Braden Gall reports we have 12 out of 14 level of talent

I think this 12 out of 14 is being misinterpreted my most of us! Doesn't mean 14 is perfect and we are at 12! The 14 refers to all the member schools, and all except SC and Vandy have stronger rosters than the Vols!

And who in the hell could make such a prediction about rosters which have mostly not played a game yet!
A guy who knows he can easily trigger a dumbass fan base into a bunch of $clicks

I don't know what the heck he is looking at, but the cupboard isn't exactly bare here at Tennessee. We certainly aren't the most talented in the SEC, but Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Miss State aren't full of blue chippers by any stretch of the imagination.
Even with the portal transfers and portal additions...we have signed better recruiting classes top to bottom than all those schools. I think South Carolina might have been like 2-3 spots higher than us once in 2017. Other than that we have been getting way better athletes that have been getting really poor coaching. They have been put in an offensive system under Pruitt with no real identity/disturbing QB play and a defensive system that he didn't even understand himself.

Just like a job that you have fun at everyday you are excited to go to it and work hard. When you are burnt out in a cancerous job where people are miserable you don't even want to try. The athletes that stayed are now in a excited to go to work scenario. The mental side of the game is strong right now.

247 Sports does a composite team talent ranking. They haven’t updated it for the 2021 season yet probably because of the mass of roster changes brought on via the transfer portal. But if you look at the 2020 rankings, Tennessee was ranked 7th. Of course we were able to play below our talent level thanks to poor coaching and had a 4 star QB who in hindsight was at best a low 3 star.
We will be rated lower in 2021 because we lost some of our top rated players. But I doubt we’ll be as close to the bottom as he predicts. We have 3 five star players and 26 four star players for 2021 compared to 5 and 31 on the 2020 roster. So 29 4/5 stars vs 36 last year. Just based on last years numbers for all SEC teams at worst we will drop to 8th in the SEC in terms of raw roster talent. But as we are painfully aware, coaching will make or break a team and I’m hoping players on both sides of the ball get coached up.

Count the # of five stars on the UT roster. Then count the # of five stars starting on the UT roster. You may be in for a surprise.
4 total i believe.
2 starting
2 as backups

No we didn't hire a coach to implement an offense tailor made for 1 specific qb. You're right about that. We did bring in a qb to run Heupel's offense though. We'll see if it works I suppose.

You sort of left out the whole generational talent at QB that transferred there and was underutilized until the 2019 season, as being nothing like what we have on our roster either.

Yes, talent matters.. to a degree. But playing with fire, and heart can keep you in games you aren’t supposed to be in. (Also proper player development) This might be the wrong analogy, but do you think the continental army had any “talent” or any advantage at all compared to the British military? No, it was the heart and belief that we’d prevail that pushed us on along. Give the team a chance.

According to 247 Sports' Team Talent database, UT is 7th out of 14 (the link says 2020 season but the rosters have been updated for this year):

2020 College SEC Football Team Talent Composite

That took me 30 seconds to research. I guess a professional sports journalist like Braden Gall doesn't have 30 seconds
Thanks for that. I'm not a star gazer and do not believe that it is a perfect system particularly when applied to a single guy. But when taken as the measure of a whole roster it is more accurate.

That composite shows UT 3rd in the East and just behind Auburn overall. The margin over USCe and then back to UK is wider than the margin between UT and LSU who is 3rd in the SEC.

There is little experience and maybe this guy is trying to be "crafty" and incorporate that into "talent"... even so he misses the mark.

1st string talent? Yes. Depth? Closer to Vandy
That's not true either. You've for some reason gone hyper pessimistic to the point of not looking at things objectively. UT goes 3 deep with guys capable of playing DL in the SEC. In a 2 deep set, UT has sufficient ILB depth. UT has depth both at CB and S and N. UT has depth at WR and RB. Who outside UGA and Bama have as much depth of talent at QB? UT has quality and experience in their OL starters and the OL coach seems to think he's got guys behind them ready to play.

There are gaps in experience. But that describes every program in the SEC right now outside the top 2 or 3.

You need both and more to win. The missing component for the last two years at least has NOT been talent. Still isn't.

FWIW, the US lost the vast majority of battles in the Revolution.... sort of like Vietnam. Washington won essentially by being able to keep his army together, getting help from the French, and taking advantage of maneuver blunders by the British.

We won't truly know the answer until some point during the coming season, but it's not like this is a crazy take. Nearly every prognostication I've seen has us finishing either 5th or 6th in the East.

The transfer portal has been brutal. I think we probably have a little more top end talent than say Miss St or Arkansas, but I would also love to see a scholarship numbers comparison to get an idea of total depth. I have a feeling that's where we drop off.
