Has anyone looked at Cincy's recruiting classes the last couple of years. They're pathetic. Last year's recruiting class was ranked in the 60's behind teams like Duke.

This year, despite all their success, they have a class ranked 51st and are behind teams like Indiana, Baylor, and Washington State.

Kelly has them playing well, but is anyone else a little unsure of his ability to be the coach of a great team. I know Cincy isn't a great program, and I know that ND has far more prestige, but still, the numbers seem really low for an unbeaten, BCS school in Ohio. Their classes seem to be improving, but it seems like it is taking a little while. I noticed TCU has pretty low rankings well, but it's a little more understandable because they are a mid major.

I'm glad that UT hired Kiffin and not Kelly. Kelly may be good, but I'm not sold on his ability to recruit a team with talent on par with Alabama and Florida.

Take a look at Cincinnati's recruiting before he arrived and then take a look at each year since he's been there. It has been a slow but steady upward trend. He's only been getting widespread recognition for a couple years now. He'll be fine (recruiting-wise) at a big-time school.

I understand your argument, but the point is he's been getting wide-spread recognition and he's having trouble out recruiting Baylor. I understand that Cincy isn't a great program, but I tend to think that he's doing something wrong.

if you were a big recruit and actually wanted to stay in the midwest why in the world would you go to cinci over Ohio State, Michigan, or ND?

You could make that argument about a bunch of schools with better classes than Cincy.

He's an excellent coach playing in a very weak conference. Right now, I'd say several the top 2-4 teams from each Mid Major conference could compete or the Big East title.

Kelly's talent at Cincy wouldn't be enough to win a stronger BCS conference but it is comparable enough to the others in his conference to get the job done. WVU had the highest ranked class in the BE at 27. The rest fall in like this:

USF- 29
Rutgers- 38
Pitt- 47
UConn- 75
L'ville- 76
Syracuse- 117

Kelly's ability is in recognizing guys who he can develop and then developing them. That wouldn't be enough in the SEC, Pac10, or Big 12 but can win in the current BE.

How well? It can always pull in decent players, but I think you will always need a really good recruiter to get the top guys to compete for national titles.

Pike has been hurt. Last week was the first time I've watched a UC game all the way through, and his arm looked really weak. He can hit the open guys, but when his guys are covered, his passing ability looked terrible at best. He threw three picks because he made bad throws into coverage and put some air on those passes as well. He's no NC caliber quarterback.

I think that may be the problem with Kelly at Notre Dame. They are not going to want to wait a few years for Kelly to get moving on recruiting. They are going to want instant results. I think Kelly would be a good hire, but they are going to need to be patient. He also needs to bring a good D-coordinator with him.

Progress was slow because Cinici is historically a perennial doormat and recruits didn't know his name until this year. I think he'll be fine.

He's a hot up and coming coach. A proven consistent winner. At ND, he'll be able to compete for and land enough top-level talent to get that program back to going to BCS bowls -- provided he puts together a good defensive coaching staff. Charlie Weiss did fine with the offensive side of things, but you can't win consistently against quality opponents without a solid defense.

I think it just goes to show Recruiting rankings are crap. I never try and look too much into them. If we did, Notre Dame would have 10 more national championships.

I wouldn't go that far. Developing players is very important, but you have to get good guys in there first. Look at the past champions and I'd bet they had all brought in a lot of talent in the years before.

With their schedule, and the ND claus, that should not be too hard.

I guess Charlie don't think so, but.

Brian Kelly is a damn good coach. He gets 110% out of his mediocre roster. Its hard to assess his recruiting ability because he's at freakin Cincinnati. His recruiting ability will be determined over the next 2-3 years. However, his classes at Cincy were showing steady improvement. Winning sells itself.

It shows that coaches matter too, not just stars on Rivals.

Gilyard will be an NFL WR. They had a converted TE go in the second round, I believe, as a hybrid DE/LB last year.

You're right. Rivals isn't always right, that's for sure. I'm just saying I'm surprised programs like IU are recruiting at a similar level as Cincy. Cincy may have bad facilities and everything, but there are certainly other awful programs on their level.

Cincy's going to have to dump some money into the football program or Kelly will jump ship.

There's a lot of truth to that old saying: "Defense wins championships." Under Charlie Weiss, most of ND's highly rated recruits were offensive players. Under Weiss, ND did not have a good enough defense to successfully compete against better competition. Until ND puts a quality defense on the field, they will continue to struggle against good teams.

Yep. However Kelly wants to leave the program in better shape then when he got there.

His coaching has made that school a lot of money. He wants it put back in to the football program so it can be good without him there.
