It meant you didnt lose to Vanderbilt and South Carolina?

Lol

Exactly. Going to the Sugar bowl would've meant one thing and thing only....that we didn't lose to Vandy and finished the season off as well as we could have. Unfortunately neither happened.

They've always counted as far as the team win/loss record.
And for decades they've mattered in final rankings.
NFL preseason game ever matter for anything?
Wrong again sir

They haven't always counted.

If they did, then we wouldn't have been named National Champions in 1951, because we lost that bowl game.

Same for the 1940 and 1967 National Championships that we claim.

In hind sight - in my opinion the Vols in the MCB was actually a great choice. Yes I know it isn't New Orleans or one of the Florida bowls ... but it gave a chance for the seniors and those juniors who are leaving a chance to play their last game in front of a larger contingent of fans in Tennessee.

And those who say this game did not matter - were you at the game? It was obvious the team came to play, win and have fun one last time as team 120. The chance to play with the team for the fans one last time mattered to these players and that should be enough for any fan.

Bowl stats didn't count until the last few years. That's the entire reason Pumphrey set the rushing record. The decision to start counting those stats is one made by the NCAA, which obviously has a direct interest in fans thinking those games are important.

I know they started counting a few years ago. Right or wrong, the NCAA is the governing body and set the rule. Tell Barnett or Dobbs that they don't own records because some people don't like the rule then. I didn't know fans started thinking bowls were important after the rule went into effect. I thought most fans thought they were important and liked them since the start of bowl games.

The players (especially seniors and early draftees) will always remember this game.
I wil as well. It was the last time I saw some all time great Vols play for UT.

True. And alot of fans "remember what you do in november"

I would submit to you a coach at UT beating Florida and Georgia stays on the job a lot longer than a coach that loses to Vandy and SC the same years. You beat UF & UGA for ten years straight and go down to Vandy and USCjr those same ten years, I can live with it, dont like it, but i personally could live with it.

They still counted in the Win/loss column.
The national Champ was just named prior to the games. Check the records those years.

I couldn't. We should beat Vandy and South Carolina pretty much every year and Florida and Georgia pretty close to half the time, probably more if they suck like they do now.

We're on the same level as Florida and Georgia; beating them isn't supposed to be some miracle that makes it worth losing to Vandy for a decade straight.

Lol.

This bowl game mattered. To the players, coaches and a lot of fans. I'm sure Derek Barnett will never forget it. Go tell him it didn't matter.

It matters that we won so we can end the season ranked a little higher. Not a huge deal like a playoff bowl, but still, a higher ranking is always a good thing.

Other than that, it really didn't matter.

No one is saying no players care about them. Players' reactions don't make it any less of an exhibition game.

The bowl games are NOT exhibition games. College does not have exhibition games.

The bowl games, just like the losses and victories, that the teams in the playoffs will incur, count against the teams overall record. Stats from the games are included as well.
