Brian Kelly to LSU

This could shift the balance in the SEC West. I think he will struggle getting love from the fan base unless he wins immediately. My prediction is 5 years and gone with a mediocre W/L record.

That goes for anyone at LSU. They pretty much adopted his weirdness until he started losing. They loved it.
Maybe some of them loved it. But I have lived in Baton Rouge since '83, have one degree from LSU, so I guess they're my "other" team, but I never loved his contrived poser grass-nibbling or his mealy-mouthed evasive non-answers at press conferences. In fact, I never had any use for Miles at all, but maybe that's the Tennesseean in me.

I’m not gonna argue if he’s a good coach or not but I’ll argue he seems like a really odd fit at LSU. No offense to any northerners here but he just wreaks of “yankee” and it doesn’t get much more southern than LSU. That’s not a knock on Yankees. Just an odd fit in my eyes.

I think it is a potentially disastrous hire. Good coach, alright, but total misfit in the LSU/Cajun culture. At age 60, how will he relate to the young southern AA athletes? They are from different planets.

I don’t think so. Hard to determine either way. Ole Miss would smoke Notre Dame this year for what it’s worth

I doubt they would beat Notre Dame at all this year. All I know is Kelly has won huge at every stop, Lane has been fired twice. Lane coached at USC with 30 NFL players on the roster and got himself fired. Kelly just left one national championship contender for another with one of the biggest contracts for a coach in the history of football. Their career arc is very different regarding success and advancement.

Nick Saban and Les Miles are Ohio/Michigan people. "Yankee" to the core. They both recruited lights out and won the NC at LSU. Ogreon crawled out of the swamp to coach and got fired 2 years after a title. Winning is the only fit that matters and it's all Kelly has ever done at every stop he's ever made.

You’re not wrong but this seems different to me.

Lane has been fired by an idiot owner and by a school that has probably regretted it ever since. You obviously think a lot higher of Notre Dame than I do. It seems that they mostly beat up on inferior teams and crumble against quality opposition. I’m not sure Notre Dame played anyone this season that was substantially better than Kentucky. Most of their recent seasons have been like that save for Clemson. Lane Kiffins wins against A@M and Arkansas are more impressive than anything Kelly has won in several seasons. Find a credible power ranking system and I expect Ole Miss would be 4 to 6 point favorites vs ND on a neutral field.

al-Baghdadi would be embraced at LSU (or any big football school) if he was winning. It's all that matters.

Being a good "cultural fit" can perhaps give you a longer leash. Take a look at Joe Moorhead - Yankee who came from Penn St to Starkville with no SEC experience and they fired him after a good debut season, mediocre second season (even though he did win 2 Egg Bowls). They are showing way more patience with Leach, who actually has a worse record than Moorhead did through 2 seasons and hasn't beaten Ole Miss yet.

But then again Coach O was LSU to the core and they ran his ass out of town on a rail 2 years after going undefeated, winning a national title, and having a Heisman winner.

Lane was fired at Oakland because he sucked there. Davis also said he was an untrustworthy liar. Davis was right. He was fired at USC because he sucked there. He was handed a ton of talent, he walked into more future NFL players than our 1998 team had, and he couldn't get it done. Kelly, in year 1 at ND, beat Kiffin and that loaded USC team head to head in Kiffin's first year. He went 2-1 vs Lane, with Lane getting fired before the 4th meeting, which Kelly won vs Ogreon.

Massey has a compilation of 83 different computer/human rankings. Ole Miss is behind Notre Dame in 81 of them. Ole Miss is 17th in the ESPN FEI, Notre Dame is 5th. I don't think you'd find many computers who would make Ole Miss a 4 to 6 point favorite.

Someday Lane may prove he's more than capable of occasionally having a good season, but he hasn't yet. Kelly has had many if them.

Except for his 4-8 in his 6th season at ND. And the two other seasons there when all the wins were vacated for cheating. And, sure, strictly speaking, the three 5-loss seasons there were "winning seasons."

When you go 8-5 you had a winning season. He's coached for 32 years and has 2 losing seasons in his career. He's won 10+ games 13 times in his career including 5 seasons in a row. Even with the wins taken away in the two years at ND, he is 263-96-2 in his career. So yes, it's all he's ever done at every stop and I seriously doubt he will suddenly run aground at LSU and start losing.

I guess we'll see.

Never coached in the SEC though.
