It's not like he's well known outside of Knoxville and maybe Al. He played very little his first 4 years. He's a big key for us to have a successful season. He's one of the best centers in the league, his experience vs the complicated defenses in the SEC is a valuable piece of the puzzle.

It’s a very good question. I would assume that the NCAA would permit with fall sports what they did with spring sports (grant an extra year of eligibility) and that Tennessee will follow suit, but I would imagine that other schools might not have the wherewithal to extend that offer when you consider just how many scholarships come into play for fall sports (football, obviously, being the biggest driver).

What prevents older people going back to school and becoming sports eligible? It seems like I’ve heard of 40-50 year olds being granted one year of eligibility for whatever reason. Is there an age limit to playing college sports? What (legally) prevents Lebron James from playing his 4 eligible college years on Rocky Top if he really wanted?

So here's the problem. If the NCAA grants another year to our current seniors and 5th year red shirt seniors and others like Kennedy what about the 85 man maximum roster size? If you have an incoming class of 2021 you're gonna have 25 new scholarship guys. That adds up to a 110 total scholarships. Are they gonna withdraw the scholarship offers from somebody? Also, extrapolate this to all sports, and there are budgetary and space issues.

This is a giant can of worms.

I read many years ago it was in the 27/28 range. Weinke was about that old when Florida State won the NC over VT.

You’re exactly right with your interpretation, which mirrors my concern. There’s no doubt in my mind that if there’s no 2020 football season (a possibility about which we differ in terms of perceived likelihood), the NCAA will permit an extra year of eligibility which would inherently affect the maximum roster size. That, to my knowledge, has already been covered for spring 2021 (if it happens; to your credit, no guarantee that it does) with the permitted extension of spring 2020 scholarships.

Your can of worms is valid and worrisome. To me, the concern subsides in one year at the latest so you’d only have a single class with which to reckon. I’m under the impression that the 85 player headcount cap would be waived with little fanfare, but that clearly presents an issue for a multitude of G5 programs that don’t have as firm a financial footing as UT.
