Brad Underwood (SFA) - Spread Offense vs Memphis - YouTube

Here is his offense if anyone is interested. It's not easy to defend. It's a fast pace motion with a lot of cutting, screening, and passing. It allows shooters to get open frequently. He would be the best offensive coach we have had in a long while. His team's rack up a ton of assist. They finished 1st this year in the NCAA (17 apg) and 8th last year (16 apg). This offense would be very appealing to guards with the amount of assist and open shots that this offense will create. I would love to see Hubbs in this sort of offense, along with Armani Moore.

I would love this hire but my only concern with him would be how well he can recruit?

This is the type of offense I have wanted from the start!! I like making the defense have to pay attention the whole time. If one man takes his eyes off his man or loses focus of his responsibility for even half a second, it is an open layup or open shot!! I do not know about his ability to recruit, but I want that type of offense for sure.
Hopefully if Tn does hire him, his time recruiting for South Carolina would help him here.

Orange jacket, yes--and bring back the Pat Summitt day-glo orange jumpsuit from the 70s for Warlick. I can dig it.

I often see people asking about if a particular coach can recruit. The honest answer is, with any mid major coach, we don't know if he can recruit consistently at this level or not. Marshall doesn't recruit particularly well, but he wins. In my opinion the top two best recruiting coaches at the mid major level at this point in time is Smart and Mack. Smart has seemed to really of hit his stride these past two years. As far as recruiting results goes, Mack's speaks for himself since he's been head coach at Xavier. I believe he's had 3 Top 25 classes since he became head coach in 09.

One thing that's for sure about Underwood is that he will run an exciting offense that fans will really like. Whether he can recruit at a high level is yet to be seen, but that holds true with just about every mid major coach. He's one of my top guys as far as realistic candidates goes.

Hey guys, stopping in from Nacogdoches (home to SFA).

I think it's imminent that we'll be losing Brad. Won't have the $ to keep him away from big schools like Tennessee. He turned down Marshall and Southern Miss after last year and has stated that he loves living in Texas and being at SFA. And, apparently his son is supposed to be walking on to the team next year, so that gives us a little hope that he'll return. But myself, I'm already planning on it that he's gone. He's getting a lot of pub other than just you guys, so it's only a matter of time. If that's how it goes down, you'll be getting a good one. Great coach and an even better guy and personality.

Recruiting wise, hard to fully tell yet like a few have said. But, he's gotten some really good kids to SFA. The Southland Conference is traditionally a pretty bad basketball conference, so the teams normally get the scraps and JUCO transfers. That said, he brought in a 3star kid last year and started most games and had 14 points in the Utah game. He also just signed 2 other 3* kids, one being Larry Johnsons son. So for our level, he's done an exceptional recruiting job. I'd assume he'd do just as good with a bigger program and better resources.

Thanks for your input. If you can think of anything else to add about Coach Underwood, please do.

Does he have any problems with the NCAA?

I wonder if Hart is worried about the fact that he worked under and was mentored by Frank Martin? Frank Martin isn't exactly squeaky clean. I'm sure Hart will fully look into things this time before hiring someone. Just something to think about why we may not be as interested in him as we hope we are.

Unfortunately I've never had the pleasure of meeting him face to face, but those that have said he's a great guy to talk randomly with. Seems like the type of guy that would love to grab a beer with you.

Earlier this season I sent out a tweet (@lumberjackfans if you want to follow for any info we hear) in regards to student support and suggested they get some free food. So Underwood goes and buys them a bunch of pizzas.

Coaching wise, it's been mentioned but he's a great Xs and Os coach. His motion offense is really tough to defend and I think it will be even better with some better athletes. The constant ball movement and screens really wears the opponent down. Don't remember if it was said previously, but we lead the nation in assists this season, and were one of the most efficient teams you'd see. Our success the past two years is nothing short of remarkable, but also somewhat of a curse I guess too because we'll probably never get to see a full team of his guys. Yeah he had some really good players when he got here, but what he turned them into was amazing. I may be a homer here, but I think were a Sweet 16 caliber team this season. And if it weren't for a terrible matchup with Utah (we had no size), I think we would have done just that.

I'll share any news that I/we hear. Feel free to stop by Lumberjackfans.com, that's my site and our forum. Although right now we're having some server issues.
