TheWolverine.com - Michigan turns attention to Hoke

The agent for San Diego State head football coach Brady Hoke has been in discussions for Hoke to possibly become the next head coach at the University of Michigan, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported today, confirming TheWolverine.com reports from earlier this afternoon. It's since been learned that Hoke will head back to Ann Arbor this evening.

The newspaper reported that Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon planned to fly to nearby Orange County for a meeting Tuesday, where Hoke had been recruiting. Flight trackers indicated the plane was in the air as of 1:55 p.m.

Parts of a news release from the University of Michigan this afternoon:

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon today hired Brady Hoke as the 19th coach in the 131-year history of Michigan football. Hoke arrives in Ann Arbor after spending the past eight seasons as a head coach at Ball State (2003-08) and San Diego State (2009-10).

“We are pleased to announce the hiring of Brady,” Brandon said in the release. “He is a terrific coach and will be a great ambassador and leader for our football program. We look forward to having him build a championship program on the field and in the classroom.”

Ball State...San Diego State...Michigan.

That seems like a pretty extreme progression to me. I'm not impressed with the hire. Of course, I hate Michigan, so I'm happy about it.

Would you consider that progression worse, better, or the same as this:

Bowling Green...Utah...Florida

He's had 3 winning seasons out of 8....Good luck Michigan...Should've kept Rich Rod

I don't know how Brady Hoke will fare at Michigan but you have to take into account the state of the programs he took over.

Ball State
1997 5–6
1998 1–10
1999 0–11
2000 5–6
2001 5–6
2002 6–6
2003 4–8
2004 2–9
2005 4–7
2006 5–7
2007 7–6
200812–1

San Diego State
2002: 4-9
2003: 6-6
2004: 4-7
2005: 5-7
2006: 3-9
2007: 4-8
2008: 2-10
2009: 4-8
2010: 9-4

The bold is when Brady Hoke took over. He left those programs better off than when he got there. They were awful.

I just listened to pat forde kiss michigan's ass for this great hire and about how you cant judge his ability to coach from his record....seems like I heard how bad dooley and his record was before being hired by tennessee by the same people...what a difference a year makes in what the makings of a good coach are.

Of course, Michigan is equally awful, is facing better competition and he would be fired by Michigan for the same records that he posted at Ball State.

So, Hoke may do just fine....but I find this interesting. I feel like they started out with two choices in mind. If they couldn't get the guy they really wanted, then they would just hire the guy that really wanted them.

I'm assuming that you mean three guys because their top 2 choices said thanks, but no thanks. Then they got stuck with Mr. Ball State/San Diego State.

Well, this is a good hire. I like Hoke. He's a steady hand and his team HAS ALWAYS improved consistently.

My problem is this: We all knew before Rich-Rod was fired Harbaugh was going to the NFL. Why not keep Rich-Rod next year? If history is right, he would have gone 9-3 next year. If he gets a good d-coordinator, a 10 win season would be possible. Hoke was going to stay at SDSU this year. Why not see what Rich-Rod had. Alas.

Let's see what he's got and hopefully returns Big Blue to prominence.

He took over a 2 win team and in two years won 9 games. Don't be silly.
