i bet its they dont want to pay for the bills to heat the schools, budget cuts

That isn't the concern I would say...a lot of kids simply don't have the coats/clothes needed to wait for their buses or walk home in those kinds of temperatures. There are a lot of classes canceled in Minnesota as well...but of course their temperature is a lot lower (-15 or so)...

yah, i see that as well. The reason i was saying budget is that a lot of schools in this area have idiots for school board members that dont know how to manage money, combine that with unfunded mandates and there is a predicament, so it wouldnt suprise me that they would shut down for a day to conserve on energy costs, plus TVA just went up on their rates.

I think they probably have several schools in the system that wouldn't be able to keep up with the heating demands. Especially if they have classes in the modular units.

its just a sad state of afairs when we cant even heat our schools because of the federal government and their wonderful unfunded mandates because of all of our best friend, NCLB

That could be an issue. I wonder how cold they would be even if they tried to keep them warm?

Personally, I wonder if they will even turn down their thermostats?

schools in upper east TN have closed down before simply for heating costs during extremely cold temperatures. Of course it can be 20 degrees colder in Shady Valley than Elizabethton and they are only about 30 minutes away from each other.

uphill both ways?

BTW, what's up with all of the coldness? Where is global warming at right now? It seems colder this winter than any I can remember the past 15 years.

Interesting...I wonder what Mr. Gore is up to these days?

Keeping warm by his natural gas furnace...gas for which he as purchased carbon credits to plant trees in Slovokia. Maybe he could go to Australia where they were having some record warmth or something....

...this is quite the Arctic blast, though...what surprises me is that weeks ago they said it would be coming, and were actually right.
