For the first time in a long time, we will score fast and often against weaker teams. We will not be reliant on those long nail biting drives to score. That in and of itself makes us more dangerous than we've been in recent years past. This year our passing game will get the job done enough to win half of our games. There aren't many secondaries that will be able to stop it.

So to me, how much success this team has this year is dependant on the running game. I'm not talking about 150-200 yards a game. No, what I'm referring to is this.

Consistently getting 2-3 yards everytime we touch the ball when opponents expect us to run. The last few years we have been terrible at moving the ball in crucial situations. Last years team didn't consistently get positive yardage running the ball, it came in spurts.

From the news so far the 0-line is much better physically and mentally, so this is adding to my excitement for a better year.

Defensively, we will bring more pressure, run more packages, rotate more players, and stop opponents more often.

This is a new team and a new year Vol fans, and I for one can't wait. I'm feeling good about our team and our chances.

It could get real entertaining. Looking forward to what we can do and the pieces we have on the field.

There's 6 wins right there, good points, and with some good d line play we can beat 2 of the harder teams like LSU.

Agreed....all that with a few less coaching errors at the end of the game and we might be in for a good year.

It's funny to me (and stands out) that the teams that you [presumably] think can stop our attack (by leaving them off your list) are the top 3 teams in the SEC East, and the top 3 in the SEC West, all of whom we play. :) LOL

But, I could be wrong in my assumption, so if I am, my bad.

I had a dream we beat Montana 103-13 so you could be right!

I agree and am hopeful - however beating that list of teams does not get me excited

i want to compete with and beat the big boys again

I like it. SHOCK THE WORLD.

Now how do we stop opposing teams from gaining 150+ on the ground and wearing out our D?

I can see this thread being true. Look at how many receiver at 4* or higher Dooley been able to bring in. Hunter, Rogers, Arnett etc. I think the coaches also may be using this to recruit because of the look we have got from some good Wide outs JMO. GO VOLS

D-line will probably be slightly better than last year. Young LBs just have to step up.

I think it will be more than slightly better. I think all positions on defense will be. If it weren't for depth at ALL positions on D, we might would make some real noise this year.

You are dead on. The teams I left off of the list are the teams it will take more than just a passing attack to beat IMO. Without a running game to slow them down, they will pin their ears back every play.
But if we can get our running game going in tough games we have a good shot at a good year (5 or 6+ running first downs a game).

8-9 wins plus a decent bowl game. In my opinion it will take a top tier coaching staff effort to accomplish this kind of season taking into account where we were this time last year.

I think they can do it.

Florida's secondary is a little vulnerable now that they've dismissed Jenkins at CB...
I'm not afraid of Arkansas' defense until they step it up and show this year that they've improved.

As for the rest, I don't think we'll have it too easy.

Just adding my $.02.

I would love a win against Florida and LSU. What's crazy is my roommate who is a UT hater last year said he may change his mind bc of Bray. While I admit he isn't a football afficianado. I'm glad he is getting some recognition

I think we'll be able to score fast on some teams but that won't be what CDD will want most of the time.

CDD will probably try to get a 2 TD lead as fast as we can and then he'll want more ball control and longer, consistent drives for more scores.

He'll want to keep our D off the field as much as he can so they don't get too tired since we still don't have the quality depth on our D just yet.

If we can score fast and force the other teams to play catch up and pass more then that's playing right into the hands of our DB's which is our best strength on D.

That will being more INTs and give us more scoring opportunities and the chance to control the clock more too.

I also think that Coach Wilcox will use more 5 and 6 DB sets to run more blitzes and to have more of our young, fast Safeties hitting up into the line more to confuse the QB's we face.

This should be a really interesting year and I can't wait.

VFL...GO BIG ORANGE!!!

So, your looking for Dooley to get an early lead and 'pound the rock'? Then Wilcox is going to bust out the old "Mustang" package?

CDD play FulmerBall? Playing not to lose? I don't think so. I think if we get up and pulling away, he will gradually insert subs to give them reps and evaluate them further in game situations. A frosh RB here, a frosh LB there, a little used upper classman everywhere.

Dooley is an evaluator, always looking for potential pieces to his chessboard and I dare say Wilcox is the same. These guys aren't going to play pattycake or Fulmerball by reining in the players. But they will send in subs with instructions to put a bleeding prey out of its misery. The Dool has a long frustrated and bloodthirsty fanbase to appease, you know. Not to mention a batch of youngsters eager for a chance to strut their stuff.

A great running game to me is 3-4 yard avg in obvious running situations and consistently 1-2 yard avg in 3rd and short. We haven't been reliable in 3rd and short in years.
