Bruce Pearl=Steve Spurrier?

Absolutely. If UT hadn't commited to building a practice facility, Bruce would be residing in Iowa City now.
Maybe...but that didn't really answer my question. I said can you picture him making threats (as Spurrier did publically)? And I still don't see him doing that. He has such a high esteem for the image of the university that I believe he would have handled things privately instead of through the media. JMO

It's hard for anyone to picture because it hasn't happened.

I agree with that. Then, if he didn't get what he wanted, he'd do what any coach with leverage does. He'd take his case to the public.

Yup. I'm just glad Mike has complied with each and every one of his requests thus far. Hopefully Al Skinner doesn't get supplanted (or retires) anytime soon.

You don't have to threaten when you get everything you are promised.

I assume Pearl has always gotten everything he's wanted because I have never read one story about him "taking it to the public" here or any of his prior jobs. I guess that just shows that he's been appreciated everywhere he's been.

I think Mike knows that it's his job to make Bruce happy, because if he goes, the Big Orange Nation will NOT be happy.

He was very vocal when he got to Milwaukee about the need to upgrade facilities.

I don't think being vocal about a need is the same thing as threatening to leave. He's been vocal about his needs here and he has raised a ton of money for it.

If the threat of leaving isn't implied when a coach raises issues about facilities, what leverage does he have?

I think a coach raising issues about facilities is often done to drum up more money from donors. I wouldn't necessarily agree that it's always an implied threat of leaving.

If donors don't see the possibility of a coach bolting, why bother to open up their wallets?

Green and Peterson both mentioned the necessity of a practice facility. Neither could get the money raised. Why? Nobody gave a damn if they left.

Nobody did give a damn if they left.

They couldn't raise the money because they weren't the salesman Pearl is and nobody thought they could win consistently.

You think Memphis, an athletic department swimming in red ink, really wanted to give its assistant basketball coaches huge raises last year? No, they did it because they feared Cal would move on to Raleigh if they didn't.

I don't know hat. I just find it hard to believe that most would be concerned with him leaving so soon. That may factor into their opinion but I think most are just excited about Tennessee basketball for the first time in a very long time.

I look at it this way. Billy Donovan just recently signed a long term contract with Florida. Are we to think that if he comes asking for facility upgrades that he is threatening to leave?

I'm sure that's true and that would be an example of a coach using the threat of leaving to his advantage. Again, I just don't believe that every time a coach asks for something he is threatening to leave. You don't think it could be that the coach asks for something because he believes he needs it, whatever it might be, to win?
