I wouldn't argue Leach isn't a pretty good coach, just not sure that he and his system would go over well in Knoxville.

I used to be very anti-Leach. I'm warming up to him a bit, but still not sure if his system would provide sustainable success in the SEC. Given him a great D coordinator and a couple of top 10 recruiting classes... and maybe...

The fact that Kelly has a ranked team and won 10 games last year with such piss poor talent speaks highly of his coaching ability. He's not a sexy candidate, but it does appear that the guy gets more from less.

Tennessee is not in a position where we can be succssful by "getting more from less." If UT has less than UF, UGA, Alabama then we will stay in the middle of the pack in the SEC. Recruiting elite talent is imparitive.

I didn't say that. You inferred that I expected us to have less and therefore resign ourselves to getting more out of it. My point is that this guy's MO is stark contract to what we have had to swallow for 17 years, i.e. less from more.

I don't expect us to have less. Just imagine what an overachiever could do with typical Tennessee talent.

And I offer you the Pirate. I am not saying that I am sold on him completely, just that his system DID work in the SEC with less talent.

Yeah, I wasnt arguing with your point. I was just pointing out that to be successful in the environment UT is in right now we must get elite talent. I think getting more from less is a very important skill as a coach. If Kelly is capable to bring in "typical Tennessee talent" then I have no doubt that he can be successful at UT. I just dont know that I am convinced he will be capable of bringing in typical Tennessee talent.

I'm not sure that there is any hard evidence to suggest Kelly will not be able to recruit. To the contrary he seems to have steadily improved the recruiting at Cincinatti. He was usually around the middle of the MAC conference when recruiting at CMU.

So he was able to out-recruit half of the coaches in the MAC? Wonder how he will fare recruiting against Saban, Meyer, Richt, Miles, etc?

Agree. Definitely some unknowns... and he's not the sexy name that many in our fanbase want, self included to an extent.

I'm not pushing for the guy yet, but his success without talent is impressive.

Plus, dont you think that Pro-Style QBs would love to come to UT and throw for 400 yards a game?

Elite pro-style QB's wont want to come because they will not want the NFL scouts to label them a "system QB."

Yes, his offense worked. Its the other side of the ball where my key concerns lie... but if he were to pick up a Kevin Steele type DC, I would starting getting more excited the prospects for success.

Tim Couch didn't have an outstanding NFL career. He was more physically talented and successful than guys like Kingbury and Symons at TTU but he was as much a benefactor of the Leach offense as those two were. I'm fairly confident Leach could recruit a QB of equal quality than any of these 3 in his first recruiting season at UT

Has it helped him at Tech? No.

QB's that are serious about going to the NFL don't play for a guy that coached Kingsbury and Symons.

They should pay more for a Steele type DC than they are willing to pay Leach.

CUM doesn't have a QB recruiting problem and there is no way any of his qb's will play on Sundays.

I completely disagree. If you are good, then the NFL will find you.

Every system is good for a certain QB. The Arizona Cardinals throw the ball all over the place. Kurt Warner is perfect for this offense. Would he be good in the Titans offense? Probably not as successful.

He was only there for 3 years. 2 full recruiting seasons. CMU was a wreck of program. They had been recruiting at the basement of the MAC. Kelly inherited the 13th ranked recruiting class in the MAC and racked up the 6th best class in his first season..

MAC recruiting is hard to quantify anyway so i'll drop it :dunno:

You missed the point completely. The point was only that an 18-year old, elite pro-style QB is going to be advised that if he goes to a Leach-coached school then the NFL is going to (fairly or unfairly) label them as a "system QB." And there have been so many system QBs that have failed in the NFL that there will be a natural hesitation.

Yes, but this is not the MAC or the Big East, both of which are WEAK football conferences. In case no one threw this out there, this is the SEC!!!!! You absolutely HAVE to get top recruits (at least a few) every year if you want to be successful. Phillip Fulmer did not adhere to this formula and look where he is headed now.
