No matter how good of a coach he actually was, UT can not let him destroy the program and reputation of the university to try to keep him. Unbelievable that folks can't understand this. No one at UT wanted him to create this situation and no one wanted to let him go. They simply had no choice under the circumstances.
Just got home and saw the news. I was hoping that he would take the high road and resign. But no such luck. Pearl did a lot for UT basketball, but also brought a distasteful situation to the school. I never thought he would lie. Definitely time to move on. The players didn't deserve this.
Thank you. Pearl fans are not Vol fans necessarily. Otherwise they would be more concerned for the best interests of the university in light of how Pearl s*** in his nest here at UT.
Your going to give me one stat as to why he wasnt a all-time coach at UT? You cant just look at winning percentage you have to look at accomplishments. There are a lot of variables that go into that stat like what were those other coaches strength of schedule because Pearl always had a top strength of schedule. I don't know maybe those coaches never played hard schedules. Stats lie my friend but accomplishments don't. Fact is he's been to an elite 8! which I might add no one else has done at Tennessee. He also beaten a couple number one teams and got Tennessee to be ranked at number one. He also has more consecutive tournament appearances than anyone. Who else is done that? If you cant look at all that he has accomplished in a short period of time at UT and appreciate that then you are blind my friend.

Don't be so literal. My 76 year old grandfather (life long UT bball fan) said that Bruce was once in a lifetime for UT, I hate Duke but Coach K is a basketball god. 900 wins, Olympic Gold Medal, 2 time World Champ coach, 4 NCs and 11 Final Fours. I've agreed with most of the stuff you've said today but this one was a bit asinine.
Got some news for you: During the time of UT's best basketball teams, the NCAA invited 16 and then 32 to its tournament. At least four of Pearl's teams WOULD NOT HAVE MADE THE FIELD from the late 60s to the mid 70s. At least two of Pearl's teams WOULD NOT HAVE MADE THE FIELD, when it was expanded to 48 teams in 1979.
It's utterly ridiculous to claim Pearl was a once in a lifetime coach. He hasn 't had one single player that would have started on the 1976 or 1977 teams
I really don't know why Green is brought up about successful coaches at UT. No one cared when he left (hyperbole-very few). And no one was there to swope him as as their coach when he left. Anyone using him as a definition of a suceesful coach looses me at that point. His teams really reminded me of this 2011 team-lots of talent playing (as Harris so eloquently put it) with no heart.
In all honesty, I don't consider Green's successful, I don't care what his record was. His contibution to the history and legacy of UT basketball is minimal, at best. That's the point, if Jerry Green can win at UT, it's not going to impossible to find a quality replacement. It's not hard to be successful at UT if you're a half competent coach. Sadly, Dickey hired some very incompetent coaches, so most fans think those are the only ones out there.
