Brent Vinson is gone.

He wasn't that good anyway......Isn't that what we always say when we lose someone(a player, a recruit, potential coach)?

Only if we were giving them all kinds of props and saying we just had to have them when we thought we were going to get them.

the rules are there for a reason...I think the original question was, is it the previous coaching staff's fault or the player's? I think CPF and Co. were a little too lax on some players but towed the line with others. This is a case where Vinson was given the right amount of chances...I'm curious as to why he was kicked off now. What did he do NOW to deserve the dismissal?

It is a big loss, He was a probable starter at Corner. Big waste of talent as he had NFL potential.[/QUOTE]

And you base this on what ?

He came in with all-star expectations but showed nothing, he has done absolutely nothing to lead someone to believe he could play in the NFL.

Whatever rules it takes to make more scholarships available for the fall should work fine between now and NSD.

Asking student-athletes to "stay out of trouble" and asking them to adhere to a set of arbitrary standards which are completely at odds from the student body of which they are ostensibly members are two hugely separate things.

You really might as well advocate having the football team live off-campus and take correspondence courses. Heck, why even have them live in Knoxville? They could train in Morristown and drive in for the games.

Since when did requiring student-athletes to obey not only state law but campus policy somehow get morphed into a, "set of arbitrary standards"?! Your statement is itself, arbitrary.

So, you're saying that it's draconian for the university to hold the student-athlete to such a standard, while knowing that the illegal activity is rampant throughout the other members of the student body? Well, then, you seem to have a much more pervasive problem with your "student-body", than the rules imposed on the conduct and actions of the student/athletes.

No matter how many times the "two-wrongs-make-a-right" argument is raised, nor how badly you want it to be true - it's not. If a million people violate the law, the next person to do so is just as guilty of the offense as the first. Your argument predicates that the pervasiveness of the problem (which the law was intended to correct, by the way) suggests that the law should be ignored.

Using that logic:

1. Of 1,000 people who don't fully stop at stop signs, only about 3-5 are actually caught and cited. I guess we should take all of the stop signs down.

2. Think of the thousands of people who cheat on their taxes each year and only a fractional amount of them get audited, and subsequently, caught. I guess we should just admit that because so many others cheat on their taxes, its unreasonable to expect others not to do the same, and they shouldn't be punished.

Do you agree with those things, too, or do you only attempt to rationalize illegal activity when it comes to the consumption / use of alcohol by underage college students?

The fact remains:
Underage drinking is illegal, and if consumed on campus, against the Universities own internal policies.

As such, I believe that it is not only reasonable - but necessary - to expect a student-athlete to abstain from violating either of them, regardless as to whoever or how many others may choose to do so.

Just my opinion, and likely, many will agree with you and think it wrong.

Vinson has apparently been cleared academically and is enrolled for spring. GVX article says if he finishes this spring with good grades he will be on the team next fall.

If he does remain on the team i hope he learns from this but his history would suggest otherwise.

they're grown @$$ men they need to take responsibility and realize the gift and talent they have. they shouldn't need someone to hold their hand and take them to class! this isn't grade school

Actually, they're not. There is a part of the brain, can't remember the name, that isn't fully developed until the early twenties. It is the part of the brain than deals with reasoning and judgement. Some mature faster than others and some don't. How do we know Vinson doesn't have a 85 IQ? Apparently, he isn't very bright. He had to attend a prep school just to get eligible to go to college and he attended AFTER his senior year of high school. If he has below average intellect, then it is the responsibility of his coaches to make sure he is spending most of his free time on academics. If they know his intellect and aren't doing this, they aren't doing their jobs

All I got to say is good riddance. You know what happens to people that eff up the way he has at my job? you can get send to the brig. Maybe this will set him straight, but probably not.

Two different things, DA. How many math tests are you taking on your job? When was the last time you had a term paper to write at work? When was the last time you had to complete a lab assignment for your next day at work?

Some people just aren't cut out for academics.

MAybe you came around, but would you have kicked Eli (if this was Ole Miss) or Peyton out of school when they were cited with underaged drinking back in the day? Eli got busted, but Peyton did it as well. Would you have wanted him gone if he had been cited for underaged drinking.

I love this post.. I'll go a step further, my guess is that 99.9% of UT football players have drank underage, and probably over 90% have smoked pot.... Those on here that say they are "grown men" and that they should know better and not waste their talent are ridiculous....

Glass houses... Fortunately, he is getting another chance. Lets hope for the best!

according to GVX he isnt gone yet. granted they are usually the last to report anything but he has supposedly saved himself for now.

It's funny that you said that. I remember reading the same thing not too long ago. Somehow, it's also the part of your brain that has to do with comprehending long term consequences of actions. So there is an actual medical reason that teenagers act like they'll live forever. (not joking)
