Brian Kelly (Cincinnati)

Is Brian Kelly a safer bet than Chris Peterson?

In my opinion, Peterson is the man...But I got a feeling he's going to compete for the Washington job..I really liike his style but after watching Kelly's team last night, I was very very impressed...What impressed me out of everything was how the offensive line played...They were knocking people off the ball so well and believe me, USF is no push over so yes I have to say that Kelly certainly belongs on the list...Kelly's team is lightening fast too.

Brian Kelly head coaching record:

Grand Valley State
1991: 9-3
1992: 8-3, Conference Co-Champs
1993: 6-3
1994: 8-4
1995: 8-3
1996: 8-3
1997: 9-2, Conference Co-Champs
1998: 9-3, Conference Champions
1999: 5-5
2000: 7-4
2001: 13-1, Conference Champions, only loss was in Div II NC game
2002: 14-0, Div. II National Champs
2003: 14-1, Div. II National Champs
Central Michigan
2004: 4-7
2005: 6-5
2006: 10-4, MAC Champions
Cincinnati
2007: 10-3
2008: 6-2, losses to Oklahoma and UCONN

He's had good success everywhere he's been. The SEC would be a relatively HUGE step up, but no doubt the guy's a winner.

Also, last year was Cincinnati's first 10-win season since 1951, and their first 9-win season since 1976. Brian Kelly's first game as head coach at Cincinnati was the 2006 International Bowl, a 27-24 win over Western Michigan.

I don't know if he runs a full spread offense though. He does incorporate it, but if you look at how they iced the game last night it was using some good ol' fashion run it right at you football. I think he can coach both and his record everywhere he has been does speak for itself.

Do we actually think ol Hammy would give him a call? Is there any reason to believe other than coaching in the SEC that he would come here

It took him 10 years to get Grand Valley State to an elite level. Lots of 8-9 win seasons before he took the next step. Not sure if that is an indictment one way or another. But I would have liked to see him, at the D-II level, to not take 10 years to take that step. And then one good season out of 3 at Central Michigan. I am not saying that he is not a good coach. Obviously there is more to the story than just the record. But for all these people that look at just the wins and loses of potential hires, he is not stellar in their eyes.

I think a lot of us like him because he has demonstrated that he can steadily improve teams because Central Michigan and Cincinnati were mediocre schools before he got there. Also, steady improvement is WAAAAAYYYYY better than steady decline.

Seems like I remember hearing that about Clawson too. And Buzz Peterson.

And some guy named Urban Meyer in Utah. I remember all that talk..."his offense won't do anything in the SEC. The speed of the defenses will shut it down." How did that one turn out?

IIRC Peterson (sp?) didn't even want the BSU HC job, he had to be begged and pleaded with by admin to take it. He wanted to stay a coordinator.

According to the DC's in college football, Kelly's spread offense is one of the hardest to defend and prepare for. Like i said in my earlier post i think he would be great...and remember as far as recruiting goes 10C is the gateway to the south, being centrally located really helps.

Kelly's offense does look very hard to defend...He uses a lot of speed much the same way florida uses it.

I'll continue to be on this guys bandwagon. UC is currently down to their 3rd string qb and still challenging for the Big East title. They just beat West Virginia in Morgantown. I'm 100% sure that he has less talent to work with and equally as sure that WVU would roll us by at least 2 touchdowns.

I'm surprised his name has not been mentioned more than it has.
