One of those candidates, multiple sources tell FootballScoop, was Louisville defensive coordinator Bryan Brown.
Sources tell FootballScoop Brown was potentially the focus of the search; however, sources told FootballScoop throughout the day Wednesday and into Thursday morning that Brown, who’s risen to prominence as a Scott Satterfield protege, was highly likely to remain at Louisville.

Multiple sources told FootballScoop that Southern Cal defensive coordinator Todd Orlando had at least been a person of interest in the Volunteers’ defensive coordinator search, but, again, sources indicated on Wednesday that Orlando was widely expected to remain as the Trojans’ defensive play-caller.

Just like with HC, coordinators struggle with NCAA sanctions. It will be just as hard to pull top coordinators (maybe harder).

Brown has turned things around at Louisville. Their D is looking better than three years ago when he got there.

Buzz surrounding Matt House as a potential DC. Currently the LB coach for the Chiefs and former DC at Kentucky. Coached Aaron Donald at Pitt.

On the other side of the field for the Super Bowl, how about former Vol Kacy Rodgers. He is the DL coach for the Bucs, but when Todd Bowles was the HC for the Jets, Rodgers was his DC. He has college experience and was an assistant at Arkansas, so he has SEC experience.

I am not sure if it was this article or another one, but the point was that Steele's style does not mesh will with Heupel's offense. Steel is a more of a "bend but don't break" defense that will cause it to be on the field a lot considering the offense. What Heupel wants is a very aggressive gamble defense to generate extra possessions for his offense. If they give up a quick score because of it the offense gets back on the field and the defense does not have to continue to labor throughout the game. Makes sense to me now that it was explained to me, so for Steele to be here he may have to change his stripes and the way he coaches defense.

From his perspective he is sitting on two (2) unpaid contracts and he has millions of reason not to compromise his philosophy or how he coaches. It may be as simple as that the style of play is not complementary to each other.

Unique perspective, and if true there is no reason to retain him.

Sources say, just means they are guessing so they have something to write about to get clicks. Last week Steele was gone, but he isn't.

Per coach the staff will be in place by Monday, which means he has a DC and they are working on their staff. There isn't any chance he makes that statement and doesn't have a DC.
