Bray named starter.

Why did it take 8 games to figure this out?

Exactly. Let Bray take a few lumps and learn (for instance, to watch the end dropping into coverage) and the LSU game and maybe the Georgia game (and possibly the SC game) would have looked quite a bit different.

Here's Simms in the Red Zone:
6 of 16, 38 yrds, 2 TDs, 2 int, 3 fds

Here's 3rd and 7 or more: 32 passes, 2 fds

and, according to the cfbstats.com site all 5 ints were on 3rd down.

(of course, 3rd down play calling has been questionable too...)

Well, I'll be the first to say that I wanted Coach Dooley to stick with Simms, because I didn't want a quarterback quagmire like the one we went through in 2005 and in 2008, with a different starter for each game. But because this is the hand that we were dealt, I guess we don't really have a choice but to accept the change, don't we? I hope Tyler does well and pushes all of the right buttons in Memphis this weekend. He does, in fact, have the biggest upside of all of the other quarterbacks. As for Simms, he proved that in certain situations, he made some good plays, but he also made some boneheaded decisions (forcing passes, taking a crap-ton of sacks, etc.). Those boneheaded decisions, unfortunately, outweigh the good things he has done this season. The biggest boneheaded decision, in my book, was the decision to trash his coach's decision to bench him. He needs to grow up and put his team first, and I must say that I am disappointed in Matt for displaying that kind of attitude. If you don't perform, you don't deserve the job, and by running his mouth the way he did, that just further proves that he belongs on the bench.

I think that may be why they are looking at this juco qb mettenberger. I think the staff showed who they think gives us the best chance of winning games by leaving Bray in for the rest of the south carolina game.

I agree with respect to the USC game, but respectfully disagree that the coaches position about who gives us the best chance to play could never change, regardless of what happens on the field. CDD has said that we will continue to operate the way we have, only with Bray as the starter instead.

He's also said many times that he's going to play the guy who he thinks gives us the best chance to win at that particular time. So, the coaches clearly recognize that what was right for the SC game may not be right in every situation in the future and they reserve the right to play either QB.

I wish it was a lock that Bray will be great from the first snap and that we never look back, but am just being realistic - Bray will have his ups and downs and Simms may still play.

I hadn't heard about the juco guy, but also had forgotten about Raulston. Don't know much about him, but imagine that he could be well ahead of Nance and might provide a possible option at backup is Simms packs it in...

Well, what can I say? I was wrong.

I said since the UAB game Bray would start against USClite. I was wrong. He is starting the following game.

Now Simms can do what he does best. Sit down and stare at all the green grass.

Go Bray!

As I said in a previous post, several months ago, Bray should have been our starter all along. Had it not been "Simms" the name, he probably would have. Just stands to reason if Simms was a big time qb he would have already been a starting qb in a major program prior to his coming to UT.

Haha. Simms name had zero to do with it. Bray being eased in and gaining the starting nod for the easiest part of our schedule was the plan all along no matter who the other QB was. And it was the right thing to do. Throwing him into the deep end full of sharks through the hardest part of our schedule would have been a horrible idea. It has worked out exactly like it needed to.

Yeah, same goes for Cam Newton....:)

Are you calling this to happen?

Do you want this to happen?

I don't really know what you're trying to do here, but you don't have one clue what Memphis brings to the table.

Well for one you didn't read what I posted cause I said ole miss not Memphis :p, (me or you could QB Ut to victory against Memphis). I don't want this to happen but I'm trying to make a point. If Bray starts absolutely sucking do you not think that some people are going to start calling for him to get benched?

Sweet! I agree with this. I cannot stand Simms' attitude

So many are so darn quick to put down players. Newsflash 1: There are no perfect people on Planet Gaia. Newsflash 2: Here's what Dooley has to say about HIS quarterback whose name happens to be Simms: “I had a real good conversation with Matt, and Matt is a team guy. He’s a high-character guy, Matt’s a competitor and Matt’s emotional. He was very apologetic for what happened after the game, and I really respect the fact that he came to me and said that."

QB Tyler Bray to start against Memphis GoVolsXtra

Way I see it, those who jump on our players at the slightest opportunity are the ones with an attitude problem.

Looks like Dooley has played this perfectly. Bray gets the start and an opportunity to build confidence against Memphis. Say what you will about the coaching staff, but you have to believe that as long as Bray was competing, this was likely the plan all along.

kind of a bummer from simms' perspective to think that you were there to take the hits during the toughest part of the schedule .. that may be the reality though ..

He had an ample opportunity to earn the job. Hard to feel bad about that.

Let's do this!!! This is the first game that i've been excited for since oregon!

Good call CDD...provides some good energy for the fan base, and even more importantly, the players. Gives everyone a fresh start mentality for Nov. Part of the master plan in my opinion. All Bray needed was gain enough “game management” skills to take over the reins. CDD's comments on same approach as always is vague for a reason...expect Bray to take the snaps till there is a good reason to switch back (injury/freshman panic). CDD's trying to keep Simms positive and ready in case he's needed. He'll make a solid back-up option.
On another matter, CDD can't and won’t make a decision to play someone to just keep a player happy and prevent a transfer...it's a business decision. Simms won't have many options. He's a Vol, so hope he makes the best of it with hard work and to remain ready…he may be needed at a key point in a game (this year).
