as well and there isn't nearly the fuss over him as there is Brown.

I just don't think it's right to bash a kid when you have no solid evidence whatsoever to back it up. The kid seems very intelligent, is very well-spoken, and neither he nor his brother have every been in any sort of trouble.

The other side of the story

In a story about Brown's adviser Brian Butler that ran in Wednesday's edition of the New York Times, East coach Brian Byers criticized Butler's Potential Players program and Brown's unwillingness to put the team first.

Byers did not return phone calls from The Eagle seeking comment on Wednesday.

"It's always been him and then everybody else," Byers said about Brown to the New York Times. "Our team chemistry was nonexistent."

Brown, rated the No. 1 running back recruit in the country by Scout.com and Rivals.com, was at his uncle's house in Nebraska when he read the article.

"I couldn't believe it. He never came out and said anything to me," Brown said. "We always had an open line of communication. This is the first time I've heard about it. If this is how he felt, why didn't he address it?"

Brown rushed for 1,850 yards and 31 touchdowns for East his senior year. East changed to a spread offense before the season, and Brown never complained publicly about the change in offensive philosophy.

"I didn't agree with the offense, but I bought into it. I rode with it because that's what the coach wanted us to do," Brown said. "Team chemistry. I had my offensive line over for dinner on Thursdays. I offered to play wide receiver in some sets. I was willing to do whatever if it was going to get the win."

The Times said Byers felt Butler promoted a selfish approach that showed in Brown's play. "It's all about me, me, me," Byers said in the article. "That's not what football is about. We're a proven fact. We had supposedly the best football player in the country in high school, and we went 6-3. We didn't have a team because of that."

Butler has been working with Bryce and older brother Arthur Brown for four years. While Butler admits to not cheering for "teams," he disagrees with the perception that he promotes selfish play.

"I am a fan of players and not teams," Butler said. "Because of my business I can't support a specific team. However, I teach team-building and stress the importance of team chemistry. So if I was telling players to be all about them, I'd be doing the exact opposite of what I believe in."

Butler believes that Byers disliked him before he became the head coach at East before the 2006 season. Even though he detected it, Butler said that he never went over Byers' head when it came to recruiting.

"He had an opinion of me before he met me," Butler said. "I never had any ill will against Coach Byers. I don't know why he has anything against me. We always kept things open and opened the door for him to be there, but he never accepted."

Brown orally committed to Miami last February, however has decided to hold off on signing until he takes his final two visits. He is expected to sign in March, Butler said. Brown has Miami, Kansas State, Oregon, Southern California and Tennessee still on his list.

"God is in total control of this," Brown said. "I'm just praying about it. I know that where ever I end up it will be his will."

I don't think his competition is top notch but that is almost irrelevant when you see the way this guy makes ppl miss.

Help me understand this VN; Isn't this Butler guy who poses as BB's "manager" the same thing as an agent? If so, isn't that completely against everything the NCAA holds dear (besides making money). Then to hear that Butler has ties to Oku as stated in a previous thread really concerns me of the implications here. That being said, if it all seems on the level, having the #1 recruit in the nation on campus can only help us, having him sign would catapult this fan base to an entirely new level IMHO. Have we ever signed the #1 recruit? What was Peyton ranked?

he is a mentor lik a father figure not a agent he has no connection with agents... this kid has done nothing wrong he didnt want to rush things so he decided to pull a pryor and wait to sign is pryor a bad kid b/c of it turned out well for osu... you guys are being ridiclous saying you dont want this kid oku seems more like a head case then brown but no one complained when we got him...i think you are setting it yourselves uo if we dont get him you wont get hurt which is sad
