They're not going anywhere. ATL is the main hub and busiest airport in the world. The Delta campus is sprawling and all the simulators are there. A move like that would be catastrophic for the company and unbelievably costly.

Does it affect Delta or all airlines? I don't expect them to up and move but gradually move what they can. I'm sure another state will give them tax breaks that could offset this and maybe even make them money in the long run. The politics of getting them there was the incentive. Just by moving their HQ could reduce the Tax revenue for the state. The political grandstanding by the state could completely blow up in their face.

And the political grandstanding appears to be blowing up in Delta's faces.

It’s a discount on fuel. It has nothing to do with headquarters. They aren’t going to offset that loss of a tax break any time soon.

They aren't going to gradually move either. Just like a previous post. There are airlines that would love for them to open up the hub space.

They will end up with the fuel tax break when its all said and done.

I guess there's always that chance they could make a statement and move HQ. I just see it as so remote because "network" and presence is everything. You just can't give an inch in a place like ATL. They way they've built their network and hubs and how they connect passengers is everything. With ATL being the busiest airport in the world, just moving HQ would be detrimental to the operation. The offset any other city could offer with regard to the fuel tax wouldn't be near enough IMO.

Until Delta’s Saturday announcement, the bill seemed to have wide support, as advocates say it would attract flights to Atlanta as opposed to other major airports, where jet fuel taxes are not charged.

So it was moving along fine because congress saw a benefit by giving it to them but now its not. Don't think for a minute that other states and Delta are not doing a cost benefit analysis on a move.

Which moving is going to cost them a whole lot more than staying in place.

Does the proposed bill affect all airlines or just delta?

Do they rent the land or own? I really don't think you can make a determination without knowing a lot more than you or I do. A state with a lower state fuel tax could already be attractive and the state could make incentives.

I don't know for sure. I doubt that it applied to other airlines without a base of operations there. It is also now a SWA base, so it's possible that tax break could have been extended to them as well. And with an airline like SWA moving in on your turf, you're just not going to give any ground, including moving HQ. It would just cost Delta so much more than even the tax break on fuel.

You can't just pick up and move an operation of that size. Where would they move to? All the cities in the South are either hubs for other airlines or couldn't handle the additional traffic or both. Most airports don't have the Real estate around them to expand to what would be necessary to accommodate Delta. Delta ain't going anywhere.

You're also not looking at the massive infrastructure expansion needed to move large scale operations in a new city. I'd assume you have flown through Atlanta at some point and have seen the sprawl of Delta through that airport.

A whole lot more hidden costs than just a simple tax break. And what airport would they move to? You could be looking at a runway/taxiway upgrade (or putting in multiple runways and taxiways), new fuel barn, refueling systems, etc, etc, etc.

We're talking nine figures as a minimum. Maybe more.

It's an interesting situation. You know just a threat to move the largest private employer in the state could have negative backlash from the public as well. This debate is still in it infantile stage for both Delta and the state of GA.

Perhaps Delta Executives need to think twice about making policy on the grounds of a knee jerk emotional tantrum rather than waiting for the facts to come out next time. Because now, they are between a rock and a hard place.

They continue on this path and lose the tax incentives, they are partially screwed from a profit standpoint.

They renege and open the NRA incentives back up and they are seen as flip flopping for the almighty dollar. And they are screwed in public opinion.

Sometimes people should learn to STFU and stop making decisions before everything is known.

You only care about public backlash when it suits your views.

Are they going to force SWA to support the NRA? They seem like they are s**tting in their own bed.

Yea, they're in a no win situation now. They just hopped on the train with the social media mob. It's going to hurt them. Question is, how much?
