I know it's cool for some to say that bowl games don't matter.
For those who say this I recommend that you watch the end of UT's bowl game and the players reaction.
Better yet just watch the end of any of the bowl games and the reaction of the players.

I was there and loved it as well as celebration for DB. Also is special to see them with band after game. Both Josh and DB were up there leading Rocky Top.

Yeah, you could tell the players hated Butch. Barnett showed no effort. No enthusiasm whatsoever. HA.

Bowl games do matter, however some matter much more than others. Unfortunately it has been a very long time we played in one of those that really matters.

They're exhibition games. In that sense, they literally don't matter. Turning that into "zero players care about bowl games" is a strawman argument used to prop them up.

Yes, they matter for several reasons. It sure mattered when we didn't go bowling and missed the extra practice time. It matters to the teams that miss out on a bowl too.

Then, on another level, if we had lost this game, it would have sure as heck mattered to a host of people ready for some negative raves in the postgame.

Only if we lose.

The problem is a lack of middle ground.

If we had lost, Butch sucks even more and we suck and all is lost.

We win and look out 2017 we're gonna win it all!

It was a great game to watch. I was on the very top row on the Nebraska side wearing my orange but the fans in red next to me were classy folks and very complimentary of Tennessee. Was a tad cold when the sun went down but I was prepared. Kudos to the team and Butch ... A good win!

I appreciate this post. Football is fun. Attending a game is fun - it's an activity. I want to win em all but in the end it's a game meant to enjoy and to have camaraderie with other fans (yours and them other ones).

:hi:

It was a good game and our boys played well. What more could we want?

It was mentioned later in this thread (maybe jokingly) but it all depends on what happens. Had Nebraska come back and won by a fg I'm sure you would see some different takes on the importance.

My take away from this game is simple. This team did show up for a game that doesn't really mean much and played like it did. That's a credit to the leadership on this team and Jones and his staff for getting them ready for it.

It doesnt change my opinion on Jones, I still don't think he is good enough to take this program to the next step.

I think bowl games matter to the players, coaches and school. The reaction of the players and coaches are proof of that.as for the school,it matter because of the money they get.
As for the fans, everyone has their own opinion right or wrong. The way I see it is if they don't matter then the stats and records set do not matter then. Just can't agree with that,it's unfair to players like Dobbs and Barnett.
Now some bowls mean more than others obviously but they all mean something.

Bowl stats didn't count until the last few years. That's the entire reason Pumphrey set the rushing record. The decision to start counting those stats is one made by the NCAA, which obviously has a direct interest in fans thinking those games are important.

It really comes down to what kind of program you want and type kids you want in your program. If you want to compete and recruit competitors, any time you take the field and score is being kept, you want to win. If you dont like to compete and want the sportsmanship trophy handed out to everybody, hell be Tulane or Brown.

They matter as much as NFL preseason games do, but the NCAA doesn't want people to realize that

Not even a close comparison. Bowl games count toward your season wins and losses. Player and team season stats also matter.

Bowl games, as exhibition games, literally DO matter.
I can think of several ways they matter.
1. More practice as a team.
2. Last game before signing day.
3. Size of distribution of $$$ among the SEC.

I sure others can add.
