Bring back Phil!

:clapping::clapping:What a piece of garbage this thread is. I would still hire him as a consultant. That's very different from being on the staff. I still think the OL coach is not right for the job and look for CBJ to pink slip him after the bowl.

Please do, noone else will; you might get him cheap, just give him a HC title.

Yeah, I don't know why I would use wins and losses to judge overall success in a sport.

The debate is pointless, years later the large majority have the same opinions that had then.

I agree his time was over but will never make the claims of him being horrible as some do.
History will be the judge in the end and it is my guess that the overall body of work (his percentages), will put him in a favorable light with the majoriy of those with an unbiased outlook.

Overall, I agree with you. My beef is that he sat on his laurels those last few years, did not put forth the effort to maintain or improve the program and his "run out the clock" philosophy finally caught up to him. That's the beef I have with Fulmer.

Why give him the opportunity to use the same knive on Butch that he used on Johnny?
Go back and look at majors last few years. That 1990 team was better than any team we have had since and he lost 9 / 6 to a Bama team that was not very good. Then 1992 season Johnny cost us a real shot at the SEC and maybe more. He was past his prime. Ask the folks at Pitt his second time around. CPF was the rt guy at the rt time. He won 100 games more than he lost. Much better than Majors ever was. He took over a team he helped build. He is a true TENNESSEE guy and a HOF coach.

I am absolutely addicted to VN. Especially love reading all the posts on Sunday from Saturday night. All of you missed your true calling as comedians. Well, most of you.

GBO!!!

Please just stop! He's gone. Good riddance. If he had done his job up til the end, we probably wouldn't have had the drop off in talent and sunk so low as a program. No use repeating past mistakes. Don't know if CBJ will ultimately win enough to keep our fickle fanbase happy, but at least he can recruit lights out and I can watch him be interviewed without wanting to throw a shoe at the TV.

Major rebuilt the team to a national powerhouse which it was when he was fired and Fulmer took over. Fulmer left a mediocre program when he was fired, 29 -22 his last 4 years, with some very embarrassing losses.
Fulmer did build on Majors success and took the program to the top and won a NC, then something happened. It was as if he had reached his goal and he did let the program slide into mediocristy. There is zero argument to that, it is a fact that some do not want to accept.

I think Fulmer gave into Hamiltons need for money to build facilities and I understand that need. During the years after the NC, Fulmer seemed to be preocupied with recruiting players with parents with big money to donate. Aslong as parents donated, players played, no matter thier effectiveness.

This strategy did not nose dive the program but it definitely was slipping down the slope to mediocrity.

I blame Hamilton mostly, but CPF shoulders a lot of the blame also.
I wanted Hamilton gone and keep CPF.
In CPF's last year, the writing on the wall was clear to me, CPF had to go first to get Hamilton out of here.

JMO

He did. He introduced an entire keyboard and mouse.
Now you can choose which threads you read :)

Guilty! You caught me!
I must admit I DO enjoy reading the latest dumber than dirt sheep discussions on Philmur, Gruden and firing of the latest coach.
Just cant pass up watching a train wreck! :hi:

I think Phil might come back as OL coach for a couple of years then AD. I'd love to see Phil as AD. He will be one day

Dude of course it won't happen. And Butch isn't reading any of your posts seeking helpful tips either. It's a f***ing message board. The whole point is to discuss thoughts, opinions, and BS around with other Vol fans.

Loosen up

So maybe we should start threads like this with "partial sarcasm" so you won't get so upset?

For OL coach! He hasn't taken another HC position because he loves TN and nowhere else.

We could use his OL knowledge and what OL recruit wouldn't want to play for Phillip Fulmer?

Most idiotic comment I have ever seen on this board, a board populated by persons of modest academic aspirations.

I'd love to see him back in some behind the scenes capacity, but I think the reason he hasn't taken another HC position is because he's loving the hell out of "retirement", as he should. It's got nothing to do with holding out until UT may or may not offer him another job someday.

And I do realize his "retirement" involves actually working in some capacity at ETSU. But being a consultant for ETSU is retirement compared to HC of an SEC team.

I would love to see him as Tennessee's OL coach. However, I don't believe he would demote himself. But just think about his recruiting connection/skills plus being a great OL coach/mentor. Would be a win/win. However, I don't see it ever happening :(
