Bret Smith/NFL Combine

I got this PM from a guy on a non-sports message board I frequent. The guy who sent it to me works at the location of the NFL Combine HQ in Indy somewhere. He gets to see all of the guys and bs with them here and there.

I just copy and pasted his PM:
Bret Smith just showed up today (a day late). He came in here dragging ass and looked like the LEAST motivated of anyone I've seen. Do you know anything about this kid? He DID say he wasn't feeling well, but he looked like he didn't belong here. At least that's most peoples first impression. The knuckles on his right hand were all scuffed up too. No skin on them. He looked rough.

Any idea what that is about?

What he had to say about Aaron and Robert:
Sears came in yesterday. Didn't say much, but there really wasn't a chance. It was pretty busy when he came in. Today I saw him walking around with some other linemen. Seemed to be having a good time.

Meachum showed up at the same time as Calvin Johnson, Duane Jarrett, Sidney Rice and a few others. They were all laughin and stuff. I just complimented him on his season and wished him luck. He was pretty happy about that. He was surprised i recognized him without telling me his name first.

He also snapped a cell phone picture of JR (the guy is huge!...and yes, I already knew this) :

Sears only did 21 bench press reps. Not good, especially when you compare it to the two guys he's competing with as the top OG, Ben Grubbs (29 reps) and Justin Blalock (40 reps).

Tackle usually has better bench press than guard. Sears plays a lot of Tackle, but is projected as guard, I figure out is should be hard for him to compete with those typical OG in bench press.

Brady Quinn did more than Sears? :banghead2:

Bench press is insanely overrated as a measure of strength, even at the NFL level.

For PROPER blocking tecnhique, tricep and anterior deltoid strength is immensely more important than pectoral strength. Of course, finding someone to teach an NFL offensive lineman how to block properly hardly seems to be a priority for many teams. I can't stand to watch the NFL for that reason....zone block left and zone block right. On a pass, don't even bother getting into a three-point stance or lining up on the LOS.

My high school coach always said the guy with the stronger squat could push the guy with the stronger bench press all over the football field.

i am curious what an allpro offensive lineman like randy cross routinely benched in his heyday.

I thought Sears was little overrated to begin with but I'm surprised at his combine. He did 21 reps in the bench press when several leaders in his class did the max 40. He also didn't show up with any of the leaders in the 40 yd dash or broad jump. Seems like a disappointing combine. I wonder where he will end up in the draft?

He did not run or do positional drills due to the injury he sustained in the Senior Bowl practices. That's why he doesn't show up for those.

that's awesome they compared Robert Meachem's talent to Terrel Owens..
The same talent with a better attitude.. :peace2:

i can't stand TO. they should ban him from the NFL forever

Yeah... he doesn't deserve to play with model citizens like Jamal Lewis, Ray Lewis, Pacman, Chris Henry, or Leonard Little.

Terrell Owens is a cancer and simply has no place in the NFL (even though he hasn't broken any laws, killed anyone, been involved in any crimes, etc)
