Breaking inside story about QB situation and Crompton

we would be 4-0 with an average QB

3-1 at the very worst. How anyone can blame CDC for anything is beyond me. When you have a QB that can't throw a simple 10yd pass without one-hopping it, it doesn't matter if he can read his progressions anyway. And based on CDC's recent experience and success, I am of the opinion that there's no way he's as incompetent as JC makes him (everyone) look. We really don't know what have in Clawson yet. It will be interesting to see if he gets the opportunity to show us. In the same breath, I'm also not sure you can count Clawson out of the HC picture if Fulmer doesn't return.

Yes there was. By most accounts, JC played well in practice and Clawson had every reason to believe he was just cold/nervous and would warm up as the game went along.

Clawson rightly recognized and tried to exploit the same weaknesses that BYU blistered UCLA with the next week. He rightly thought that what he saw in practice would translate into game ability... It didn't.

That makes zero sense. Saying Clawson "rightly thought" that would imply that Crompton actually played well in that game. Regardless, you don't make your new starter throw that many times in his first start on the road (not counting arkansas in 06) especially when. Crompton needs to be benched, but Clawson deserves blame for that one for the play calling in that game

I think he's saying that CDC naturally assumed his QB would play in a similar fashion to what he had seen in practice.

If that was the case he might just have kept him throwing to get over what he thought (at the time) was 1st game jitters. (not to mention trying to stick to what may have been a solid gameplan)

The thing that gets me is Phil never outwardly shows this side of his ego, the one that seems to control everything in the program.

It somehow does not seem that obvious to me that he is not letting Clawson do his job, or it is hidden quite well....but if true, then I think the program will propel itself forward once he steps down.

Would it be obvious that he is not letting Clawson do his job if he (Fulmer) changes the play called by the OC 30% of the time?

Proof?

>>What's wrong? Just about everything. Starter Jonathan Crompton isn't seeing the field, makes crucial turnovers and appears anything but poised. The miscues come at the worst possible times and he's missed wide-open receivers multiple times.
>>How can it be fixed? Shake things up because it can't get much worse. Backup quarterback Nick Stephens is being given the chance to win the starting job. If Stephens earns it, UT should couple that with the G-Gun package, which puts playmaker Gerald Jones at quarterback occasionally. Fulmer said he would grade Crompton and Stephens during practice this week then name the starter. It shouldn't have to take that long. The way Crompton has graded out through four games is all the proof Fulmer should need.

Why is the head coach naming the starter and not the OC who is supposed to have autonomy?

Why is the head coach naming the starter and not the OC who is supposed to have autonomy?

Because Fulmer has proved to be great at making these personnel decisions. He knew to not give Jamal significant carries until after the UF game in '97. He knew Sgt. Joey Matthews was the man for the job vs Southern Miss that one game. He realizes Stocker may drop 3 passes, but he still deserves more of a chance than a freshman AA. He recognizes that when Montario Hardesty tears it up in the first half, the only logical thing to do is bench him in the second. He's just plain good at it, okay?

The Warren-Stocker thing is getting overplayed and its getting tiring reading about it over and over. He only knows the plays for a certain number of packages and they are passing packages because he is not a good run blocker. Our QB has been so horrible we have not been able to use those packages very much. We have been in running situations most of the time and Stocker is far superior run blocker. I sense that if Stephens plays and looks like the answer at QB then we will see much more of Warren. People take this "he as a freshman AA" crap too far. Do you have any idea how long he went without playing (or shoot, even practicing) football after his freshman season at FSU? You think there is not an adjustment period. How much did you see him play at FSU? He was not asked to block. And his recieving numbers were not astronomical. Once he learns more of the playbook and we have a QB that can complete a pass his role will expand.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is my first post so bare with me.

My take on this whole situation is this: I agree with earlier posts about how Crompton rode the pine and then earned/deserved his chance as starting QB. His performance against LSU last year proved that. But when a QB or any other player for that matter, gets into a game and does not/cannot perform you pull them out and see if someone else can do it. The fact that CPF stands behind him was admirable even after the debacle at UCLA. But to continue to stand behind him and make excuses for him continuouly after 4 miserable games is not only detrimental to the perceptions of his ability to coach, but to the team and the Universtiy of Tennessee in whole.

Now my opinion on practice leading up to the season is this: When you are preparing for a season in the spring/summer, it does the team, and specifically the quaterback, no justice to put a green jersey on the quarterback. When you have the green jersey, you have no pressure. If you go to practice knowing your going to get you face planted in the dirt, or EB is going to blind side you with a massive blow, that's going to more prepare you for game time. Crompton seems to perform well according to CPF in practice. Well, he doesn't have to worry about getting hit in practice. Might as well give him a pink jersey and tutu. He's proven he can't play this year. CPF....give someone else a chance.

I have an opinion on Foster that I have not heard anyone else mention. He's had fumblitis ever since he's been here. Listening to Gerald Riggs on Sport Talk in Chattanooga, he says it's been a problem all along because of the way he hold the ball. According to Gerald though, that's coachable and should have been corrected long ago. We all know Hardesty and Creer have proved they can produce and deserve the chance to get more carries. To me the situation with CPF playing Foster is that Foster came to CPF at the end of last year to get his opinion on going pro. CPF convinced him that it would be in his best interest to stay, who's best interest is debatable. My opinion is that CPF feels indebted to Foster, who is indeed a pretty good back and close to holding the all-time rushing record at UT. I believe that he knows the team would be much better of with Hardesty or Creer, but the fact that he helped convince Foster to stay, he feels obligated to keep him in the line-up again to the detriment of the team.

Sorry for the long post, but I am so frustrated with CPF's inability to turn this thing around. The game has indeed passed him by and his unwilligness to change is costing us all.

Why even hire someone with a "new" idea if you are not going to let them do their thing? I think Clawson could very well be what UT needs, but the powers that be won't let it happen, very frustrating

Word. The hallmark of a bad CEO. Classic Bob Nardelli type micromanagement.

I am now convinced we need a change at the top; just keep the coordinators!

Nice first post with some interesting points.

These are some very good points especially the CPF indebt to Foster and the green jerseys. The year we tried no green jerseys in the spring, we won the National Championship in the Fall.

There are too many hands in the offensive pot right now and i wouldn't be surprised if Clauson doesn't leave after this year. However, I would like to see Chavis stay if Fulmer goes and I just dont think he will. I guess we will see how much money matters.

I just have this to say to our Coach.
Coach Fulmer, there were some great years that we all will never forget. Exciting moments that have made us all lifelong, diehard fans, but sometimes you need to put the old bull out to pasture and bring in a young stud with some new tricks. I know that a lot of fans have really been riding you hard the last few years and asking for your removal and some of us have stayed loyal, but now it is time to go old bull. The stomping grounds that use to be yours are be taken over by new names and new offensive looks. Ask your old rival Spurrier, who we all love to hate, the SEC just ain't what it use to be. And that's part of the reason we love it so much and are proud to be a part of it because you never know what's going to happen. It's the SEC for godsakes, any team can give any team a loss unexpectedly. Look at Ole Miss, Two different teams from one week to the next. Back to my point though, times are changing, and Tennessee is stuck in the past. 11 Years is a long time, Shoot my son is in 3rd grade and we weren't even thinkin about kids when I was watchin Tennessee beat FSU. Coach you have done so much for this team and our community and have made a lot of money in the process. Do what you know is the right thing to do. Finish out this year strong will all of your heart in it like the old days and go out with a bang. I know for the ppl I can speak for that you would leave with more respect from us and pride for yourself than the what you are getting now. God bless you and your family and Thank you for all that you have done to raise the prestige of our team and at the same time raised our expectations. - Always proud and never booing, Mr. Tate ----GO VOLS!!!
