Breaking down the defense with Coach Banks

Really good news on E. Simmons. He's the type of 3 star recruit that can develop way above his pay grade and be dominate.

Yeah, I love reading that about Simmons.

I also thought his comment about not having CBs and Safeties, just DBs, was interesting. With today’s offenses, you almost need 4 or 5 guys out there with CB skills.

If we could get a decent defense we could roll next season with this high powered offense. I am cautiously hopeful, but not optimistic, we can get a defensive stud or 2 from the transfer portal and the current roster will improve in Bank's year 2.

I hope they go back to what they originally said. The job of the D is to get off the field. Be hyper aggressive even if you get burned. Just don't give the opponent 15 play drives. Get the stop. Get the turnover. Or give up the score. Just get off the field.

YES - the defense was on the field far, far too much last season. It really showed up in games we should have put away early and didn't...like Purdue, Ole Miss, and Pitt even.

Simply having an average defense would pay huge dividends for this and team.

If you look at the improvement the Ole Miss defense made from Year 1 to Year 2 under Kiffin, you’ll see evidence of how much that could help Tennessee’s record.

Thing is, I don’t know that Ole Miss really added much in the way of transfer personnel. I think their guys just got better and Year 2 in the system made a huge difference. I think those things will be huge factors for Tennessee’s defense.

Agree. With todays high powered offenses, if you give up a few first downs, the other team is in scoring position. The bend-but-dont-break philosophy too often becomes bend-and-then-break.

That is an excellent way to put it. Thanks.

Honestly, not many defenses are getting many three and outs in today's game. It is not only a UT problem, but it is still one for our coaches to solve, of course. Today's game belongs to the offense and the only REAL solution is to stack the defense with 5* talent, and only two teams have managed that magic formula in recent years. Even they can't do it every year.

They have among the best transfer class in the nation.

If we’re 25% better on 3rd and long we probably would have ended up 10-3.
That's really the only thing they need to truly improve on, and that goes for every position. Better coverage in the secondary, better pass rush and push from the line, and better contain from the linebackers. I don't have the actual stats, but our first and second down defense I thought were really good (as evidenced by the tackles for a loss we had). Just far too many back breakers on Third down for them to be truly effective.

That’s somewhat true on the DBs but he’s mostly only saying that because he was asked about dealing with all the injuries. Just coach speak. It’s a liability having these guys practice out of position

I don’t think it’s a liability to have Safeties learn to play CB and vice-versa. In fact, it’s a good thing. It is a liability to be missing so many guys.
