How does Bret Smith let this happen? He is a SR. and should know better. He let himself down and his team down by not taking care of classwork. Hope that D average helps him cook fries.

I say let's get Josh Briscoe, Slick Shelly, and Quinton Hancock going. Hancock is from Florida, so you know he has speed as a wideout. Let's make a call to Memphis and see if they would like to have Lucas Taylor.

I wouldn't give up on Lucas Taylor so easily. When I saw a scrimmage before the 2005 season, he was easily the most impressive wideout we had. He torched our secondary several times. Seriously, every time he touched the ball it was going to be at least a thirty yard gain. He's a little shifty guy and I think he can be a Steve Smith-type player if he gets coached up and a proper gameplan is implemented for him.

He should have taken priorities 101 at UT first and foremost.

People are writing off a lot of underclassmen who haven't had enough PT to impress us peons.

Give them a chance ... they're sophomores and what not.

That's the way it always goes. Some people always think that nobody will ever be able to play the position again.

this isn't great news, but i don't think its doomsday either. we've still got meach and swain, and one of the other guys will step it up and fill in the third slot. i'm not sure which one will step it up, but one of them will.

Shouldn't Trooper have known how his players were doing in the classroom..and made sure he had tutoring and did evrything he needed, to remain eligible..

Just a thought...

Pinning a failing grade on a football coach is worse than suggesting that a position coach receive a half million dollar raise.

what exactly does the player development role that trooper has mean? does that mean he's supposed to keep track of the players development in the classroom as well? I know someone is supposed to be in charge of that, and I don't know any other titles that anyone else has that would make it seem like it would be them.

That being said, who is to say that Trooper didn't have all the needed tutors and all the possible help Smith needed and Smith still just tried to coast through his classes and never really worked at it. Ultimately the blame rests solely on Smith no matter what

???

i think it's a legit question. Trooper's title includes "player development". i want to know what that means. in every athletic dept, certain people are assigned duties keeping up w/ the players' performance in the classroom. i'm asking if that person is trooper.

plaeyer development would be development as a player. his title is not student development or academical development.

It would depend on what class it was. Don Carlson, and Kay Shanahan, are the academic counselors, and Georgia Caven is the program coordinator for the writing center.

Not sure what role Trooper takes in academics, I would think he would keep of with the grades of the players he coaches, to ensure eligibility.

not trying to start an argument here, but there has to be more than that. no other coach gets "player development" as an official title. every coach is responsible for developing his specific players as players. what does trooper do specifically to earn that title that no one else does?

you're right, I forgot about Carlson. I personally thought Shanahan was only over track, cross country, and tennis, but maybe she helps, i dunno.

You guys blaming Trooper for Bret Smith not making his grade are hilarious. At what point does a kid take responsibility for his own actions? You sound like the other SEC fans calling us UThug. Fulmer can't police the players 24/7, and they are the ones doing the nonsense. At some point, you are responsible for your actions, be it smoking hippie lettuce, brawling in bars, waving toy guns at cops, or studying and making the grades needed. Is it Trooper's fault if he doesn't graduate? Is it Trooper's fault if he fails an exam? Fricking hilarious.

good this is the way it should be.. he's gotta do better than that and this is rediculous a senior wont play in his last game because of a bad grade.. give me a break i have no sympathy for him

Kudos to the administration and staff for drawing a line, instances such as this cannot be tolerated, and with the mindset of athletes are today, if you give an inch, they'll take a mile...Lets see what Slick or Josh can do, lets give em hell in the morning Orange!!!

I am sure bret feels bad enough without fair weather fans saying mean things! I am sure this is a lesson learned, and I doubt he will be cooking fries anytime soon.BUT there is nothing wrong with that either....you have to do what you gotta do!!!!
