Bring back the Beer Barrel

Taking it away is a classic example of the PC safe space pussification the country is being subjected to.

Really dude?

They took it away because two or three players died in a drunk driving accident like the night before the game.

No one was offended or complained abourt anything, nor did anyone protest, sue, or claim offensiveness; the schools just got together after the news of what happened and both had felt using it then would be in poor taste.

I want it back as much as the others, but you seem to have the wrong reasons applied here as far as what happened.

A school that discouraged saying Merry Christmas and encouraged people to say hyr and xyr will never bring back such an offensive relic.

It was an appropriate gesture more than a decade before that. Kentucky players died in an alcohol related accident. Thing was a clunky rubber stamped Vols scoreboard...not an issue.

So if a football player dies from choking on a bag of Tostitos, then we should find another sponser for the Fiesta Bowl?

No...the bowl trophy should have a football player getting the Heimlich...MVP should depict someone braindead on a ventilator.

While you are at it, bring back the Volunteer logo (dude with the coonskin hat and the rifle) and more meaningful Girls of threads.

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

It's a barrel. It hasn't had beer in it for something like 90 years. I don't agree with Count often, but I do on this. Doing away with the barrel hasn't caused anyone to drink more or less beer than they already do.

However, I would like to get the opinion of some UK fans as well.

Going to be unpopular, but as a parent, we can come up with a better name considering the KY players incident. Let it rest, PLEASE!

This is such a dumb argument to me. What parent would blame a barrel having the word "beer" attached to it because their kids drank and drove 16 years ago.

Nobody important even missed it after it was gone. :boredom:

They could have not recognized it that year and simply brought it back... I get why they did away with it.

Damn am i that old ? He gone too ? That is a classic volunteer.....don't tell me some dumdf^#k organization found that offensive. Be dealing with some copyright infringement laws over Davy and his hat now. My favorite all time logo until we begin galactic travel and take these Vols to Orion with our cyber players and their fiber optic uniforms....:eek:lol:

Of coarse they found him offensive, he's carrying a gun! We all know that frightens the PC crowd.

play for the cracker barrel and you have an easy sell to a AAA sponsor. perfect for modern college sports. it's all about the green.

Serious question: Assuming there were enough fans from both teams who wanted to bring this back, how would they/we go about starting a serious discussion with the schools administration?

This may have already been mentioned on here but I don't want to comb through all 11 pages....but does anyone know where the beer barrel actually is right now? I assume it was not destroyed but according to Wikipedia, its whereabouts have mot been revealed since the late 90s. I picture it being somewhere deep within the cavernous spaces below Neyland.

It reinforces a stereotype of football players, and college life in general, that I'm sure the administration doesn't cate for, especially after the title 9 debacle. It's sad that it went away. But, it's best to let it go at this point. It isn't coming back.

It's beyond time to bring it back. Suspending it when they did was fine, but it has been long enough. Add a plaque with their names or something but when Kentucky can sell bottles of Makers Mark with various UK stuff on em every year they can no longer say they don't support the alcohol side of the Beer Barrel. As of a couple years ago Tennessee still had it in storage in the football complex. Roll it out, clean it off, and play for the thing.

Don't waste your time the liberals at each University would never allow it because it represents under age drinking, as many college students aren't of legal drink age.

The best way to bring it back is to call it the ROOT BEER BARREL!
