Bring back the Beer Barrel

I have to admit - I miss the beer barrel tradition. Maybe that is why our boys didn't win last year - there wasn't a "prize" at the end of the game ;-)

The "prize" would have been a Bowl Trip, and a chance at a winning record. :ermm:

Let's wait til 2011..... I'd hate to bring it back this year and then lose it right away...... Seriously though, I would like to see it make a return along with a few other Tennessee traditions that have gone by the wayside. I'd like to see the Tennessee Walking horse come back on a permanent basis!! Animal rights wack-o's can bite me.

Agreed, as an animal rights wack-0 I'll gladly bite you in a location of my choosing.

Alternatively, I will agree the Tennessee Walking horse make a come back as long as the same training tactics used on the horses is used on you for the same length of time it takes to train them. And done by no less than a long time trainer who knows how to apply the techniques. Then put you in a show for our amusement as those horses are. :neener2:

Won't ever happen because some UK students died in a drunk driving incident after the game one year.

Hell the barrel is still at Neyland - why don't they just wheel it out before the game this year? I have full confidence they'll just wheel it below again after the game anyway.

I'm sure you have the same attitude towards humans who aren't friends or family of yours. Mistreatment, even torture and various abuses is OK with you as long as it's them and not you. You're probably the same guy who saw the wrecked car on I-40 near Barstow, CA with a crying baby hanging by one leg out a window. Guy stopped took a picture and drove off. That was you for sure. I got it, seen a lot of it, thanks for reminding me the world has people like you. Top of the food chain and all that.

As for return of the Beer barrel, it's not a bad idea. College kids have been killing themselves for centuries. banning a barrel won't change that. Hope a lack of empathy for a fellow's tragedy will change. There's a difference.

There has to be some seldomly uttered name given to one who could see a baby in distress, simply take a picture, then move on. That's pretty low, even for the 21st Century. If there is no name yet given for filth like that, there should be.

I just have a few questions for you and in no way do I mean any disrespect what so ever.

Can you really compare a guy that was probably clueless about what was going.g on with the horse to a sick minded freak that would take a pic like that?

I believe that torturing animals is wrong but I also believe that some of you animal rights guys are radicals. Putting an animal on the same level as your family or a friend.

So your on a boat and it goes down with one of your family members your best friend and your dog your In a position to save two of the three which two you gonna pull to safety?

Your analogy is flawed. There's no relation at all between choosing whether to save a family member or dog and knowingly torturing an animal. The guy was saying that since the Walking Horse is just a horse, my and animal rights people were being silly to care about how the horses are treated. My response was targeting his coldly uncaring attitude. I'm sure opting to save my family member doesn't mean I didn't care for the drowning dog. But the OP on the other hand illustrates truly incapability to care about an animal being deliberately tortured for the sake of amusement performances. There's a difference.

Much amusement is derived from the intentional torture inflicted upon, or incidental suffering experienced by human beings, along with animals. Been that way for a very long time. However, that doesn't make the subjects of your statements unworthy of sympathetic sentiment, or even actions. But its kind of hard to spare concern for one life, when you risk being overwhelmed. At least, I think thats the case for a lot of people. What seems to be callousness can just be protection against empathetic suffering.

The reason they stopped using it was reasonable. I would say the trinket was fun, but we can live without it. I don't think you want to risk hurting the feelings of the families invoved with that - unimaginably terrible what they had to go through.

Call it a 'ice water' barrel as if Prohibition was still in effect.

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

I agree 100%. While we are at it I think we should have a musket and (Navy style) canon trophy for the Vandy game since we have us a rivalry again. Maybe that's not the best combo, but something to go along with our histories. On top of that I'd like one for the Bama series of a humidor complete with faux Cubans.
