Is there a rule where lets say Tennessee goes 10-2. And for this discussion LSU goes 10-2. Neither played each other in the regular season. And New Years six bowl is available to both. Could they be matched in a bowl from the same conference other than a playoff type game?

I'll say no. The sec has relationships with the bowls and selects the teams for the bowls in a set order. Those same bowls have relations with other conferences. Even in the rare event the bowls other conference couldn't field a team due to not having enough wins the sec wouldn't slot a team since they already have a pecking order. You can find all the info at the sec home page

Kind of what i was thinking also. I just didnt know if there was some New Years Six type stipulations that came into play where the best matchups override the conference ties.

I don't think there's a rule, per se, but it probably wouldn't be great financially (compared to the other potential hypothetical matchups), and so that's why it probably wouldn't happen.

Not to say it couldn't happen. Afterall, we did in fact play LSU in the 1972 Bluebonnet Bowl, not long after we played Florida in the 1969 Gator Bowl.

No they would go down a list of tie breakers (commonly called indicators that would bring in the most money) to see which would go to that bowl.

The bowl selection process is flawed. Of course most of us agree there are way to many bowls. But i wish they would drop the bowl ties all together. You take the Sun Bowl. Its usually an ACC vs PAC 12. Ok i get ElPaso isnt a vacation destination. But for an SEC school that finds themselves playing in the Birmingham Bowl Or the Independence Bowl. ElPaso would be a change of scenery. Or the Holiday Bowl. They say that money is a key driver to picking bowl matchups. Yet most of the stadiums are pretty bare.

Aw, the '72 Bluebonnet Bowl, LSU vs UT- The day I got Married! What a memorable day. We won the game. Won't divulge anything else. I can say that Bert Jones, the LSU QB had a good 2nd half, but not good enough. I was drifting from the main subject of SEC playing each other in Bowl games- I wish we did. Although whipping the Big 10 is always good, no matter who does it!

I'll disagree with you. If we're not playing for a NC, I want to play others. We play every team in the sec on a rotation. It's fun to play those teams we may never play again. Big 10, Acc, etc... even the mid majors. We will see the lsu and fla in the next year

I dont really want to see a conference bowl matchup either. I was just curious would they match two highly rated teams to feel the NY6 bowls. I would love to see Tennessee play the Rose Bowl.
